    1. [OHWashin] Maritime records
    2. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am trying to verify the death of John Phelps who lived in Marietta from about 1798-1812. He appears first on the 1803 census. From information that I have obtained from various sources, John was either a river boat captain or sea captain. He married the dau of David Blake (also a river boat captain), Sarah Blake who was born at Fort Harmar in 1787, in 1806. John apparently died sometime in 1812 or 1813 as Sarah married John Strait 26 Dec 1813 in Marietta. I can find no cemetery listing for John and an accounting for his estate (no will, he died intestate apparently) occured later in the 1820s. Are there any records of river traffic or licensing of sea captains or river boat captains? Are there any records of boat sinkings? Any suggestions gratefully received.
