I already have a lot of information for him when he located in Fayette County, Pa. Everything that I can find, says that he was born on a ship coming from Ireland. Unable to find shipping records in the 1757 era. Then I find the article below that says he was an emigrant from England and settled in Norfolk, Va. I appreciate your research. I think you are digging in the right area. Covington Magruder, I feel, is Maria's brother. I have thought so for some time, but could never prove it. I could find no parentage for either of them. Yes, it sometimes is confusing with the Matthews, Magruders and Leggs. I have the same problem and sometimes my head just spins as I try to figure them all out. I have come across records online that are Legg wills or other legal documents and witnessed by Thomas Matthews. That is each side of my ancestry, maternal and paternal. You are a great detective. Mineral Co., West Virginia is just on the other side of Allegheny Co. I haven't checked in Mineral Co. yet but I will. The earliest of the families above show up in the 1788 Cumberland Survey. They are: Nathaniel Magruder 20 lot 3578 Josiah Magruder 20 lot 3579-80 (There is some kind of familial relationship here as they have adjoining property.) Thomas Matthhew 5 3683 John Matthew Sr. 6/6 3398 John Matthew Jr. 5 3673 (This is probably a father with 2 sons. They are living in close proximity to each other.) 1800: There are 2 distinct groups of Magruders in the area. One large group living in the Upper Old Town area. They are: Elias Magruder (1 m 26-44, 1 f 45 & older, 2 f 16-25) Elias Magruder (1 m 45 & older) Nathe B. Magruder (1 m & f 26-44, 1 m under 10, 2 f under 10) Richd Magruder (1 m & f 45 and older, 2 m & f under 10, 1 m 10-15, 2 f 16-25) Sarah Magruder (1 45 yo female living with 9 slaves. Probably a widow) Zach Magruder (1 m 26-44, 1 f 16-25, 2 f under 10) A smaller group in Glade: Normd B. Magruder (1 m over 45, 1 f 26-44, 1 f under 10, 1 f 10-15) Wm. B. Magruder (1 m 45 and over, 2 slaves) According to the map, Upper Old Town isn't that far from the Mineral Co, WV state line. 1810: Only 1 is listed in Allegheny Co. Many of the others have moved out of state or to other Maryland Counties. Elisa (Elias) Magruder (2 m 45 and older, 1 f 45 and older, 2 f 26-44, 1 f 16-25, 1 m under 10, 1 f under 10) If Maria was born in 1803 she would be 7 in 1810 and this family has a female under 10. It's a possibility. 1820 Burgess Magruder, Cumberland Nathaniel P. Magruder, Westernport (1 m 45 & older, 3 f 16-25, 2 m under 10, 3 m 10-15, 1 m 16-18, 1 f 10-15) (In 1820 Maria would be 17 so this family is another possibility as they have 3 f 16-25). Zachariah Magruder, Election Dist. 4 (1 m over 45, 1 f 26-44, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 16-18, 1 m 16-25, 2 f under 10, 2 f 10-15) 1830 John Magruder (young family) Covington Magruder The Magruder family dwindled from an all time high in 1800 to hardly anything by 1810, 1820. By 1810 the following movement occured: Elias Magruder moved to Mongalia, VA (only 3 in family) Nathe Magruder moved to Montgomery, Maryland Wm. B. Magruder moved to Baltimore, Maryland By 1820 the following moved: Norman B. Magruder moved to Cotton, Switerland, Indiana Richard B. Magruder moved to Baltimore, Maryland By 1830 the following moved: ELIAS MAGRUDER MOVED TO JACKSON, PIKE CO., OHIO. (1 m 10-14, 1 m & f 50-59) Elias was one of the possible fathers for Maria from above. Would make sense he would move to the area his daughter lived in. (I hope I'm not mixing up the Legg, Matthews, & Magruder families. They are all running around in my head. ha) For Matthews family, I think I have it for you: 1800 Allegheny Co., Maryland: Wm Matthews Fifteen Mile Creek (1 m 10-14, 1 m 45 , 2 f 10-15, 1 f 45 ) 1810 Jno Matthews Dist. 5 (1 m under 10, 1 m 26-44, 3 f under 10, 1 f 26-44) John Matthews Dist. 2 (2 m under 10, 1 m 26-44, 2 f under 10, 3 f 10-15, 1 f 26-44) William Matthews Dist. 6 (2 m 16-25, 1 m 45 , 2 f 16-25, 1 m 45 ) (In 1810, Thomas would be 7 so either Jno or John could be his father. 2 possibilities) 1820 John Matthews Dist. 4 (3 m under 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 16-18, 1 m 16-25, 1 m 45 , 1 f under 10, 2 f 10-15, 2 f 16-25, 1 f 26-44) Probably father to the one below? John Matthews Dist. 5 ( 3 m under 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 26-44, 2 f under 10, 2 f 10-15, 1 f 26-44) (living in same general area as Zachariah Magruder. They are living next to a Spencer family. Could there be a connection there maybe a Matthews daughter marrying a Spencer man? Maybe that is why they named a kid Thompson Spencer?) William Matthews Dist. 7 (2 m under 10, 1 m 26-44, 1 f 26-44) Living close to the Village of Old Town. 1830 Allegheny Co., Maryland: John Matthews (name was misspelt Matthues) (1 m 5-9, 1 m 10-14, 2 m 15-19, 1 m 40-49, 2 f 5-9, 2 f 10-14, 2 f 15-19, 1 f 40-49)Living out in the county area close to the N. Branch River.) Thomas Matthews (name as above) (1 m 5-9, 1 m 20-29, 2 f under 5, 1 f 20-29)Living in the same place as John above; however, they are living next door to Covington Magruder. William Matthews (name as above) (2 m under 5, 2 m 10-14, 1 m 15-19, 1 m 30-39, 2 f 10-14, 1 f 30-39, 1 f 50-59)Living in the same location as John and Thomas. I believe this is your Matthews family that you've been looking for. I would check with Allegheny County to see if there are any wills for John, William, John Sr., and a Thomas. The 1788 Survey listed Thomas, John Sr., and a John Jr. The Thomas of that one would be an uncle, etc. By 1840 the following appear in Allegheny County: George Matthews, Selbysport, 1 m 30-39 (This one not sure if related to other Matthews as he has slaves and the others don't) James Matthews Dist. 7, 1 m 20-29 however he is living with an older woman of 40-49. She is probably a widow of one of the above Matthews. They have an older colored woman living with them? Samuel Matthews Dist. 6 1 m 20-29 (young family) I didn't find any of the John, William, Thomas from above. Perhaps they all ended up in Ohio. 1840 Ohio: John Matthews Aurielius, Washington Co., OH (older couple) (1 m 20-29, 1 m 70-79, 1 f 15-19, 1 f 60-69) John Matthews Salem (young couple) 1 m 30-39 and wife in her 20s. William Matthews Lawrence, Washington Co., OH 1 m 40-49 with wife the same age. 1850 is interesting: John Matthews 65 abt. 1785, Md, farmer, $20,000, Dist. 5 Catharine Matthews 62, looks like Pa Henry Matthews 40, Md John Matthews 31 Catharine Matthews 29 Noah Matthews 28 Maria Matthews 25 (Could be coincidence but it looks good for having a Maria in the family) Jno Matthews 31, Farmer, b.
