Hi folks, I did a Net search for "Jennie Eberly Estate" and found this in Bowling Green CAC webpages: "14.Correspondence to Charles Gorrill from sister, Jennie and brother-in-law Benjamin Eberly, 1870-1872,.." **** Center for Archival Collections William H. Gorrill Papers MS 446 Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Series Description Inventory Introduction The William Henry Gorrill Papers were donated to the Center for Archival Collections in November 1985, with the cooperation of R. Bruce Way, Tiffin, Ohio. Additions to the collection have been made periodically since 1985, with the continued assistance of Mr. Way, as well as that of Marion Gorrill and William Gorrill Swigert of California. The collection, which dates predominately from 1857 to 1923, consists largely of correspondence, diaries, and photographs documenting Gorrill's activities as a lawyer in Wood County; his trip West and settlement in Oakland, California; his marriage to Addie Walker; and his death from tuberculosis in 1874. -- Nancy Elder Petersen, Library Internet volunteer Vancouver, Washington, USA http://www.teleport.com/~nancyp/elder.htm
Benjamin C Eberly (1843-1934) was a Real Estate dealer in BG. His wife was Sarah J "Jennie" Gorrell Eberly, (1850-1939). That is one possibility. Thanks for sharing that, Jacque. I will pass that along to his ggranddaughter. William S Eberly was my ggrandpa John Cox's cousin. John was a farmer in Wood Co and John's wife Naomi's diaries from May 14, 1918 "Wm Eberly & wife took us for a nice ride. he & Pa got out to look round in a woods for muskrooms & a man ordered them out." William was 81 then. John was 65. There were other mentions of their visits for quite a few more years, so William enjoyed quite good health. Hi Eberly searchers, I am not related to the Eberly family, but I live on Eberly Avenue in Bowling Green. This area was originally called the Jennie Eberly Estate and I have often wondered who she could have been, but have not taken the time to research her. Can anyone enlighten me on Jennie Eberly? A fact that may or may not interest some one, is that the University of Toledo has an Eberly Hall located on campus. The first name of the woman for whom it was named, escapes me at present, but if someone is interested, I could locate more information. I know there are several Eberly families presently located Lucas County (Toledo). Hello Barb, In June, 1876, I have a copy of Probate records appointing W.S. Eberly as guardian to My Grandfather, Warren G. Martindale & His siblings (Carrie Mae: Curtis W.; George W. MARTINDALE}. Hi Sue, Thanks for sharing your findings. I recognize from "The Farm Journal Rural Directory of Wood Co., OH 1916" Published by Wilmer Atkinson Co., Philadelpia MILLER John (Carolyn) 1ch laborer O5a H E Boundary St. Perrysburg Pgb B tel. I believe Carolyn is my Caroline LUSHER whose marriage to John MILLER on 2 July 1876 is recorded in Wood County, OH. Do you know who John MILLER's parents and siblings were? The child may have been their daughter Mary Ann. Their oldest child, William H. MILLER, would have already been in a home of his own by 1916. Any idea who he married, any children, etc., etc., etc? According to the 1900 Census for Wood County, Carolyn had had four other children who had all died. Would love information on those four. I am wondering if my Sarah Moury LUSHER b circa 1816 and her daughter Elizabeth b circa Mar 1850 (wife and child of Jacob LUSHER) and Mary LUSHER b circa 1842 may have been victims of the cholera epidemic and if there is a mention of them in the records? A Genealogists Christmas Eve by Sandra Devlin 'Twas the night before Christmas and inside my house Little was stirring, except my computer mouse. Our descendants were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of ancestors danced in their heads. So I at my laptop, near trusty old printer Put the finishing touches to the project of winter, The gift I had promised for under the tree A product of love, the family genealogy. My table with clutter galore was aspread with pedigree charts of the living and dead; old yellowed photos, letters of yore, wills and diaries chronicling days from before. While others bought gifts at Wall-Mart or Sears, Id spent my time searching birth dates and years. No need for ribbons or fancy gift wrappings, This gift had a way of transcending the trappings. While surveying the charts with one final proof, I must have missed the sound on the roof. For what to my wondering eyes did appear, But the jolly old elf, replete in his gear. Searching my face, old Santa could sense My Christmas spirit was extremely intense. He spied my research on the table spread out, "A genealogist!" he exclaimed, that removes any doubt. As I climbed up the stairs feeling quite in the pink, I looked back at Santa and shared a sly wink. For he and I know that the gift of oneself, Beats anything bought from a department store shelf. ~ Forwarded with permission from ~ Sandra Devlin <devlin7@attglobal.net> Moncton, New Brunswick http://sites.netscape.net/devlinsandra/missinglinks

I recognize that Eberly surname. There was Joseph Fredrick Eberly(1872-1944). He was sometimes called Fred, at least he was in an early census as a boy with his family, but was "Joe" in his obituary. Oops, I should have said: Mary Ada ELDER ROE is Josiah ELDER's daughter. She was born in 1869 in Petersburg, Monroe Co MI. Buried in Weston, Wood Co OH. She married Robert Anthony ROE. Josiah had a sister Mary Ann ELDER, b. 1841 in Portage, Wood Co. She married Julius ROE in Wood County in 1854. She is buried in Ogemaw County, MI. Happy Holidays! -- Nancy Elder Petersen, Library Internet volunteer Vancouver, Washington, USA http://www.teleport.com/~nancyp/elder.htm
Hi folks, Thanks for posting the references to the Wood County OH Directory. I think all my ELDER surnames were gone from Wood County by 1916, but maybe they are mentioned somehow in the Directory, anyway. Mary Ada ELDER ROE, Josiah Elder's sister, may have returned by then to Weston, Wood Co. She died in Weston in 1946. She married Robert Anthony ROE. I recognize the name EBERLY as one that testified in Joseph ELDER's Civil War pension papers. I'm still looking for John ELDER's parents in Pennsylvania. Melinda and John W. went west to Wood Co., OH about 1850. There is a Peter MCCOLLY buried 1854, who died of Cholera, in Perrysburg Township, Wood Co., OH. "Commemorative Historical and Biographical Record or Wood County, Ohio; its past and present, illustrated.", J. H. Beers & Co., Chicago, 1897. Pages 356 - 414. Has a person by the name of J. L. Mc Colley listed as a Washington Twp. Trustee for 1870, p 407. Early Schools - it states the "Washington" school house, near John McColly's, completed in 1842, was the first frame school house in the township, it goes on to say that the cemetery has spread over the school site, page 409. On page 412 under Municipal Elections, there is a C. W. Mc Colley elected in 1894, as councilman for the long term. Churches, page 413, gives a C. W. Mc Colley as served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Tontogany, incorporated in 1867, organized September 4, 1861. Tontogany Lodge, No. 755, I. O. O. F., given on page 414, was chartered May 20, 1887, and instituted August 4,1887, with the following charter members: J. W. Van Valkenburg, C. W. Mc Colley, among others. The roll of past grands lists C. W. Mc Colley, 1889; and as secretary in 1890 for it's sixty-six members. Continuing on page 414 under Walter Wood Post, No. 48, G. A. R., being formerly organized March 23, 1881, lists I. B. Van Valkenburg, J. L. Mc Colley, B. F. Davis, as members; with I. B. Van Valkenburg as past adjutant in 1892; it had sixteen members in good standing of the forty-four ex-soldiers residing in the township. The citation above is given to support a theory that Melinda Mc Auley's name could have been spelled Mc Colley or Mc Colly and that perhaps this is a brother or father listed as J. L. Mc Colley, John Mc Colly, C. W. Mc Colley, as of Dec. 2000, no birth of Melinda Mc Auley has been found. She is found in Baptism records of the Kinderhook DRC for the baptism of her children as Melinda Mc Auley and Mc Cauley. DRC, Kinderhook, Columbia Co., NY, Baptism records for sons John Mc Auley Van Valkenburg #6355 and William Schyler Van Valkenburg #6430 have Melinda's maiden name spelled two different ways: Mc Auley and Mc Cauley. Born two years apart, 1829 & 1831, respectively. Thanks, Sue Downhill, sudown@cwnet.com

Hi Jim Taylor - I have checked our index to Burials in Wood County, Census in Wood County from 1820-1910, Probate Deaths Index from 1867 - 1908, Our obituary Index at the University, Probate Births from 1867-1880. and our index to the Historical and Biographical Record of Wood County. I see no DOEL or BATTRICK whatsoever. I also do not see any Charles HOLT. Sorry we could not be of more help. Jim, I am sorry, but I am not clear what you want to accomplish. Do you want to research the DOEL family in England or the PIERCE and HOLT families in Wood and Lucas Counties or both? Do you know if the Bere Regis is the one in Dorsetshire, England? If so, perhaps I could give you some ideas as I have done quite a bit of research on my ancestors who were from Dorset and neighboring Wiltshire. Hi Phyllis, I am trying to research the Doel family from England. I was having no success trying to identify the Doel family line through my gggrandmother Charlotte Doel Battrick. So I thought that it might be worth a try to identify the Doel family line through my gggrandmother's sister's family. The only information that I have on the sister's family is that Eliza Pierce married Charles Holt and moved to Toledo. I know that I am assuming quite a bit, but nothing ventured--nothing gained. Yes, Bere Regis is in Dorset. I know my ggggrandparents death dates and that they are buried in Bere Regis, Dorset, England. I believe that the Doel family is from Wiltshire. I have information that perhaps the siblings of Charlotte and Eliza were born in Wiltshire. I am on the Dorset Rootsweb list. But nothing really informative yet. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Sorry to be so confusing. Jim Taylor of Warren, Ohio
