What follows is an abstract for the purpose of researching the family of John W. Van Valkenburg, b. 1801, and Melinda Mc Auley, b. 1806, who removed from COLUMBIA CO., NY to WOOD CO., OH about 1850. Chapter XLV. WASHINGTON TOWNHSIP. page 406. The establishment of Washington, was on June 5, 1837, Township Officals Trustees-John CROM 1837. The Trustees, elected annually since that time, are named as follows[for our purposes]: Trustee-1843,48, 57-59; Assessor 1856, 64; Clerk, Board of Education 1853 - Joseph A CREPS; 1843-46, 49-51, 55-56 - Martin WARNER, Jr.; 1845-46, 51-52 - Jacob CROM; 1859-61 - G. L. WARNER; 1870 - J. L. MC COLLEY; 1871, 73 - J. L. DAVIS; 1882-83 - Jacob HUFFMAN; 1886, 89, 96 - Daniel W. HUFFMAN. Dr. B. F. DAVIS health officer in Dec. 1803; P. H. VAN VALKENBURG Assessor 1880. Pages 407,8. Pioneers, page 408, Adult males withing the township in 1839 were Jonathan CROM, Abraham CROM, Josiah CROM, Elliott WARNER, Martin WARNER, Martin WARNER, Jr.,. John CROM settled in 1831; Jacob CROM signed a petition in 1833 for roads to be built; Elliott WARNER, Sr. appears to be a resident in 1834; when these pioneers went into the forest from the river, that part of! the Fort Meigs and Wappakoneta road, from the Mission station into the prairie, on the east bank of the Tontogany, was not cut out or bridged. There was a false alarm in the Huckleberry war of 1837 and a party was garrisoned at John CROM's log house, north of Tontogany. Early Schools - it states the "Washington" school house, near John MC COLLY's, completed in 1842, was the first frame school house in the township, it goes on to say that the cemetery has spread over the school site, page 409. J. A. CREPS was a director on the Board of Education in 1853 as was John CROM in 1854; p. 410. Joseph A CREPS had been a postmaster during the "forties"; p. 411. Tontogany Village was surveyed May 5, 1855 and incorporated Sept. 9, 1874. The first election, held April 11, 1875, elected were: Wm. CROM, marshal; Dr. B. F. DAVIS, councilman for two years; and Peter VAN VALKENBURG, councilman for one year; p. 411. Elected since have been: J. A. CREPS, 1884 councilman; W. CROM, 1888; C. W. MC COLLEY in 1894; P. H. VAN VALKENBURG, Repbulican, treasurer, 1895; William Van Valkenburg, marshal, 1889; C. R. CROM, marshal, 189-, William CROM, marshal, 1896. William CROM was postmaster in 1885. Traders were DAVIS & COLLONS' drugstores, and VAN VALKENBURG's general store. Churches in Tontogany Village - page 413, gives a C. W. Mc Colley as served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Tontogany, incorporated in 1867, organized September 4, 1861. Tontogany Lodge, No. 755, I. O. O. F., given on page 414, was chartered May 20, 1887, and instituted August 4, 1887, with the following charter members: J. W. VAN VALKENBURG, C. W. MC COLLEY, amon! g others. The roll of past grands lists C. W. MC COLLEY, 1889; and as secretary in 1890 for it's sixty-six members. Continuing on page 414 under Walter Wood Post, No. 48, G. A. R., being formerly organized March 23, 1881, lists William CROM, I. B. VAN VALKENBURG, J. L. MC COLLEY, B. F. DAVIS, as members; with I. B. VAN VALKENBURG as past adjutant in 1892; it had sixteen members in good standing of the forty-four ex-soldiers residing in the township. The Women's Relief Corps, No. 87, was chartered June 10, 1885, with the following members listed on p. 414: Sarah VAN VALKENBURG, Katie CREPS. Th John B. KREPS Camp, No. 61, S. of V., was chartered March 9, 1884, C. R. CROM member and J. W. Van VALKENBURG as second captain of the seventeen members with the quarters in the Grand Army hall; p. 414.
