i do not know if this is still the way it is. in 1999 i went to oklahoma city to try to find a death certificate for my ggrandmother who died after 1924. i was told by an employee that she could only access what was on their computer, which at that time was from 1939 forward. other files were in the basement in boxes. ruth
Even though OK started collecting death certificates in 1917, there was no penalty for not filing one until 1935. That is why compliance was so sketchy until after 1935. Same thing with birth certificates. Gene At 09:08 PM 6/19/02 -0500, Evelynne Ritter wrote: >Thanks in advance Lois. Thanks in advance Lois. I have tried the state DV and was repeatedly told that of the 14 family members all buried within two rows of each other, none have Death Certificates. Allowing that 4 of them were infant children less than a year in age that still leaves 10 adults with no DC's. One uncle was a Judge for the Territory and later for the State of Oklahoma and his wife both died in the mid-1930's, neither of them have DC's which is way off line as far as I am concerned. We have several family members who are buried in the Main McClain County Cemetery. Does anyone have photos of that cemetery? We would appreciate anyone who would be able to photograph these plots. Also most of these family members do not have Death Certificates for most of the family members and the mortuaries in the area do not have any information on the deaths or burials. Evelynne Guthrie, OK
Evelyn... Not all funeral homes kept their records; they were destroyed after a certain amount of time, or when the business closed or was sold. That does not mean that death certificates are not available; it merely means that the funeral home does not have the info. If you have not tried for death certificates for those who died after 1908, you might want to try for them at the State of OK Vital Statistic Division. I'm not promising that they have them, but they just might. :-)) Lois in Auburn, CA
I think Oklahoma is particularly bad at this. I don't see how so many death certificates failed to be filed. I don't know how the state is getting by with telling people that they can't find a death certificate. I thought it was required by law to have one. According to the Handybook for Genealogists statewide registration began in 1908, with general compliance by 1930. I may be wrong but I'm wondering if the clerks are too lazy to look them up. A friend of mine went to Arkansas and they told her the same thing and she left her name and address for when they did find it and believe it or not they sent her one. This is about when you go to a courthouse and ask for certain records they say oh we don't have them as the courthouse burnt down. This has happened to me more than once and so I found someone that would help me. So find a way to get a death certificate. I too am unable to find death certificate for my grandfather David Francis "Frank" Smith, he died 2 May 1952 Anadarko Hospital, Caddo Co., OK and buried 5 May 1952 Memory Lane Cemetery, Anadarko. I have his obit and Funeral record from Smith Funeral Home, Anadarko, OK. Oklahoma Vital Records has no death record because their is no cause of death and signature of Dr. Conover who was his physician. Apparently medical records for death are not kept at Anadarko hospital more than five years, so I was informed after contacting the hospital. My grandfather is dead and he is buried with or without Dr's cause of death. Does not make sense to me. JL JL Smith....ttjims@aol.com My Family Tree needs ORNAMENTS

Dear List Members, I see my posting regarding the lost cemetery found near Wetumpka is causing some confusion. I took the information regarding the cemetery from The Oklahoman, date June 17th 2002 after this article was brought to my attention by a list member. http://www.newsok.com/cgi-bin/show_article?ID=875771&pic=none&TP=getarticle I also checked the Hughes County, OKGenWeb Project and saw that this cemetery is listed on it, but is not surveyed or are there photos of this Oklahoma treasure. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okhughes/hughcem.htm My call for help in surveying this cemetery and photographing its existence was and is because, I, as the many volunteers who desire to record and make available Oklahoma's history to our fellow researchers saw this need and asked for help. I have spoken with Linda Simpson the Oklahoma Coordinator of Saving Graves and she is also interested in the survey of this cemetery as well as Tammie and Bob Chada of the Oklahoma Survey and Virtual Cemetery website. I am sure the Hughes County Archivist would also like to obtain this data for the Hughes County Oklahoma USGenWeb Archives Project, as well as the Hughes County Oklahoma AHGP Project and the Hughes County OKGenWeb Project. I feel that each of the above sites have one goal in mind and that is to share the wealth of Oklahoma genealogical data with anyone who desires it. As far as I am concern, it does not matter if there is a duplication ... the sin would be if no one had the data. Take my name off your mailing list...I get too many as it is.
Hi Lois, Oklahoma state vital records should have the death certificate. They will search for the death record in one county only. Did the funeral home records verify Woodward County as the place of death? Fort Supply is very close to two other county lines. I would suggest looking for the obit to help verify where he died before you spend any more money. If you will give me a day or two, I will try to find an obit for you. You mail e-mail me privately if you like. Hi Glenda... I do have the obit already. It does not state where he died, but the funeral home records from Thomas, Custer Co, state Supply (I am concluding they meant Fort Supply). Also on the funeral records it states "Removal Permit 86. Dist 71-152." There are many mysteries about this man who was my grandfather and I am hoping that the actual death cert may contain something to help clear some of them. He died a few months before my birth and I never met him. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks...Lois in Auburn, CA

It apparently is not lost as it is named on the Hughes county website. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okhughes/hughcem.htm What's the deal here? Is it that it has never been canvassed or what? Hi listers... I am looking to find my grandfather's death cert. James Erwin Jones died on 8/2/1940 in Fort Supply, Woodward Co, OK. I sent for his death certificate and the state of OK tells me they have none. I do have the funeral records from the funeral home in Thomas, Custer Co. They state that the embalming was performed by the Charles Chenworth (or something close to that name) Company at Woodward, Woodward Co, OK. James E. Jones was buried in the Mound Hill Cemetery in Thomas, Custer Co, next to his parents, Mary Belle and William Franklin Jones. I've been to this cemetery. My question is this: If a person died at the base of Fort Supply, would there be a death certificate on file with the state of OK? Or would those records be in Woodward, Woodward Co, OK? I'm very confused over this one. Lois in Auburn, CA
