Payne Co. OK had a "poor farm". However, the records were apparently disposed of when its doors were closed. I do not know if they exist for other counties. Another possibility, but one most would probably not want to consider: There is a Taft correctional center. If it is in Taft OK it is in Muskogee Co. I don;t know how long it has been in operation or even where it is, but the name sounds close enough to be a possibility. I checked my database of burials in Pawnee County. I have personally canvassed all cemeteries in Pawnee County (except three sections of Cleveland's cemetery) and gone through the sexton's records for Highland in Pawnee. I find no Hoss family members in the database. In the off chance they died and were buried at Yale or Glencoe in Payne County I checked my Payne Co. OK Cemetery Index. Again no Hosses buried there. Sorry for the negative reponse. Hi, I found a Taliaferro Mental Clinic in Altus, Jackson County. Talf could be an abbreviation. Not very close to Hughes County, but, could be a clue. We all love those clues! Jan
There is also a Taliaferro Mental Health Clinic in Lawton, Ok. That is in Comanche County.--Taliaferro was a politician some years ago from Oklahoma. State Hospitals is what they were officially called. They were mental hospitals ran by the state of Oklahoma. Since they were state hospitals they also took in charity patients. There is also a cemetery for the state hospital in Norman. It's now called Griffin Memorial Hospital, but was known in earlier times as Central State Hospital. The cemetery is unique in that the people are buried in chronological order. The oldest grave is in the southeast corner of the cemetery. The row runs north to the edge of the cemetery. Then they came back to the south end of the cemetery and started another row. Strangest thing I have seen in a cemetery. All the markers are identical in size also. The cemetery is known as Rock Creek Cemetery. It's on the corner of Rock Creek Rd and 12th Ave NE.

Oklahoma Cemetery folk: My husband's aunt Caroline Davidson and his uncle Walter Davidson and Walter's wife Georgia are missing. We believe Caroline was buried in Blaine County or an adjacent county, but we do not know where these people are. We want to be sure their graves are marked, but must find them first. Can anyone with a book do look ups for us? There are no death certificates. Any help will be sincerely appreciated. Carol, Have you tried http://www.oklahombres.org to find information? It is amazing at the reliable information they have amassed about outlaws and lawmen of Oklahoma. Jo ----- Original Message ----- From: "carol morse" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 10:14 AM Subject: Re: [OK-CEM] Placing Queries I know my gr-grandmother is buried in Oklahoma but I have not been able to locate a death certificate or place of burial. The story is a mystery and she may never be found. Here is what I know: Mary Elizabeth ELLIS, born 21 April 1867 in Tishomingo Co., Miss. Married John L. BYRNE1883, Grayson Co., TX; divorced Byrne and married George ISAACS, 1891 in El Reno, Canadian Co., OK. Isaacs was sentenced to life in prison at Huntsville for his involvement with the Doolin Gang in the murder of Hemphill Sheriff McGee in 1894 during a train robbery. Isaacs later escaped and no more information has been found on his whereabouts or date of death. Mary Elizabeth ISAACS, aka "Lizzie", was given a life sentence on February 11, 1898 as an accessory to the murder of a man named Elder in 1896 in Chickasha along with her brother, John Ellis. The sentence was later overturned due to public outcry and sympathy for Lizzie. Lizzie ISAACS, claiming widow status, with her 3 sons, Wiley BYRNE, Richard ISAACS, and Roy ISAACS, were in the Chickasha, Grady County 1900 census. Lizzie ISAACS, with her 2 sons, Richard and Roy, were found in the Clinton, Custer Co., 1910 census. Somewhere between 1912 and 1916, Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellis Byrne Isaacs was living with her sisters ex-husband, Tom N. SPARKS. No marriage certificate has been found. Lizzie caught Tom with another woman and burned his barn down. Tom shot and killed Lizzie the next day. Lizzie's 2 sons (by George Isaacs) then shot and killed Tom Sparks as he was being led up/down the courthouse steps to/from his arraignment for murder of Lizzie. The boys were never charged. The Ellis family Bible only has a short notation: Lizzie died January the 4 (and the year is illegible) but appears to be either 1914 or 1916. The family would never speak of her again until after the death of both her parents. I have exhausted the newspaper files that are available in Carter Co. and found no mention of the barn-burning or murders. I have never had an opportunity to explore larger newspapers so any help would be appreciated so much.
