I don't know exactly how or even if I fit in. I think the Thomas Mendenhall who married Sarah Comley is the grandfather of one of my ancestors who was orphaned. But I can find no source document that connects my ancestor's mother Nancy to that Thomas' family, just a lot of circumstantial evidence. That's why I'm looking for a will or probate record for Thomas that lists Thomas' legal heirs. Circumstantial evidence is fine but as I'm particularly bothered that no one else lists Nancy as Thomas' daughter, I'm looking for evidence to prove or disprove once and for all that Nancy is Thomas' daughter. Until then I'm more or less stuck and that is how I do (or don't) fit in. Most of what I know about Thomas Mendenhall and his family is what I learned through the Mendenhall Family Association at Mendenhall.org. My apologies for not having more having more concrete information to share but mostly I'm just hoping that someone out there might know where I can find some kind of an estate record for Thomas that might help me connect to Nancy. Once I know where Nancy fits in, then I'll know for certain where I fit in. Hello, I'm looking for info on if there is a will or probate record for a Thomas Mendenhall, born about 1768 in Pennsylvania who is supposed to have died in Washington county in either 1852 or 1856. I've checked with the courthouse but they have no such document. Does anyone know if such a document exists and where I might find it? I wonder if it might be in either Guernsey or Noble county. Don From the book "History of Washington County Ohio" on page 716 There is an article on the Gard family. There are also pictures of Hiram Gard and Ataline Gard. David Gard left two sons, Hiram born May 11, 1804 and James Hiett, born January 2, 1828; and four daughters, Maria, born, August 20, 1806, Rowena, born December 20, 1810, Sophia, born January 3, 1815; and Jane, born March 15, 1817 (died in infancy by accidental scalding). Rowena married Edward Camp October 3, 1833, and reared two sons, George L and David H, both of whom served honorably in the war against the Rebellion (George L., during an engagement with the enemy, at the battle of Mission ridge, stopped one of the enemy's balls, which passed through many thicknesses of blanket and his trousers, and stopped in the midst of his silver lever watch, after entirely destoying it). and three daughters, Josephine, who married William Vincent; Augusta, who married twice, Dr. William Bates and J. R. Horniday; and Emma, unmarried. DALZELL of the Soldiers' Home at Dayton, who is often referred to as the only civil war soldier who never had any higher rank than a private, but has a reputation as a soldier that is nationwide, will be first assistant sergeant-at-arms of the house of representatives, having been chosen for the position at the caucus of the Republican members elect of that body, held at the statehouse Saturday afternoon. He has been a picturesque figure for nearly fifty years. Tall and angular in his youthful days he is not greatly bent by the weight of more than four score years that rest upon him. His hair which he has always worn long still hangs in a yellow mass upon his shoulders -- father time having failed to whiten it. Private DALZELL has been a lawyer, editor, solider and public servant by turns. Back in the early '70's he served a term or two in the house of representatives. His home formerly was at Caldwell. He has been an uncompromising Republican all along and as such has taken part in many a campaign in which his party has been victorious.
