    1. [OHWAYNE] John Winkler & Family
    2. Are there any Wayne Co books that you may have that list births before 1867? Isaac Lehr married Mary Jane Winkler 14 Nov 1850 in Wayne Co., OH. Marvin Allen Lehr was born to them 22 Nov 1855 in Wayne, Co., OH Adda M. Lehr was born to them in Oct 1856 in Wayne, Co, OH. Is there any way to trace the birth of Mary Jane Winkler? The 1850 census said she was 18 and lived with Fanny Winkler. I don't know what religion they may have been or what church records it could be in. I know that Wayne County Probate Court doesn't have records that far back. Is there any other place I can look? How can I find out who Mary Jane Winkler's parents are? I don't know if Fanny and Lawrence Winkler were her parents or grand parents. If they were her grandparents, then I believe Enoch Winkler may be her father. Is there any way to find this out? I'm not familiar with researching in OHio back at this early dates when the state or county didn't keep records. I understand that John Winkler, the oldest living pioneer in Greene township, and first son of Lawrende Winkler, was born April 22, 1799 in Burke County, NC and came with his father to Greene township, Wayne Co, Oh in the spring of 1814 to prepare the way for the rest of the family who came in the fall. 3. Hmm, I'm from between Burbank and West Salem and there is an Overton Rd that runs through the Killbuck Creek bottom area. If I'm not mistaken, it runs clear to Wooster, so I'd first check the Canaan Twp records... Hope that helps! 1. [OHWAYNE] Heckathorn Family
    2. Carole J. Schetter
    3. Does anyone have any information on the Heckathorn Family? Jacob Heckathorn purchased 80 acres in 1825/26 in Milton Township, section 23. We think his wife, Sarah Dage/Dague whom he married in PA in 1825 died ca. 1830 as she does not appear in the 1830 census with Jacob and his 4 small children. By 1840 he had moved to Chester Twp, Wabash Co., IN. It seems he married another Sarah, either there or before he left Wayne County. I would be interested in any Heckathorn information. The name also is sometimes spelled: Heckedorn, Heckinthorn, Heckathorne, etc. Many thanks, Carole Schetter, Highlands Ranch, CO

    2. Does anyone have any info on Enoch (1819) and Jacob (1815) WINKLER that were born in Wayne, Co, OH? Can anyone recommend how I could find any type of recorded birth for them. Looking for any suggestions on how to break through this brick wall. I'm not sure if they were German or part Indian and don't know what there religion was. I understand that Wayne County Probate records didn't record births before 1867. I think their parents Fanny & Lawrence came from Burke Co, NC to get away from slavery. All suggestions will researched. Thanks for your help and have a great day! Sandy

    1. [OHWAYNE] Emanuel Mater/Mateer/Matter - 1830
    2. Arthur Laube
    3. Bob and Joy - your messages combined to give an excellent documented account of a Emanuel Matter, born 1847 in Paint Township - died 1943, his two wives and several children. I will put this family together in a Family Tree Format and post it on this list. Emanuel's parents remain shrouded in mystery. I believe his father was Emanuel Mateer, born 1830 in PA., who in 1850 was in Eagle Boarding House, Wooster. Bob, in the 1880 census is Emanuel Mater/Mateer/Matter, age 50, born PA, not to be found? He may be dead. I will try to find him in 1860 and 1870. If his father is dead or missing, the son might have no way of knowing where his father was born. I thank you again - and best regards Hal

    2. Arthur Laube
    3. I wonder if someone can help by looking up some of these records - I have been tying up loose odds and ends on Emanuel Mater/Mateer/Matter/Motter. I have several lines of his antecedents going back through Pennsylvania to Germany and Alsace. He was born Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1830. He grew up as the first railroads were built- for a time the MainLine between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh used cars that both ran on rails and floated as barges on the canals. As a sixteen year-old he came to northern Ohio with the first rails of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Emanuel married about 1846. He probably married a daughter of Samuel and Magdalena Graber, in Paint Township. She is not in the 1850 census and must have died when their son Emanuel was born in 1847. The infant, Emanuel, was left with his maternal grandparents while the father went off to work - no doubt on the railroad. I have this census information for 1850, Wayne County Mateer, Emanuel Location : Wooster Page # : 452 He is a single man 20 years in a boarding house. Matter, Emanuel Location : Paint Twp Page # : 102 This one is three years-old living in the household of Samuel and Magdalena Graber( Reported to be Gürne). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here is where I need help: Three census years - two men in each - Emanuel Mater/Ma-otter/Mateer in Ohio, Wayne County, 1860, 1870, 1880. There are two Emanuel's each year- Emanuel born 1830 in PA and Emanuel born 1847 in Ohio. February 13, 1873, Emanuel(probably the son) is reported to have married Julie Matilde Nicot, b: 1853. Reportedly they have a son named , Edward, who dies soon after birth. Is this documented? What a tragedy if this is so. Or is this the father who may have married a second time. The two Emanuel's are probably still in Ohio in 1880 and that entry may clarify this puzzle. I would greatly appreciate your assistance. I will put this story together and when I do I will be glad to either publish it in sections on this list or send to those who might be interested - Best regards Hal ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In addition to the census records: There should be a marriage record about 1846. A Baptism of the infant Emanuel in 1847. A death or burial record of the wife in about 1847. One marriage is reported as February 13, 1873 - the age of the bride was given but not the groom? There may be another marriage after about 1850. If there was another death connected with childbirth there should be a record - cemetery records. If so what religion? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a bit confusing - there are surname changes that are hard to believe - if you do find something I would ask that you put it on this Wayne rootsweb so that it becomes part of the invaluable archives of this mailing list.
