I don't have the guidelines for Holmes county, but, understand that Wayne Co. has Probate records from 1852, Birth records from 1867-April 1900, Death records from 1867 to April 1908, and Marriage records from 1813. Hope this helps. MK McEntire Lund

How far back do the records at the Wayne County and Holmes County courthouse go? What would be the oldest birth, death, marriage and property records available?
Hi, Could you repeat for me that address for the cemetery site that now has the pictures of the Franks family cemetery stones. I lost it. Thanks. Susie Holderfield
Hi - Earlier this week I saw that the FTM site has a section called the "Virtual Cemetery." I of course typed in "Franks" to see what might turn up and found some tombstones of Paulding Co. OH relatives. I thought this looked like an interesting idea, and have started adding some scans of photos I've taken from visits to Jacobs Lutheran Church Cemetery in Fayette Co. PA, as well as some Wayne and Holmes Co. OH cemeteries. (I also have to credit our Franks cousin Chris Coleman, as some of these JLC photos are hers!). Hopefully these pics will be of interest to some of you! http://www.genealogy.com/vcem_welcome.html Susan Franks Leininger
I have transcribed this township and would be glad to send fellow list members the information on any household listed here. Listed here are: 1) The people whose names appear on the same line as the dwelling and household number (it looks like in almost all cases they might be the "head of household", although this Census doesn't designate a head of household). 2) The name of each person in a household whose surname is not the same as the surname on the previous line. This transcription has not been proofread. I may have made reading errors or typing errors; please use these as clues to your own research. I would really enjoy getting any corrections you have. According to an 1880 census for Missouri, my ggg-grandfather Samuel Penick was born in Wayne County Ohio. Does anybody out there have any Penick's in their family files? He was born approx 1838 and had a brother named Nass which I later found is short for Manassa. Penick is spelled many ways, Pinnick, Pennock, Penix and so on. Thank you Debi abbent@san.rr.com
Hi - For those of you who are descendants of Michael Franck/Franks of Fayette County, PA (c.1725-1793) and missed the opportunity to purchase the 1979 publication of the Michael Franks family history, there should be a reprint of this book available next year. A number of Michael Franks' descendants settled in the Doylestown, Applecreek, Moreland, Fredericksburg, Congress areas by 1820; other descendants continued to migrate to Wayne Co. throughout the 1800s. Some of the related surnames include Adair, Arnold, Badger, Benepe, Bonewitz, First, Fluhart(y), Hatfield, Hoffman/Huffman, Hostettler, Leckrone, Matthews, Miller, Routson, Smith, Wasson, Zimmerman. The original project was undertaken by genealogists Alice Rowley Franks and Donald Sublette, and was sponsored by the Franks Clan Association in Uniontown PA. The reprint will be a profitless endeavor, and this new "edition" will also include a much-needed everyname index. We have also included a new "foreword" which briefly addresses some of the issues of inaccuracies/omissions in the original book. Cost of the reprint will be finalized after the book has finished being retyped and indexed. It is also dependent to some degree on the number of books printed. We are interested in hearing from anyone who might be interested in a copy of the book so that a rough estimate of the needed copies can be made. Please contact me at sflein@aol.com if you have any questions on the reprint, or if you may be interested in a copy of the book. Thanks! Susan Franks Leininger
We would like to invite you to view a photograph (which is our favorite of all the photographs we have so far posted!) of the WAYNE County Infirmary on The POORHOUSE STORY website (a clearinghouse for 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com This is wonderful because it is actually a photograph with what appear to be the actual inmates dressed-up and seeming to enjoy posing for the photograph. I would guess it was taken about 1920? If you have been to the website recently, you may need to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material. If you are new to the site, DIRECTIONS: at the homepage (link above)click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on OTHER STATES, then on OHIO on the table of states. Then scroll down past the first few pictures to where we have links to others. There are other pages on The POORHOUSE STORY which may give you some more interesting perspective on poorhouses (or infirmaries, as they were called in Ohio)... they are all linked off the homepage and include (among others) the HISTORY page, LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS, and FEATURED ARTICLES. The only way this website will grow is through the suggestions and submissions of readers. So we welcome your e-mail and your postings to the message board. Hope you enjoy the site! Also looking for information re: their granddaughter, Mahala Sorrels SWORDS, reportedly (per her obit.) born in Wayne Co., OH 15 Mar 1847, d/o Absolom and Mary (FILBY) SWORDS. By 1850 this family had removed to Knox Co., OH, but other family members (aunts/uncles/cousins, etc.) may have still been in Wayne Co. Any help most appreciated!! Brenda Joyce
Your Feeman's are all in Canaan Twp. I don't know if you meant to send to the entire Wayne Co. List, but you did, so I checked the book "Wayne Co Ohio Burial Records", published around 1975 by the Wayne Co Historical and Genealogical Societies. I volunteer to do lookups from this book via email. The people you are looking for are listed, would you like the information, or do you already have it? -Jennifer http://www.wayne.lib.oh.us/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohwayne/library.htm "He alone deserves to be remembered by his children who treasures up and preserves the memory of his fathers." --Edmund Burke (1729-1797) Researching: GRIFFITH, MATZ, DEHAVEN, SPEICHER, COBLE, MOORE, BRANDENBURG, FOLTZ, WOLGAMOTT, HIMES, EASON, LATIMER, FAFLIK, SCHWARTZ, RUSSELL, LYNN, ZEMAN, STROEMPL, WAYNE CO.
