What follows is an abstract for the purpose of researching the family of John W. Van Valkenburg, b. 1801, and Melinda Mc Auley, b. 1806. Chapter XL, page 356, Perrysburg Township starts by saying the township was established May 8, 1823, on the south bank of the Maumee River. There are many names in the work, the following apply to our concerns. CHAPTER XL Perrysburg Township. The Perrysburg township assessor was Fred MILLER, 1876, and 1881-82; p. 357. >From documents in the auditor's office, it is learned that trustees were Eber WILSON, 1831; Josiah MILLER, 1840; and Hiram DAVIS, 1840, 1845, and 1847; p.358. The clerk's records from 1848 to 1896 name the following trustees: Eber WILSON 1855, 1856, 1858 - 59; and Frederick MILLER 1883, 1884, 1885, 1891 - 1893; p. 358. The Old and New Hamlets. - Lime City had L. S. WARNER appointed postmaster July 1885, The Methodist Episcopal Church, of Lime City, had members Mary and Emma CREPS from 1885 to 1890. Linson Was surveyed for Elliott WARNER in July 1875; p. 365. Old Reminders. - On the Eber WILSON fram, two miles from Perrysburg, are the remains of a fortification, of which nothing is known. In 1823, when the WILSONS settled there, the lines of the works were distinct, and, in plowing, blacksmith's cinders were found withing the inclosure. The fortification can have no connection with the building of Fort Meigs, for it is a work which Harrison's men did not dream of constructing; p. 365. Perrysburg Village. Men of 1839. - In 1839, an enumeration of all male citizens over twenty-one years of age, in the township was made by County Assessor Samuel Matthews. Among the list is found Joseph CREPS, Joseph A. CREPS, George CREPS, David CREPS, Eber WILSON, Charles WILSON, Samuel WILSON, Josiah MILLER, Hiram DAVIS; p. 363. Joseph CREPS arrived at Perrysburg in 1833, of the twenty-three houses and cabins, the CREPS converted the third, which stood on the flat north of Fort Meigs, it had been used for washing fish; p. 367. The first post office in the village of Perrysburg was establised January 28, 1823; W. H. HOLLENBECK, Postmaster in 1889; p. 368. Miscellaneous. Traders of 1840. - The business houses of Perrysburg in 1840, among them the "Eagle Hotel" run by Joseph CREPS, p. 370. Traders of 1840. - The business houses of Perrysburg in 1840, as early as 1844, F. HOLLENBECK carried on a forwarding and commission house; p. 370. Banks. - The Perrysburg Savings & Loan Association was incoporated April 3, 1869, with F. R. MILLER, D. Kidder HOLLENBECK, as corporators. It was organized May 1, that year, with F. R. MILLER, treasurer; D. K. HOLLENBECK, committee on loans. The Exchange Bank was organized in October, 1871, with F. R. MILLER, Cashier. The Citizens' Banking Company, incorporated in 1892, had D. K. HOLLENBECK and Jacob DAVIS as two of it's directors; p. 370. Modern Houses. - After the destruction by fire of the old court house, the citiens of Perrysburg, on April 15, 1872, resolved to rebuild; among the signers of the resolutions were John EBERLY, G. B. KREPS, F. R. MILLER, D. K. HOLLENBECK, George HOFFMAN, et al; p. 371. In May, 1882, a Board of Health was established, with F. HOLLENBECK as a member. The Perrysburg Gas & Pipe Line Co., has as one of it's gas trustees, in July of 1888, John G. HOFFMAN; in 1890 the plant in Perrysburg was purchased by Northwestern Ohio Nauural Gas Co. The journal of the council gives the personnel of local government from 1853 to 1896 the first name being that of the mayor, the following names in each line, being those of councilmen: 1865-67, 1873-74-Frederick R. MILLER, as mayor; Councilmen were: 1859, 1860, 1862-1865-George B. KREPS; 1872-George HOFFMAN; 1872, 1873-74- John EBERLY; 1873-75, 1881, 1884-85, 1887,1896-John G. HOFFMAN; 1883-74-C.A. KREPS; 1889-90, 1894-George W. HOFFMAN; 1893-D.K. HOLLENBECK. The clerks of the town, are named as follows: 1845-Hiram DAVIS; 1856, 1860-61-F.R. MILLER; 1870, 1873-D.K. HOLLENBECK. The treasurers for the same time were: 1861-George B. KEEPS [KREPS]; 188_-Fred EBERLY. The Fire Department, formed in 1838, had listed in ! 1872, J. G. HOFFMAN. pgs. 373 & 374. The cemetery board, in April, 1895, liste as superintendent, W. H. HOLLENBECK. Throughout City cemetery, with the first interment in 1849, are many fine mounuments, such as the HOLLENBECK and EBERLY mounments, among others, many of which died from cholera in 1854; p. 375. Cholera Victims.-The following are on a list of the victims of the pestilence, who died in this locality, in 1854. The list is taken from the records of Fort Meigs cemetery, and is given order of date of death. Margaret HOFFFMANN, John HOFFMAN, Peter MCCOLLY, George HOFFMAN, Frederick HOFFMAN and Elizabeth HOFFMAN. The first death was recorded on July 3, and the last, on August 19, 1854, the numbers swelled to above 200; pgs. 375-6. Common Schools.-The first Union or graded school in the Valley was instituted at Maumee by Francis HOLLENBECK, and the second at Perrysburg; listed as students in 1851 were Henry and Edward HOLLENBECK; with F. C. EBERLY and Jacob DAVIS, on the school board of 1895; p. 376. The Way Library had Francis HOLLENBECK serving on the board of manages in 1881, and executor in 1890; p. 377. Churches.-The Catholic Church, cornerstone laid 1889, had a window donated by John G. HOFFMAN. The Methodist Episcopal Church has George CREPS, local preacher, 1856, he was also a class leader for many years. The Presbyterian Church elected in 1840, George W. CREPS, an elder. The Walnut Street Presbyterian Church had as a trustee in 1895 D. K. HOLLENBECK. pgs. 378-80. Secret and Benevolent Societies.- Masonic Societies - Phoenix Lodge, No. 123, F. & A. M. had as a secretary F. E. HOLLENBECK, 1874, 1890 p. 380; Wolford Post, No. 51, G.A.R., chartered March 31, 1881, with Jacob DAVIS the first adjutant, W. H. HOLLENBECK, 1883, 1885, 1887-1890; p. 381. Perrysburg Lodge, No. 524, K. of P. orgainzed in 1891, had listed as members G. W. HOFFMAN, and a chancellor D. K. HOLLENBECK & C. A. HOFFMAN; keepers of records and seals had D. K. HOLLENBECK. Perry Lodge, Knights of the Golden Rule, No. 159, chartered 1885, among the 29 members were W. H. HOLLENBECK, F. E. HOLLENBECK and D. K.
