    1. WOOD & Hammansburg ME Church
    2. Jeff Leydorf
    3. Looking for 2 children of Edwin (or Edward) & Martha Jane (Dutton) WOOD who may have died near Hammansburg between 1910 & 1917. They are Kenneth WOOD (age 23 in 1910) and Isadell WOOD (twin to Belle). In 1916 Martha & Ed lived at Rt 1 North Baltimore, Henry twp, Wood Co. Martha's obituary (see below) states family may have lived in this area from abt 1906 to 1917. It also states Martha was a former member of M.E. Church at "Hamsburg" which I assume should have been listed as "Hammansburg". Does this Church still exist, are marriage/death records available, and who could I contact? Kenneth may have died in war?? Isadell may have married and died young?? Martha J Wood (d.3 July 1917 Marion Co, OH): "... Mrs. Wood was the daughter of Mr and Mrs B.P.Dutton and was born in this county, Oct 25, 1857. She married in January 1880, and was the mother of eight children, five of whom survive with her husband. They are B.W. Wood of McComb; Mrs. Bert Sprague, of Perrysburg; Mrs. May Morgan and Orville Wood, at home and Mrs. Belle HILL of Deshler... Mrs. Wood was a member of the M.E. Church at Hamsburg, Wood County, where she resided for eleven years, moving back to Marion County last March." Jeff Leydorf Michigan leydorfj@edzone.net 1197 Wood Co OGS

    3. Hi Anne Rupert - There is no Stella Township in Wood County, Ohio. The Ohio Towns and Townships to 1900, a Location Guide published in 2000 by the Ohio Genealogical Society shows a village did exist at one time along the border of Vinton and Jackson Countys in Ohio and a post office was established in 1880 at Locust Grove Church. That is he only information that we could locate about STELLA in Ohio. I see you did get a number of replies concerning the J. C. Johnson. I hope that you were at least able to establish some informatin of benefit to you. 3. Dorris, Most of what I have learned on John JOHNSON/ JOHNSTON (besides censuses and some burial records) is this little paragraph from 1875 Hardesty history "JOHN JOHNSON was the fourth son of John and Elizabeth Johnson; was born in Richland County, Ohio, in 1824, and removed with his parents into Wood County in 1837. His father's family consisted of nine children- Thomas, Jane, Fanny, Cynthia, James, William, John, Robert and Cyrus. John was married to Matilda, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Eberly, February 21, 1855. Mrs. Johnson was born in Portage township in 1835. Mr Johnson has threee children- Jessie L., Albert G. and Claud L.- living, and two Delias and Bell- deceased. Mr. Johnson has held the offices of township trustee and clerk." Barb

    2. I was very interested to hear more concerning the family of John Johnston. I am a descendant of the John Johnston that married Elizabeth Humphrey through their son, Cyrus. Are there any other descendants out there, and which son or daughter is their line through? By the way, one descendant of Cyrus, who went to Wayne Co., IL, is now teaching art in Wood Co. 1. Matilda Eberly Johnson Wright??
    2. Barbara Cox
    3. Matilda Eberly b in Portage 2 Apr 1835. She married John Johnson in 1855. This John Johnson is the son of John and Elizabeth Johnston. John and Matilda can be found in the 1880 wood co Liberty twp census as a couple with several children. What happened to this John Johnson Is this the Matilda who was married to Theodore G (TG) Wright?? they lived in BG in the 1920 census? TG died in Toledo Hospital ca Mar 19 1920/ Tillie died 23 Feb 1922 about noon after a short illness. Am having trouble reconciling these diary notes: 24 June 1917 "got dinner & then up to Tillie Wrights" Sept 28, 1917 "Mr & Mrs Will Eberly & Tillie Wright came this p.m." Mar 14, 1918 "went over to see Tillie Wright tonight." Apr 6, 1919 "Called on Tillie Wright." Feb 25, 1922 "Tillie Wrights funeral this PM; Pa pallbearer" (note Pa and Tillie were cousins. Both of their grandpa's was Benj. Cox) I am confused about what and when became of this John Johnson after 1880. wonder if that is this John Johnson from diary: Jan 3 1911 Jason has been down to John Johnson part of the time. Jan 10 1911 Jason helped John Johnson butcher, this PM they husked corn. Fri Feb 8 1919 "Mr John Johnson died tonight." Thanks, for any help. Barb Cox

(unknown) Patrick's Irish origins and ancestry remains unknown. Oral tradition records Patrick's arrival in America with a brother (name unknown) who settled in the Baltimore, MD area. Patrick first appears in America in 1759 in Frederick Co., MD court records as a debtor and last appears in 1793 as a witness to a deed by his son James in 1793 in Washington Co., PA. Patrick was a staunch Irish Catholic, and his children married German or Irish Catholics. This makes this family unique in being the only pre-Revolutionary Archer family that was Catholic thereby making it easier to identify them and to differentiate them from the two other Archer lines who were "Scotch-Irish" Protestants living in the same area of Greene/Washington Cos., PA. Patrick's children began marrying Protestants fairly early in the Second Generation the earliest being about 1806. The Catholic Archers today are concentrated mostly in Noble Co., OH being descendants of James (of Patrick) whereas the other descendant lines of Patrick are mostly Protestant. Children of Patrick: 1. James b. c. 1747; d. c. 1830. James and his father and siblings moved from Frederick Co., MD. to Washington (now Greene) Co., PA about 1772. James became the Captain of the local militia fighting Indians during the French-Indian War and remained in Greene Co., moving out to Ohio Co. (now Marshall Co., WV) VA by 1800. He and his family moved to Monroe (now Noble) Co., OH around 1815 and died there about 1830. Most of his descendants stayed in Noble Co., until the 1870's. James married twice: 1. Sophia (McClelland?) 2. (Mrs.?) Jane Lincicome. 2. Joseph b. c. 1755; d. 1822. He was a landowner in Washington Co., PA as early as 1774, after the family moved from Frederick Co., MD. He had considerable land and wealth accumulated by the time he sold out and moved to Guernsey Co., OH about 1802-1803. Two of his children married in Guernsey Co. in 1811 and 1812. After the Indians had been pacified, he and the family moved on to Richland Co., OH by 1820 where Joseph died in 1822. He md. Margaret Church, daughter of George Church (Kirche/Kirk), probably in Maryland before moving to Pennsylvania. About the time of his death, his descendants began to move Hancock and Wood counties, OH and Marion Co., IN by 1830. 3. Michael b. c. 1760; d. 1786. Little is known of him, as he was killed by Indians before 9 Sep 1786. After his death, his widow Elizabeth Wells, daughter of John Duckett Wells, moved with her brothers and two children, Mary and Joseph, to Tyler Co., (W) VA. where his descendants live to the present time. 4. Simon b. c. 1760; d. 1808. Simon moved out of Washington (Greene) Co., as soon as the Northwest Territory had been opened. He moved to Washington Co., PA between 1787 and 1790, appearing in the 1790 Census of Morgan Twp, Wasington Co, OH and died in Newport Twp, Washington Co., OH in 1808. He md. Nancy Church, daughter of George Church (Kirche/Kirk), and had two (Simon and Patrick) and possibly three (Jacob) sons. The sons remained until 1823 when they moved to Clay Co., IN. Simon md. Nancy Church. 5. Jacob b. c. 1765; d. c. 1825. Jacob's moved from Washington (Greene) Co., PA to Spencer Twp, Guernsey Co, OH about 1810 and died there about 1825. His wife is unknown. His descendants lived in Guernsey but some moved to Muskingum Co., in the 1820's and then moved eastward to Morgan Co., OH. They remained in the Morgan Co., area until Noble Co., was formed in 1851 when some remained within Morgan and others found themselves in Brookfield Twp, Noble Co., OH. By the 1900's descendants were in Noble Twp, Noble Co. Migrations of this line include Nemaha Co., KS (1878) 6. Elizabeth md. William Wells, son of John Duckett Wells. William died Jan-Jun 1835 in Tyler Co., WV. An Elizabeth Wells (wife of William?) in her will proven 22 Dec 1823, Greene Co., PA, mentioned one, unnamed, child. Elizabeth and John Wells granted letters of administration but their relationship to Elizabeth is not known. Other direct descendants are not known, as William's will does not list any children. 7. Mary or Polly 8. Nancy One of the two girls married George Fee who lived in Washington Co., PA until after 1790 when he moved to Mason Co. KY. No further information. Oddly enough throughout the 200 year period of migrations and intermarriages, none of the male descendants of Patrick married descedants of the other male descendants of Patrick. Intermarriages did occur in the 20th century through extended in-law connections between two of Patrick's descendant lines of Jacob and James. Migrations of James (of Patrick)'s descendants before the Civil War were limited to Iowa and Nebraska by 1836 and Franklin Co., Kansas (1859). After the Civil War migrations of James (of Patrick)'s line were extensive: Wood and Jackson, and Wirt Cos., WV (1870's); Swift Co., Minnesota (1878) and South Dakota 1880's); Seward Co., NE (1878); and many counties in Kansas: Anderson (1870); Cloud (1872); Harvey (1872), Sheridan (1879); Norton Co., (1879); Marion (1880); Mitchel (1886); Franklin (1890); Washington (1891); Cowley (1900). 1. Grovers
    2. Vicki Ashton
    3. Hi everyone! My line of Grovers are from Wood County, for sure; I have documentation on them. They are (starting with my great-grandfather) John Grover (1865-1948), son of George M. Grover (1837-1891), son of Aaron Grover (1801-1873). Aaron was born in New York somewhere, then came to Delaware County, Ohio, then to Wood County. We can't seem to find his parents. However, my bigger mystery is his "other" relatives. There are a couple of lines of Grovers in Wood County (and even some in Sandusky and Ottawa Counties) and we can't seem to get them tied together although there are many teasing clues that there is a relationship. The other two main lines I am refering to are Hezekiah Grover (1810-1868) and Cyrus Grover (1818-1863). Some of the main clues that there is a relationship are: George, Cyrus, and Hezekiah all three owned adjoining farms on Hilt Road in Center Township. I don't have those land records yet. Could they have information that may help link these families? Most all of these three families of Grovers are buried in Union Hill Cemetery. I've been there and seen where they are in relation to each other. Aaron is directly next to a baby grandson of Cyrus's, then a stranger, then Cyrus (alone). Most all of their descendents (at least the sons) are buried there also. Hezekiah's grandson, Irwin K. (1860-1935) and Aaron's grandson, John S. (1865-1948) both married McIntosh sisters who were living in Kansas and brought them back to Wood County. There are other, smaller clues also. I really don't want to try to fit the facts to "my theory" so I am trying really hard to prove otherwise but I feel that at least Aaron, Cyrus, and Hezekiah are brothers or first cousins. Their sons and grandsons are intertwined so much. Like I said, there are other families that touch on these three but these are the ones that seem most closely connected. If anyone has any information or clues as to where I can go from here to prove or disprove relationships, please let me know. I think if we could find all three of their parents, we would have our answers! Thank you ever so much! Vicki Ashton
