    1. [OHWAYNE] Lecture Opportunities
    2. MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2001, 7:30 p.m. JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY at the Jewish Community Center, 5738 Darlington Road, Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA. Free and open to the public. "Walking Aroung the Neighborhood with the Census Taker: Why did he always miss my ancestor?" will be presented by Elissa Scalise Powell, CGRS. The Federal Census is a wonderful and basic tool for genealogists, after vital records, but finding the ancestor can be a challenge. This lecture shows what type of information is on each census and gives the tools for gaining access to the information. Techniques, aside from indices, will also be shown to help the researcher through some of the pitfalls of the records. Internet sources and resources will be discussed. The 1930 census (due for public release on 1 April 2002) will also be discussed. _________________________________ TUESDAY, APRIL 17, 2001, 7 p.m. NORTH HILLS GENEALOGISTS will hold its regular third-Tuesday meeting at the Northland Public Library, 300 Cumberland Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237 (McCandless Township) The meeting is free and open to the public. We regret that we have no way to distribute information from this meeting if you are unable to attend. “Finding The Place of Origin of Your Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestor” will be presented by Dr. James H. Sterrett The chance of success in tracing one’s Scotch-Irish ancestor in Ireland is in direct relationship to how specifically one can identify where he or she originated there. Because research in Irish records will probably be of little success otherwise, this place of origin is something “you must know before you go.” This talk presents several ways to find where that immigrant ancestor called home. While the talk will focus on a specific group, the sources and techniques explained here will be useful for family research of many ethnic immigrant groups. Dr. Sterrett, retired Professor of History at Geneva College, is also a former editor and continuing contributor to the WPGS Quarterly, now operating from his home in Brockway. Jim’s special interest is Irish and Scotch-Irish research, about which he has spoken at local genealogical and historical societies as well as the 1995 FGS Conference. __________________________________ APRIL 26 to 29, 2001 OHIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY will have its annual conference at the Hilton Hotel Akron / Fairlawn, OH on April 26 through 29 with Friday and Saturday each having as many as 5 lectures per hour to choose from.
