    1. [OHWashin] Congleton yDNA Project---2009 Summer Sale
    2. Marleen Van Horne
    3. For those of you who have considered DNA testing as a aid in your family research, this is an excellent opportunity to dip your toe in the water. The 37 marker yDNA test and the HVR1 mtdna test are being offered together at a very reasonable price. Please contact me at [email protected] for the details. The Van Horne yDNA project is specifically looking for direct male line descendant of Jan Cornelissen, to be tested. In the four years of the project, no one has subscribed who has a verified pedigree back to Jan Cornelissen. The project also need descendants of Christian Barentsen. Preferably men with verified pedigrees back to Christian. This family has several members in the project, but their pedigrees are incomplete. We have other information that indicates they are descendants of Christian Barentsen. For Matthys Cornelissen, we have tested descendant of all three of Abraham Van Horn’s sons. For Cornelius Van Horen, the older son, we only have tested descendants of Abraham, his fourth son. The objective of the project is to test descendants of all of his sons, Thomas Van Horne, Matthew Van Horne, Cornelius Van Horne, Abraham Van Horne, James Van Horne and Daniel Van Horne. This summer sale is a perfect opportunity to fill out the genetic pedigree chart for this family. The sale price is valid from 9 June to 24 June. The test kits must be paid for by 30 June 2009. This project requires administrator approval before you can join. Please write to me at the above address for information on the sale, and also for the requirements for joining the project. The person tested MUST be a direct male line descendant of the immigrant ancestor. Marleen Van Horne Congleton yDNA Project

Heritage is the defining elements of one’s life that tells who they are and how they should live. Heritage then is the profile of our values, priorities and beliefs and rules we are guided by in our daily lives. Our Heritage begins in the life experiences of our ancestors and we will pass them on to our descendents, long after we are gone. Collectively, the heritage of a society gives rise to its culture.

    3. This could be a clue.... Interesting that a Joseph Harris exists in Liberty, Delaware County, Ohio in 1860. Numberated as # 131-136. Just 5 entries down, there is Ichabod Cole, Candace (Cole) Harris' brother, numberated as #136-141. 1. [OHWashin] Madeira Mamore Expedition to Brazil, Metropolis Mercedita & Richmond
    2. Bob Moyer
    3. Hello everyone, I have finished indexing the names for a new database for the Madeira Mamore Expedition of 1878 which involved constructing a railroad in Brazil by US engineers, contractors and laborers. The names are mostly PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD, WV and Ohio. My project started as a search for person named Philip BOWERS in my family tree who I finally found in one of the newspaper articles and my project since expanded into something much more. Since I had collected so much information I thought it might be a good time to share it with other researchers. The project consists of two web pages: 1) a source or reference page (bibliography) with links to where the names were found, and 2) the database of names to which it is linked You can access both at the web site below: http://web.rtmc.net/~bobmoyer/1878/sources.htm I you have a missing person from this time period you need to check the database, especially if they were from PA, NJ, NY, DE or MD. The names in the list are not currently found by searching the Internet or Rootsweb. Rootsweb support said the names will all eventually become indexed - indexing runs in two month cycles. Short Synopsis: The Disastrous American Expedition of 1878 that included the contractors P. & T. Collins (Col. George Earl Church) and the laborers who went to Brazil to build a railroad was also called the "The Railroad of Death" and a "railroad from no-place to no-where". It was estimated that a worker died for every sleeper that was laid in the jungle and the loss of workers was on a scale that rivaled the Panama Canal project. The purpose of this project is to create a database of names by transcribing newspaper accounts, books and other sources about the expedition. Careful attention has been given to separate these names from the later Farquar/Jekyll expedition of 1907-1912. Thousands of men from many countries lost their lives in both expeditions. I've read that many men kept diaries while working in Brazil and I have a few in my sources but I'm sure there are others. If you have anything to add I would welcome your contribution. Happy Hunting - please let me know if you find anything helpful. Sincerely, Bob Moyer Instructor, Ed2go - Genealogy Basics Researching the Pennsylvania names of Moyer, Rempp, Klug, Mattern, Magargal and BOWERS, the name that originally started this project.

    3. Carolyn... Below is an email that I recieved from Jean Yost, president of Marietta Chapter of SAR. You can email him and ask him the status of what is going on. But from what I understand, local historians are trying to form a partership with the OHS so Campus Martius won't close. Also the Ohio Historical Sociey put out a Blog yesterday (June 1, 2009) about the funding cuts. I don't know if the blogs are public or not, but you can try to access it. The url is http://blogs.myspace.com/ohiohistory In the blog, it also gives other historical cuts that will defently affect Washington County. If you can't access the BLOG, please let me know and I will send you a summary of what passed through the Ohio Senate on May 29th. On a personal note... I can't believe that Gov. Ted Stickland is doing this. I think that the museums can be saved if only the Ohio Historical Society gives up the right as owners of the museums. That way....people will start donating more if it was owned by the Washington County Historical Society and items won't be stored is some unknown warehouse that is unindexed and don't know where things are. But this is my own personal opionion. My question to OHS is... "Why haven't they proposed any options to allow the museum's to remain open by sending the ownerships to local Historical Societies throughout Ohio?" Don't make too much sense to me. I think these politicans are more POWER hungry then anything. And that's sad. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARIETTA MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT TO TESTIFY AT CAPITOL TODAY Cheyenne Lemasters, 8th grade, Marietta Middle School student will attend the Senate Finance Committee Hearings on Thursday, June 21, 2009. Miss Lemasters plans to testify on behalf of concerned residents of Washington County in the matter of FY2010 Ohio Historical Society; Museums and sites line item, with a request to the Ohio Senate to restore the $2 million in cuts proposed by Governor Strickland. ISSUE: FY2010 OHIO BUDGET; OHIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY, MUSEUMS "The Campus Martius and Ohio River Museums, along with 16 other Ohio Historical Society (OHS) sites, may close on June 30, 2009 without legislative action to restore cuts proposed by the Governor. From 2006-2008, the museum budget was $8.3 million. In 2009 the budget was cut to $7.1 million. In March 2009, Governor Strickland's 2010 Budget Proposal cut support for OHS sites and museum operations to $5.4 million. This 35% cut from 2008 ($2.9 million) is totally unreasonable. In 2001, OHS had 401 staff members. Today, the staff is down to 249. With the Governor's proposed budget cuts, the staff will be cut again to 210 and many museums statewide may be closed. We understand and share in the budget problems of our great state, but our state's history and our local heritage must be properly preserved. OHS has requested that a local community group partner with them to operate the Campus Martius and Ohio River Museums, providing $100,000 annually in support. In response, community members have established a Task Force to pursue this partnership idea. In April, the Ohio House of Representatives voted to add $750,000 to the OHS museum and site account. This is very significant, and we thank the Ohio House members for their support. However, we request the House reconsider adding the additional $1.25 million back into the budget for OHS. With the full $2 million reinstated, most museums across the state could continue to operate with longer hours and give the communities breathing room to pursue the partnership idea. We urge the Ohio Senate to vote for a budget with an extra $2 million added to the Governor's proposed budget to operate these museums and sites. We support the local Campus Martius and Ohio River Museum Task Force's recommendation and ask for your support in these efforts to save this integral part of our community." BACKGROUND Due to a funeral service on Thursday, I could not attend the hearing and requested Cheyenne to testify. Cheyenne is a very exceptional student and loves history. In April, after OHS announced potential closings of the museums, Cheyenne organized a rally at Campus Martius Museum in conjunction with This Place Matters. Check out a short two minute movie of the rally at <http://www.saveohiomuseums.org> The movie was prepared by the producer of the movie "Opening the Door West", a PBS documentary about Marietta, Ohio and the Northwest Territory. Here is Cheyenne's background; "I am an eighth grader at Marietta Middle School. I came across the program This Place Matters for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. After hearing the news that Campus Martius may be closed on July 1st. I immediately started contacting people at local schools, radio and news stations, trying to organize a large rally. I ended up with 150 people at the rally and I am now preparing to send letters and petitions to Governor Ted Strickland". 5/15/09 Bio: I am 14 years old and participate in dance, track and tennis. I am currently in Student Council and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and I am on the honor roll and Principal's List. On May 14 the Marietta Chapter Sons of the American Revolution awarded Cheyenne with the Student of the Year Award for her role in history related efforts. 3. Merry Anne... I don't have Joseph listed as one of Willard & Candace's children. Would you please send me Joseph's vitals so I can add it to my database. You said that you got Joseph's name from a DAR application. Was the person applying for DAR doing it under John Cole? I heard somewhere that Willard Harris was not born with that name. He changed it at some point, to dodge the Revolutionary War and before coming to Ohio. I've never seen proof that this actually happened so I don't have it documented. I can't find a RW pension record for him either, but that don't mean that he didn't serve. However John Cole, father of Candace did serve in the RW. He was part of Captain James Hill's Company, Col. James Daggett's Regt., Bristol, R.I., 1777. I have never seen the 1851 Estate record for Willard Thompson Harris either. Wonder if Joseph Harris' name is mentioned in that? He might be,,,,,that is "IF" Joseph didn't die before his father did. The children that I have for Willard Thompson Harris and Candace Cole are: 1. Romentha, b. abt. 1793, m. Malachi Cole (son of Asa. Hummm... This means, Romentha married her 1/2 cousin because Asa is the s/o John Cole and Mercy (or Mary) Wood. Candace was the dau. of John Cole and his 2nd wf. Susannah Salisbury) Romentha d. in May of 1865. 2. Averrill, b. Dec. 25, 1801 - Don't have anyother info. 3. Sarah, b. abt. 1811 m. George Cunningham in 1826 4. Charlotte, b. abt. 1812, m. Levi Riley Swan in 1830. Levi was the s/o Levi Swan and Mary Bradley. After Mary Bradley Swan died, Levi (Sr.) m. Dorinda Greene, d/o Willard Greene & Susannah Cole (d/o John Cole and sister to Candace Cole, who is Charlotte's mother.) 5. Emeline, b. abt. 1816, m. Milo Swan in 1836. They removed to Wilson County Kansas where she died in July of 1905. Milo is also the son of Levi Swan and Mary Bradley.
