The indexes are surprisingly affordable: 1830 & 1840 Census, 1989 3.50 1850 & 1860, Index to U.S. Census', 2001 3.50 1870, Index to Heads of Households & Other Last Names, 1985 5.00 1880, Index to Heads of Households & Other Last Names 5.00 1900, Index to Heads of Households & Other Last Names with supplement 8.00 1910, Index to Heads of Houeholds & Other Last Names 8.00 As are other publications on their web site: http://home.att.net/~ohiobuckeye/wdogs/booklist.htm And, of course then you can help do lookups for others, too.
