    3. Hi folks, Donna Wolf sent me a package of ELDER research this week. I've been transcribing some of the microfilm copies and posting to the web. Here's one with lots of names! NancyP **** OWEN MERCER married Rena Sloan, 21 Sept 1887. 50th Anniversary 1937. son of JOHN MERCER and AMANDA CREPS (John Mercer's 1st wife was Elizabeth Elder, b abt 1834 (died before 1860) Elizabeth was a sister of Josiah Elder, b. 1848 Portage Twp, Wood Co OH --his daughter Mary Ada Roe attends this celebration) Also see the surname ROACH which has been mentioned with the Mercer family here. Weston, Sept. 30--1937? Recollections of a happy event of 50 years ago were vividly recalled Sunday when Mr. and Mrs. Owen Mercer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The door of their spacious home on West Main Street was wide ajar to receive the 54 guests who came to congratulate them. The home was beautifully decorated with tall baskets of marigolds and other flowers of golden hue. Mr. and Mrs. Mercer received their many friends graciously and the hum of voices throughout the day had the flavor of reminiscence. The color note of gold was further carried out in the dining room with gold colored favors, gold tinted china and table linens, together with two large bride's cakes decorated with "Fiftieth Wedding Anniverary" in large letters of golden hue. Covers were laid for 54 guests. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon Ramon Borough, little granddaughter, bearing a bouquet of yellow roses and another granddaughter, Mrs. Modesta Clapp and husband, preceded the bride and bridegroom of 50 years, as they slowly decended the open stairway thru the hall into the parlor to the beautiful strains of the wedding march. Miss Harriet Dewitt was at the piano. Rev. W.A. Wolfe officiated as Mr. and Mrs. Mercer renewed their vows. While all stood, Mrs. W. A. Wolfe sang softly "I Love you Truly." Mr. and Mrs. Mercer received many lovely gifts expressive of affection and friendship. Those present were: Rev. and Mrs. W.A. Wolfe, Mr. and Mrs. James F. Lance, Mr. and Mrs. S. L. McCrory, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Rigg, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bannister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hurst, Mrs. Ida Hemminger, Mrs. Ada Roe, Mrs. Kittie Brown, Mrs. Anna Herringshaw. 3. Hi Vicki Ashton - We have a small history of many of the churches in Wood County. I looked at the folder on Plain Township churches today. I see only a short paragraph from Beers regarding the United Brethern Church at the Union Hill Cemetery. It listed a half dozen early members, etc, but no Grover was listed. We also have an index of ministers that were recorded in the Probate Office in Wood COunty. I do not see any Grover in there either. Gene WCOGS Member #503 ...----- Original Message ----- From: Vicki Ashton <heypa@cros.net> To: <OHWOOD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2001 4:41 PM Subject: United Brethran Church > Hello everyone! I am fairly new to the list so I hope I am not repeating an already-discussed question! My ggggrandfather was Aaron Grover (I have posted about him in the past), born in New York in 1801, married Mary Ann Davis in New York, moved to Delaware County, Ohio for many years then to Wood County, Ohio. He is buried in the Union Hill Cemetery near Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio. He was a minister and we have found several references to marriages that he had performed but never a reference to the church name. In the Union Hill Cemetery tombstone transcriptions book published by the Wood County Gen Society that I have, it shows on old United Brethren Church location on the cemetery grounds. Also on Aaron's tombstone it says Elder Aaron Grover. How can I find out if he was a member of the church there or possibly even involved with the ministry? Are there records from that church available? Any help is greatly appreciated! 3. Hi Amy - I live a mile from Moline, and am acquainted with many KELLER's. Which specific family are you researching. I am familiar with about four I think of the current generation and the past. Alvin KELLER, Carl KELLER, Chet KELLER near Stony Ridge. Ed Keller in Moline. The old homestead used to be in Moline. I am sure there is a KELLER family history book out. I saw it once and read part of it. We have quite good coverage of the KELLER family in our Lake Township History Book published last year. Which most family are you a descendant of? If you want, I could put you in touch with some of them. I don't know of any of them that are current members of our genealogical chapter. 1. Elizabeth Elder married George W. Clark
    2. Nancy Petersen
    3. Hi folks, Does anyone have information on George W. Clark who married Elizabeth Elder, 28 Jan 1849 in Wood Co.? (In LDS database: IGI source #0409699 v. 144B) There is an Elizabeth ELDER in my ggreat-grandfather John ELDER's family, but she married John MERCER in 1855, and then died in a "washday fire" before 1860. John MERCER married again. Where did the second Elizabeth Elder come from? There is an Elizabeth ELDER in the School section of Beers History of Wood Co, p. 394, in a list of teachers from 1853 to April 1857, at the 2nd school house built in the village of Portage and Liberty townships. Joseph Clark taught the winter school of 1849-50 for $45." There was a record of a sale of property that belonged to Alexander Elder in 1849 by his heirs Samuel Elder and Elizabeth Clark, wife of George Clark to Josiah Miller. Does anyone recognize those names? NancyP -- Nancy Elder Petersen, Library Internet volunteer Vancouver, Washington, USA http://www.teleport.com/~nancyp/elder.htm

    3. Church records (if you are fortunate enough to find them) are a wonderful source of information. I have found not only the expected baptism, marriage, and burial records, but other items which really help personalize my ancestors. For example, I learned the amount that one of my great-great-grandfathers gave to his church for the year 1889. I mention this because I was very late in using this resource and wish that I had earlier included church records on the research list with census, vital records, etc. Phyllis ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
