    1. [OHWashin] Mill Branch Covered Bridge Dedication Ceremony (Sept. 28th)
    2. Debbie Noland Nitsche
    3. MILL BRANCH COVERED BRIDGE BARLOW FAIRGROUNDS BRIDGE DEDICATION CEREMONY SUNDAY, 1:00 PM, SEPTEMBER 28, 2008 At 1PM, Sunday, September 28, 2008, Miriam Wood, editor of "Bridges and Byways", a publication of the Ohio Historic Bridge Association, and author of the Covered Bridges of Ohio, An Atlas & History, 1993 and co-author of the Covered Bridges of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, 2007 will address the assembled. Miriam Wood is a charter member (1960) and corresponding secretary of the bridge association. She is the recipient of the "Public Awareness Award" from the Ohio Historic Preservation Office and has nominated over 50 Ohio covered bridges to the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge committee members, Darrin Morris, Barlow Fair Board Member and Brad Payne, former Board Member worked with community member and project coordinator Jean Yost to carry out the plan to restore the bridge after floodwaters from Hurricane Ivan shifted the bridge and uncovered decayed support timbers. The cost of restoration was estimated at between $30,000 and $40,000.00. The need of repair was urgent and local citizens, corporations and historical groups worked together to complete the restoration for $10,000.00 and hundreds of hours of labor and several thousands of in kind professional services and materials donated. The Righter Co. was hired to complete the heavy timber repairs and local talent prepared for the timber work and finished up after they were done. A flood plain survey was completed and the bridge was raised 8" to be out of flood waters. Donors and volunteers for this project and an earlier 1999 project: Barlow Fair Board, Western Washington Co. Historical Society, Muskingum Valley Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Historic Bridge Assn., Burt Buildings, Blaney Hardwood, Haessly Hardwood, Mulryan Surveyors; Don A. Yost Construction, Bob Badger, P.E., Mike Johnson, P.E., Joe Proctor, Dan Proctor, Matt Proctor, Sweet Apple Farm, Brad Payne, Architect, Commissioner Sam Cook, Pioneer Pipe, Jeremy Stahl, Matt Lang, Scott Mayle, Darren Morris, Dana Morris, Dave Kesterson, Belpre Historical Society, Washington County Bicentennial Committee, Righter Co., Price Inland, Sharon Stone Company, Warren High School volunteers and Jean Yost. The Mill Branch Covered Bridge had extensive work completed in 1999 with community members replacing the siding and roof. All materials and labor donated. The Western Washington County Historical Society provided funds to paint the Ohio Bicentennial logo on the bridge in 2003. We thank those involved in the restoration. The Mill Branch Covered Bridge will have a historical marker manufactured by Sewah Studios of Marietta installed later in the year. The sign will be inscribed: MILL BRANCH COVERED BRIDGE WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO The Mill Branch Covered Bridge spanned the Mill Branch of the Little Hocking River, 0.3 mile East of Ohio 339 in Belpre Twp. This 19th Century "multiple king post" truss bridge consisted of one span of 59', with 5' overhang at each end, 12' of width and 11 ½' height and a 7 ton load limit. In 1980, the bridge was moved to the Barlow Fairgrounds by the county. In 1995 the Barlow Fair Restoration Committee began a five year restoration of the buildings on the fairgrounds. In 1999 volunteers and donors worked on the bridge, replaced and painted the siding, constructed new approaches and installed a new roof. In 2007, major restoration of structural beams was completed by the Righter Company and community volunteers and donors. I want to thank the fair board for all their help through this project. The fair grounds are looking good and you are all to be commended. All donors will be listed on a sign installed inside the bridge. Thanks Jean Yost [email protected]

However I now find that it is closed due to funding problems, so I am looking for someone who can connect me with a researcher who knows a lot about the riverboat trade in the mid-1800's. I'm trying to find the names and a little information about my great grandfather Jacob Flowers's boats. He had three boats on the Ohio River, two of which were destroyed in a storm. I wonder if the boats were licensed or if there was a registration requirement at the time and where that might be found. Thanks. Ruth Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carolyn Heijn Peth" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 19, 2008 2:45 PM Subject: [OHWashin] 1858 Map Hello All, I have found a wonderful map of Washington County 1858 It is from survey records and states the name of the land holder for each Range and Allotment.along with creeks schools, saw mills coal mines etc. There is an S. Brown (possibly my g.g. grandfather Samuel S. Brown) in the Waterford - Coal Run Village area Range X (10 ) Allotment V (5) #12 77 I/2 This map can be found on line Library of Congress Maps - General. Search for Washington County 1858. It is a great map. Zoom in and out as you move about the whole county. Does anyone know of resources ie land or, tax records that would show who owned these parcels in 1858 ish ?. It is not evident to me when the Brown family came to Ohio and how they got land. Of course these lands changed hands many times I am sure. The 1830 thru 1880 census shows Samuel S. (m.Harriet La Grange) in Waterford. Pretty sure he was born there.Abt 1807 I am having a "Brick Wall" with his father Jesse Brown. Census records states he (Jesse) was born in Connecticut. Maybe 1776.Jesse was married to Relief Story 1799 in Waterford. I won't even ask about my other g.g grandfather Jacob B. Mason in Adams Range IX (9) Allotment IV (4) as there are so many J Masons listed on the map. Lots of work ahead to sort out all those Masons as many of you know. Thanks for any help or suggestions. I can hardly wait till the next time I go up to Ohio to visit and actually get to see where they lived. It is probably not still there, but at least I will be able to get a general idea of where it was and that will be great. Vicki Lang Is anyone looking for this LANG family?
