    3. Dear List Members, If you have not had a chance, you might want to visit the Oklahoma Family Group Sheet web site and submit your FGS. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okfamgrp/fgs.htm We, Tammie and Bob Chada, Donna Dreyer, Linda Simpson and myself wish for this site to become another valuable tool for those looking for their Oklahoma Ancestors. We the researchers of Oklahoma history are fortunate to have so many resources to fall back on, The Oklahoma Survey and Virtual Cemetery website and the Saving Graves project, the Oklahoma USGenWeb Archives Project, (this includes the Indian Nation archives) as well as the Oklahoma AHGP Project, the OKGenWeb project and and now the Oklahoma Family Group Sheet website. Check the Love County Archives at http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/ok/love/lovecem.htm and scroll to Love County Cemeteries, there you will find the descriptions, there are two listed at Ennville, neither on an island on the lake, though. Would anyone have information on Graveyard Bluff Cemetery also known an Chickasaw Bluff Cemetery located on an island in Lake Texhoma south on Enville Ok??????????? ggggrandfather Edmund Pickens and two sons, Thomson and David are buried there. I have heard it is in bad shape. I would like to find out if there are any stone markers left. Or if anyone has been out there to know where on the island they would be. Any info would be helpful. 3. I live in Guthrie, and our State Senator Davis has assisted us in the past with a local problem. I'll call him first thing Monday and see if he can help out with the problem. It is frustrating enough when a resident cannot find any documents, but worse for those who live outside Oklahoma. It only gives our state a bad name. Evelynne Guthrie

Same thing with birth certificates. > > Gene Also, At least during the 1st decades of the 20th century, not everyone in OK had funeral home funerals, died in a hospital or even had a Dr. in attendance at death, or notified the authorities of the death--esp. in rural areas. A personal example: my maternal GGF died at home in rural Choctaw Co. in 1911. They were too poor to call a Dr. and his son made small head and footstones of concrete. He was buried in a nearby Indian cemetery down in the woods that's now in someone's pasture. His wife, too, died at home in 1917, during very bad weather. Again, no money for a Dr., not even for a marker this time, and weather was too bad for much of a service--certainly no obituaries for either of them. 3. Some suggestions to try: obituary (one to three weeks after death) resolution of condolence (1 to 2 months after death- from organizations he/she belonged to) probate record (estate or probate) land transfer (due to death) last appearance on voter registration rolls (may state dued and give date) last payment of taxes (if quarterly narrows to three month period) pension record (if veteran) Just a few ideas if those fine money takers at the State Dept. of Health don't find the death certificate for you and if the Funeral Home no longer exists. 3. Jay, my experience with Okla. was this:I was looking for death certificate for my husband's gdmother. We had date of death and picture of her headstone which read ,Lizzie Parsons. I sent for Lizzie or Elizabeth Parsons, nothing. Then I sent all the pertinent info that I had,on her death, burial place name of husband, survivors,Etc. I got back her death certificate which read, American Elizabeth Parsons! So, send everything you can because sometimes one of the survivors is who signed the death certificates' info.We didn't know that her name was American. Many of the older people went by nick-names and were buried under their rightful names or vice versa.Last year I spoke to the daughter of my gt-uncle.Told her I had a copy of their marriage license and who signed for them to get married. The gt-aunts' name was Sarah Elizabeth. She told me that wasn't so that her mother was Bettie and that's how she was buried. My gt-gdmother and Sarah Elizabeths' (Bettie)mother had signed for them to marry but she was very hard to convince.I have been known as Sue all my life but my given name is Beverly Juanita so ask around and see if anyone remembers a nick-name.Hope this will help someone. It's very frustrating. I sent for my uncles birth certicate three times with no results. His name according to my gdmother, his mother, was Paul Leon. Finally I sent for his death certificate which gave his name birth and death date.On his birth and death certificate he was Paul,no middle name.I sent for an aunt'r death certificate in Okla .I know for a fact that her name was Amanda H.(hester) I finally found her in the social security index as Manda L.(Louise. She was named after two aunts, Amanda and Hester Louise. As Hester got older she started using Louise and was known as aunt Lou. So I guess somewhere along the way Amanda's name got changed from Hester to Louise. Maybe she never knew for sure. Just that she was named for this aunt.Anyway in each case it was the correct person because all the family info, parents spouses, etc was included.BJM(Sue) Sincerely, An iPhone User

    1. [OK-CEM] Okla Death Certificates
    2. I was at the Oklahoma Health Department, Oklahoma City requesting 4 death certificates, one 1909, 1917, 1919 and 1926. $10.00 each. (I do not live in Oklahoma) I have pictures of these 4 people's grave stones with birth and death dates on them and all 4 obituaries. I have been there many times, I am beginning to believe I just-- -- by now-- -- may own it as I have spent enough money over the years :>) Ha! I none of the 4 death certificates were found, but when they do not find a death certificate for that person, they do give you a letter that is good for 6 months for another search, no charge, if you can find any new information that will help find that death certificate. I do not know if they do this when a request for a death certificate is mailed in. I was there in person. I have never mailed one in to them. This last time, in March, the gentleman that helped me (take my money and applications) told me they were setting up a new way for them to search their death records. He said by this summer (that would be about now) they were hoping to have the new system up and running. The new search method will be the same system as we all use when searching the census SOUNDEX. He went to explaining how a SOUNDEX was used--------but I told him, wow, I use the census SOUNDEX AND UNDERSTOOD HOW IT WORKS. In fact, he sent my 4 back through as part of the new SOUNDEX system was being use, it does take longer, but I was really satisfied this time that a good search was done. He came up with one death certificate for the same exact name, different county, but, CRUD, IT WAS NOT MINE as the age was 40 years off, born in a different state, died in a different Oklahoma County and different wife. Each time I have been there I see people go to a certain window with documents and they are from Funeral homes that are filing death notices with the state. But that is now----not back when I want a death certificate. I have been so disappointed many times and very happy when a death certificate has been found. So it has been up and down. I am hoping their new SOUNDEX SYSTEM is completed, this will be a great new change for searching for death certificates at the Oklahoma Health Department. Jay yaerohs@aol.com

    3. One look at our State Health Department that controls the vital records should explain everything. Our Health Dept. has been involved in a scandal for the last several years involving "ghost" employees and some have even served jail time for it. This is all such a shame as it is so unnecessary. It places a really bad appearance on those of us in Oklahoma who are honest and hard-working. Unfortunately, this is just another example of politics and those of us who do genealogical research as a hobby (and those of us who do it for a living, like me) are going to suffer for it. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SMM1033@aol.com> To: <OK-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2002 1:47 PM Subject: Re: [OK-CEM] Death Certificates > I, along with others, have the experience that often times they dont look. 2. My grandfather who died in 1952 has funeral records but when Oklahoma Vital Records had no death cert. for him but did have d/c for his wife my grandmother who died in 1951 the Funeral Home contacted OK Vital Records for me and was told they do not have his d/c because no cause of death or Dr's signature. My question is how could someone have Death Funeral Record, obituary and burial if there is no cause of death or Dr's signature. So far his death has cost dummy me $20 for requesting his d/c twice. Does anyone think contacting OK State Senator or Congress person would help? JL

    2. How can we find an exact date of death death if we don't know it. I have had the same trouble with OK. All I know is that my ggrandfather died in 1911 in Tillman county. I got ahold of the cemetary where he was buried and they have no records of that time. My ggrandmother was also buried there and no record of her either but I know that she was buried there because I have an obit of her. I have talk to family and they all say that they were buried in Davidson Cemetary but they have no record or headstone. I also tried to get an obit from the newspaper and I did get my ggrandmothers but she died in 1941. I also got some land records of my ggrandmothers and it said nothing about my ggrandfather because he has already died (She purchased land in 1920). So I know that he died between 1910 and 1920 because he was found in the census with the family in 1910. I am stuck and I don't know what to do! Can anyone give me suggestions? Thanks! 3. Have you tried Wills and Estates. If your grandmother bought the land in 1920, where did they live before that? Have you tried a Genealogy Society? Some of them can be very helpful. On the cemetery records I had an experience in Kansas with my g grandparents. In their obit it said where they were buried but when we contacted the sexton it was not on the record. She was upset and said what if we bury some one in the same place. She in turn started looking and found an old plot record and they were on it. Don't give up just keep trying. 3. My grandfather recently passed away. I learned that the information I gave at the funeral home is what will used on the death certificate. When I got a copy of the death certificate, this was correct. Of course the information is only as good as what the informant fills out. So if you know the funeral home that handled the body and they kept records you might try them first, before Vital Records. When my grandfather died we requested a copy of the death certificate for every child and grandchild. The cost was $3 a copy in Arkansas. So maybe down the line somewhere, someone will not have to request a lookup from Vital Records. Remember also that sharing copies of your important family documents with others, may help you someday if you should ever loose the originals.
