I appreciate your research. I think you are digging in the right area. Covington Magruder, I feel, is Maria's brother. I have thought so for some time, but could never prove it. I could find no parentage for either of them. Yes, it sometimes is confusing with the Matthews, Magruders and Leggs. I have the same problem and sometimes my head just spins as I try to figure them all out. I have come across records online that are Legg wills or other legal documents and witnessed by Thomas Matthews. That is each side of my ancestry, maternal and paternal. You are a great detective.
