    3. >From the Jan 1 1919 Noble County Leader: COLUMN 5 Aaron GROVES and wife, of Beverly, visited friends at this place last week. ***** Mrs. E.B. CALE and daughter, Miss Dot, spent the holidays with friends at Byesville. ***** H.F. HANCHER and wife spent the holidays with their son, Kenneth, and wife at Columbus. ***** U.M. MARING, of Hiramsburg, spent last Thursday with his mother and sister at this place. ***** H.C. McKEE and wife spent Christmas with his brother, Harley, and family at Cumberland. ***** J.S. HEDGE and wife, of Zanesville, spent Christmas and the holidays with Caldwell and Dexter city relatives and friends. ***** John RUSSELL, of Buffalo township, was an agreeable business caller at this office while in Caldwell last Thursday. ***** Hon. D.J. GREEN and wife, of near Renrock, have gone to St. Petersburg, Florida, where they will spend the remainder of the winter. ***** Mrs. Clayton McKEE, residing north of Caldwell, recently underwent a severe surgical operation at the Mt. Carmel hospital at Columbus. ***** Leonard DEVOL, of near South Olive, spent last Friday with friends at this place and while here was a pleasant business and social caller at this office. ***** J.H. SHANKLAND and wife have gone to Cambridge where they will spend the remainder of the winter with their daughter, Mrs. C.V. GRAHAM, and family. ***** R.C. DEVOLLD, of Zanesville, visited relatives and friends near Caldwell last week, and while in town Thursday was an agreeable business caller at this office. ***** Allen DRAKE, who is in camp at Quantico, Va., spent Christmas and a few days last week with his parents, J.W. DRAKE and wife, and friends at this place. ***** For Sale - Farm of fifty acres with buildings. Also a farm of seventy-five acres with buildings. both located east of Caldwell. DEVOL, of near South Olive, was in Caldwell on business last Friday morning and while here called at this office and became one of The Leader's long range subscribers by extending his subscription to May, 1920. ***** A civil service examination will be held at Caldwell on Saturday, January 11, 1919, to fill the position of rural mail carrier at Caldwell and Harrietsville and vacancies that may later occur on other routes in this county. ***** William R. DAVIDSON, of Center township, was in Caldwell on business last Saturday and while here called at this office and boosted the circulation of The Leader toward that proposed five thousand by addressing his name to its subscription list. ***** Members of The Leader's limited mechanical force have been caught by the influenza during the past week and because of this the type for this issue was "set" at the Sunday News office at Zanesville. Much lately received matter intended for this issue is unavoidably omitted this week. ***** The all out of join summer weather had its back broken last Tuesday afternoon by a lightning and thunder shower. The phenomenon was accompanied by high wind and was followed by a drop in temperature, sleet, rain and freezing weather. Those who hoped for a white Christmas had their wish gratified Wednesday morning, for snow fell and was evident in protected places. Winter weather set in and more snow fell Wednesday night. ***** Lieutenant A.R. CLEARY, who has been for the past four months stationed in an aviation field near Arcadia, Fla., has been honorably discharged and has returned to his home near Whigville. Lt. CLEARY finished the primary course of flying August 19, 1918 at Gerstner Field, Lake Charles, La., and received his commission on the same day. He was ordered to Carlstrom Field, Arcadia, Fla., August 30 to take the pursuit course which he completed October 25. He was then sent to Dorr Field to take a four weeks course in aerial gunner, which was completed November 14. >From this time until his discharge, on December 12, Lt.
