    3. Hello, Debbie, I am most thrilled to tell you that I took your advice and contacted the gentleman that you suggested at the Library and early last evening I received an email from the Library (not the man you mentioned) stating that the obituary had been found in the Marietta Times for 26 Dec 1945 and that after providing my address they would mail it forthwith at the nominal cost of $1.10. Of course I have done that and am looking forward to receiving same. I surely do thank you because when I went to the genealogy site of the Library it was in the process of being done. I just never thought of overriding it and going directly to the library. Also, I have printed out your message and will keep it handy for future reference as it seems to have good information in it. My husband's mother and family and her parents and grandparents all lived in the Marietta area and the family home is still on 6th St. and it is still owned by the family. The youngest ones are not interested in the past and the older ones are gone. Thank goodness the records are still there. I really appreciate your help. However many death notices and obituaries do make other newspapers in Ohio and other states. Take for instance, Cambridge, Lancaster, and Zanesville, Ohio historical newspapers on ancestry.com do carry a few from the Washington County, Ohio area. Zanesville newspapers do have alot of people mentioned from around the Lowell and Beverly area, since those places are closer to Zanesville (Muskingum Co.) area. I have transcribed a few of them. You can find the ones I have transcribed on the "LINKS" site under the Death Notices section on page 3. Maybe someone who subscribes to this List, and lives in the Marietta area can do a look-up for you in the microfilm at the Genealogy Library. I don't live in Marietta any more, or I would be more than happy to help you in anyway I can. I can tell you from my experience, that the subscribers to this List is one of the most friendy and helpful people, who help each other with their "brick walls". It seems that someone ALWAYS comes through for me, depending on what resourses each subscriber has. I will keep checking to see what I can find out for you online. If I find anything, I'll email you with the results. One other suggestion is to put your query on the GEPHART mailing list. Maybe someone who is researching the same family member, may have his obit. You might also want to try to email the Marietta Times about the obit. 3. Helen; I am soooooo glad for you. Every time I find a piece of the HUGE puzzle, I act just like a little kid at Christmas. It's the people on this List and the ones at the Washington Co. Library that help make that happen for many, many people across the United States who do research in Washington County, Ohio. Washington County was the melting pot for many pioneers who traveled to the western parts of the US, because it being the first organized settlement in the Northwest Territory. And when the government had no money to pay the Revolutionary soldiers they paid them with land grants. Many men bought shares of the Ohio Company. Back in 1788 Washington County took up most of the eastern half of Ohio. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) Ernie Thode and his staff are a Godsend. :o) And believe me, when I die, I have left it in my Will a donation and for any memorial contributions be made to Washington County, Ohio Library Historical and Genealogy Dept. because they are deticated in helping others. With the way our government funding is today, can you imagine what it will be like a decade from now. With more funding, the Library can do more for people like me and you. Anyway..........I too, could care less about genealogy when I was a child. My parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents would always tell me, that we were related to this person or that person in Washington Co., but sometimes did not know how we were related. I can remember several of my friends saying to me while I was growing up...."God, you seem to be related to everyone in Marietta." ha ha When I was in the 7th grade, I had this Ohio History teacher, by the name of Bert Devol, who knew alot about Washington County and my family history and when I made it to high school, Bert and Phil Crane (a MHS History Teacher) started to plant the roots in my interest in Washington Co. History and genealogy. (I graduated in 1977). It was the only subject in school, that I made straight A's in, because I liked it. (I won't tell you what my other grades were like. ha ha) About a year before my mother, passed away in 1989 I started to do research in finding out just HOW all these people were related to me. She was interested in it too. I didn't get serious about it until after she died, and with the help of my uncle, Dewey Johnson and all his stories from memory, things started to come together. Most of his stories coincided with the records and documents I could find. That was when I was living in Marietta, and could get to the Library whenever I wanted. When I moved, I had such a hard time continuing my research until I got a computer, which was back in 1997. I then subscribed to rootsweb Washington County, Ohio Mailing List and started to post queries on several different surname boards, etc.... Then low and behold, with the help of the many people (some researching the same lines that I was) things started to fall into place. People would email or snail mail me documents, and not charge a dime for it. Take for instance, I could not get past my great-great grandparents (Mankins, and Parke lines) until 1997. Now, as of present, I have found out that my great-great grandparents were descendants of 2 important people (William Bond Mason, and Major Asa Coburn) that played a part in the very beginnings of Washington Co. History. I also have been able to go way beyond that to link my family history to the late Princess Di (Spencer), and Roger Conant the founder of Salem, MA. Now that most of my mothers' brothers and sisters have passed away, I only have my Uncle Dewey, who is 78 yrs. old to tell me all the stories that I could care less about when I was a kid. On my fathers' side, the NOLAND genealogy was about 80% completed. My dad's brother Jesse, and his wife had done most of it in the early 70's and '80's BEFORE anyone had a computer. I have had lots people email me asking me questions about WHY do I spend so much time with compiling information, transcribing documents and doing my websites about Washington Co. The above story that I have just told you in this email is why I do it. People have done alot to help me, and plus it's an addiction. ha ha Enough of me rattling on about my success stories. I'm glad you found the obit. Stick around, and continue to subscribe to the List. I'm sure if you ever hit another Brick Wall, the people here, and/or the Genealogy Library will do their best to come through for you. DEB PS. I still have a few brick walls that I have not been able to break through yet in Washington Co., but with help they are starting to crumble. Some day they WILL fall. :o) ----- Original Message ----- From: "ROBERT PETTY" <RHPETTY@msn.com> To: <OHWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 3:21 AM Subject: Re: [OHWASH] Obit for George Gephart, 1945 > Hello, Debbie, > > I am most thrilled to tell you that I took your advice and contacted the gentleman that you suggested at the Library and early last evening I received an email from the Library (not the man you mentioned) stating that the obituary had been found in the Marietta Times for 26 Dec 1945 and that after providing my address they would mail it forthwith at the nominal cost of $1.10.
