    2. Penny Gardner
    3. Stephanie, I used the 1880 census as an example, and that would not be a good idea unless you are pretty sure that there are children under 10 in the household. For social security reasons, the soundex for that year only included the households that had children under 10. Of course, the regular 1880 census had everyone. Sorry I forgot to mention this yesterday. Penny

    1. [OK-CEM] hospitals/homes/residential facilites in state

    3. OK didn't really have county mental health centers until app. 1960s, when community-based treatment began. OK is now served by 5 (?) different private, non-profit corporations. There's been Eastern State Hospital--Vinita, Craig Co, Central State Griffin Memorial Hospital--Norman, Cleveland Co, and Western State Hospital--Ft. Supply, (Woodward Co?). The state was divided into roughly geographical 1/3s that determined where a person was sent. Others are right that Ft. Supply is now a correctional facility. I think Eastern State is pretty much now for violently mentally ill. Griffin also had a TB ward, as well as a veterans' home. Sulphur in Murray Co. also has a veterans' home. Checotah in McIntosh Co has or had an Oddfellows' home. I'm not sure about any other organization or religious homes in the state but they could be a possibility for someone. As mentioned, Taft in Muskogee Co was a juvenile home before becoming a correctional facility--same for Boley in Ofuskee Co. Whitaker in Pryor, Mayes Co, at Tecumpseh in Pottawatomie Co, and Helena in Alfalfa Co also had juvenile homes. Girls used to go to Tecumpseh/ boys to Helena. May have been other homes, too. For the mentally retarded, there's Northern OK Resource Center in Garfield Co (orig. Enid State School) and Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley, Garvin Co. Don't know NORC's history, but before SORC was Pauls Valley State School--it was Pauls Valley Training School for White Boys (the actual name!) Black guys went to either Taft or Boley--I forget now which. Before that, it housed TB patients. Those buried at the institutions were often indigent or no one claimed the body. Residents may have been taken to local or larger town hospitals and then buried in that town. Or their families took the body back home for burial. This is probably more than anyone wants to know! :-) But I live in Pauls Valley, so can ask to check their cemetery if anyone needs--and am 30 minutes from Norman. Lisa Stark

    3. In order to get any information from Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, you have to write to the Medical Records Dept. You have to give your relationship to the person you are seeking information on and do not ask for any medical information. A doctor would have to do that. ----- Original Message ----- From: twister <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 9:37 PM Subject: Re: [OK-CEM] mental hospitals of OK > The Hospital is still in vinita. Alice Mary BRIGANCE (1st Husband) or Alice Mary HEMPHILL(2nd Husband) Believe her to have been born abt July 1883 and died late 1930's - 40's in Oklahoma City. I believed she had worked for Wilson Packing Co. in OK City for a brief period of time. A family member believes that she was buried in a pauper's county or state grave site in a cemetery in the southern or southwest part of OK City. Any help that can be provided greatly appreciated. These grave markers were found in the 2,800 block of Southeast 12th. Nobody knows how they got there for from where they came. The first reads Eugene Conner, son of Jacob and Lyda Bruesch. The boy just lived a short time from January to February in 1916. The other reads Margaret Finch, born in June 1907 and died in July 1916.

I've been wondering how I can research my line from Missouri, and now I know how to begin. Thanks so much, Penny. Do the files come on a CD, and how long will it take for them to arrive? Are the files easy to read? Also, do you have any other tips on how I can locate info on my Missouri kin? Stephanie

    3. Thanks, Cheryl. The Davidsons came from Dyer, Ark and moved to Enid. James Franklin Davidson's wife died of breast cancer in Dyer, and so he went to Enid, taking his daughter Caroline, who suffered from Schizophrenia. Eventually he hospitalized her in Ft. Supply. We found his grave and placed a stone on it in Enid, but Caroline has remained lost to us. She has a ss# but no death cert. Her brother Walter is also lost to us, last seen in Houston, Tex. in about 1920. Wife Georgia might have been from Okla, and they may have returned there and may be buried there, but we do not know where. Walter had no ss#, and we know nothing more about him. 1. Re: [OK-CEM] Re:Soundex a must
    2. Penny Gardner
    3. Stephanie, the Soundex will be on a microfilm. Generally, it takes about 2-3 weeks to come from Salt Lake. The History center has microfilm readers and you can examine them for 3 weeks. I am not a Mormon, but I have found all the volunteers there so very helpful! Some of the files may be a little faded, but generally you can read them. If you know that your folks came from MO, pick a census that you are pretty sure they are in. I always start with the most recent that I know of. (1920 is the latest you can order) We knew ours were in MO in 1880, so I got the Soundex for that year. On that, we found they were in Vernon county. Next, I checked Vernon county 1860 and 1850, and found them on those. Knowing they were mostly around Vernon County, made it easier searching cemetery, and probate records. A lot of records in MO were destroyed during the War, but it's amazing how many survived. I live in CA, so I can't research in MO., but the History center also has a lot of probate records. I wish you luck. It's hard work, but so exciting when you find something! Penny

    3. Does anyone have a book of burials in Ft. Supply? Our Caroline Davidson was a patient in the mental hospital for years, and was sent to Okeene and died in Okeene. But it is possible she was returned to Ft. Supply for burial? Can sks check for me? 3. This is just a tip for people new to genealogy. If you can possibly get to a LDS history center, or a large public library, you will find you can locate your ancestors much faster if you order a Soundex for a certain date and state. The price is only about $4.00 and is well worth it. All residents of the state with a similar sounding name will be on the census if they lived there. This will tell you the county and the page of the regular census. This is just about a must if you don't know what state or even a county your folks came from. Try it, I'll bet you find someone! 3. Sometimes others have information to help us along. These "queeries" go to everyone. I know if I had information that might possibly help anyone, I certainly would. The ones I cannot help, which is probably 99% of the people who subscribe to this site, I simply do not write to, I'm sure they understand. I do not expect to hear back from those that can't help me. I understand how busy they are answering the people they have information for. Sorry. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mahlon Erickson Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 8:51 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OK-CEM] Queries I did not mean to cause any problems with my statement about giving a place and name and date with each query. I simply think it is inappropriate, when someone says they will do look ups for a specific county, to ask them to look up someone who is obviously not buried in that county. For example, the querist who has relatives buried in Muskogee County towns asking for a look up from the person who offered to look up Garfield County burials. If the querist had looked at a state map or Rand McNally atlas, he/she would have seen that Muskogee County was the area being researched.
