Atlee Pomerene, United States Senate My Dear Senator Pomerene - I beg to acknowledge receipt of your communication of the 18th instant, transmitting a petition signed by business and professional men of Caldwell, Noble county, Ohio; also letters from numerous individuals and representatives of commercial organizations of Caldwell and other, urging the establishment of motor vehicle truck service between Marietta, Ohio, and Pittsburg, Pa., by way of Caldwell. I have noted very carefully the entire correspondence forwarded by you. In reply I beg to inform you that action has been already taken with a view to determining the road best suited to service of the character between the points referred to and when definite information in the premises has been furnished by a representative of the department who has been detailed to personally investigate the feasibility of the proposition I shall be pleased to communicate with you further. BLAKLEE, Fourth Assistant Postmaster General. ***** Harry MOORE, of Caldwell, is reported as having been wounded in action in France. ***** Ed SHEPPARD of Route Three, recently visited his sister, Mrs. Mary GINN, near Ava. ***** Miss Frances BEYMER, of Canton, Ohio visited her sisters and friends at her home at this place over Christmas. ***** Miss Pearl YOHO went to Pittsburgh, Pa., Saturday, to visit her brother, J.O., and wife for a few days. ***** A.B. HALE and wife, of Marietta, spent the holidays with the former's parents, J.L. HALE and wife, of near Keith. ***** Ed SANFORD and wife were recently called to Camp Taylor, Kentucky, on account of the serious illness of their son, Harry. ***** Word was received here that Thomas ADDIS was killed in action instead of being severely wounded as previously reported. ***** A Happy New Year and prosperous 1919 to each patron and reader of The Leader and to each of its friends and all others. ***** H.A. CUNNINGHAM of near Whigville, was in Caldwell on business last Thursday afternoon and while here was a substantial caller at this office. ***** Mrs. William HARSH has been at Summerfield for some days past assisting in caring for her mother, Mrs. N.M. MEEK, who has been seriously ill from pneumonia. ***** Wanted - Woman to cook lunch in manufacturing establishment six days a week. Fourteen persons to serve. Also keep office clean. Steady employment. Pay good wages and furnish living quarters; furnished apartment of three rooms. For further information address Manufacturer, 635 Forest avenue, Zanesville, Ohio. ***** Otmer SCHEHL, who suffered a shrapnel wound in the leg while in active service in France, and was later brought to the United Stated and taken to a hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, for special treatment, is spending a delightful ten days furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. SCHEHL, of Stock township. He is the first boy from that section to return from overseas. ***** Litutenant Guy WILKINSON, a member of the Fifth regiment, Second division of the marines, who was in the famous battle of Chateau-Thierry, along with Adison CLEARY, Edward HARTLEY, Forest RACEY, Dean BOWRON and Erwin DANFORD, Noble county boys, was recently greeted by a large audience in the Caldwell Presbyterian church. Seated on the platform with him were First Lieutenant BLAKE, of Fort Dodge, Iowas; Second Lieutenant Donald HARKINS, of Camp Hancock, Georgia; Corporal James McADAMS, of the Ohio Military Training school at Cincinnati, and Seaman BATES, of the Athens Training School. Lieutenant WILKINSON tell an interesting story of the Chateau-Thierry battle which lasted eighteen days and in which he was wounded in the left arm. Noble county is certainly proud of all her boys who participated in this noted engagement. This and other transcriptions are on my website.
