Debbie: As our Washington County expert, perhaps you could help me with a death records question. My grandfather's brother, John Henry Chapman, died the 3rd of January, 1870, per his obituary (which was just a line or two and only gave his name, date of death and cause of death ....typhoid). However, when I contacted the county probate/death records office, I was told that there is no record of his death, although death records in this county go from 1867 to 1908. Are the death records for that period usually so sketchy? It's not as though he died and was buried in an unmarked grave in his backyard ....there's a fairly elaborate monument for him in Mound Cemetery. Thanks much, for any insight you might have on this.
