    3. >From the Jan 15, 1919 Republican Journal in Caldwell OH JACKSON TOWNSHIP Editor Journal: Since our "squib" in last week's new letter relative to road improvement, as predicted then the problem has become contagious and Jackson, Sharon and Olive townships have "caught the spirit" and are in the front line trenches with bright prospects of going over the top. Their most enthusiastic meetings were held in Jackson last week, and several held between Big Run and Lowell in Washington county. A committee of almost a core of men are at work securing pledges for labor and without doubt from three to five hundred signatures will be secured and perhaps from five to seven hundred days labor pledged to open up a throughfare from Caldwell via Three Forks, Big Run and Lowell to Marietta in order to secure one of the postal routes offered by the government. Without doubt this route is the shortest and will be the easiest constructed of any yet proposed, besides it is located from five to ten miles west of the Duck Creek rail road and five miles from an interurban line or any navigable steam, hence justice demands that we be granted our most urgent request. ***** George WILLSON, of Hibbs Ridge, is sick of pneumonia following the flu. ***** H.E. BELL was a Beverly business caller last week. ***** We learn that Harry SMITH will soon move to Marietta, where he has secured employment. ***** James HENDERSON, of McConnelsville, visited his great grandmother, Mrs. Mariah WILLIAMSON, last week. ***** Loren CARREL had business at Lowell last Friday. ***** Jackson township is planning for a high school. Don't know but push. ***** W.J. CARREL, of Waterford, passed this way one day last week enroute to Caldwell and Belle Valley. ***** Mrs. Joseph GRANDSTAFF has been quite sick for several days. ***** The Lower Big Run school is closed on account of flu. ***** A good roads meeting will be held at Jackson townhouse Saturday evening, January 18. Everyone interested should attend. If you would like a photocopy of an article, please contact me. This and other Ohio newspaper transcriptions can be found on my website.
