The Ohio River located at Marietta and the Muskingum River were major routes for fugitive slaves crossing the Ohio River from Virginia. In all, there were 16 documented Underground Railroad stations in Washington County. There is a great MAP you can print out at: http://www.mariettaohio.org/ The Underground Railroad was the secret network of "safe" houses, back roads, rural barns, farms and tunnels that helped more than 40,000 slaves make their way through 22 states to freedom before and during The Civil War.
