John Elder is mentioned in BEERS Commemorative History of Wood Co., as assessor in Wood County from 1847-60. His entire family is found in the 1850 census for Liberty Township. In the 1860 census, John is found next door to MERCER family, with several children, but his wife Mary is no longer listed. I have their son JOSIAH's death certificate from Monroe Co., Michigan, with his mother's name:" Mary MOREHOUSE, b. Portage, OH." Family letters of George Elder from Columbus, OH, say that John & Mary had died by the time all 3 boys enlisted in the Civil War (abt 1861-64).
