    1. Re: [OHWASH] new rules
    2. Sondra K. Prine
    3. Along this line...I would like to say this: England just passed a law against SPAM, citing unwanted emails as an invasion of privacy. While here in the U.S., Congress is busy trying to figure out what to do...one Senator offered up a bill which would tax emails...otherwise putting a postage on each email. The tax, he said, would thwart massive spamming emails. I wrote to both Senators from Illinois in protest. Taxing is not the answer....go to whomever is paying to have the emails sent and fine them. It seems simple enough. Unfortunately, the word on the bottom line is spelled R-E-V-E-N-U-E which has nothing to do with safety, security, or our protection. It has only to do with our P-U-R-S-E. Sondra ELAINE TIPTON <TIPTON_E@msn.com> wrote: You go girl! I wrote to several senators before the law passed and when one of them cited 9/11/2001 to me, I wrote back and told him he was insulting my intelligence. The info on 100 year old birth/death records would be no good to terrorists. If they use modern ones, the $16.00 pricetag will not deter them from getting all they want. They are very resourceful and determined. It's easier for them to steal credit card info which is what scares me. I receive credit card offers in the mail every day. Many of them have my personal id on them and come with a stack of checks which can be used on my account. If the government wants to protect my identity (and I haven't even asked them to), they should look into this issue, not 100 year old birth/death certificates. And what makes it ok for the health department to walk into the library and confiscate anything? Don't they need a court order? Why haven't they raided the LDS, the Historical Society, the Genealogical Societies, even our homes? It is a crock. I vow to make public any info I have concerning the genealogy of my family without paranoia or fear that an airplane is going to zero in on my homeland. If the people in Washington would stop arguing and band together we could continue to live in the land of the free, instead of crushing our patriotism. The way things are going, we are on a fast train to government control of our private lives. It is a sad day. Thanks for letting me vent as well. Elaine ----- Original Message ----- From: Donna J Hughes To: OHWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2003 10:13 AM Subject: [OHWASH] new rules I find it strange that one of the reasons for changing the laws is so there can't be theft of identity but if you pay the price you can get all the records you want!!!! From three cents for an uncertified copy to $16.00 for certified copy is quite a jump in price. Mainly what we used the copies for was to verify our information was correct. We would get siblings etc. to help prove relationship, but no more!!! No more uncertified copies. Also our Ohio Historical Society Archives had to cut hours back. Now they are only open 3 days a week. This was because of cuts in funding. It gets harder all the time to get records. I find this very sad. I have had a lot of fellow researchers e-mailing me telling me their feelings about this too. If the Huron County genealogy society had permission to put the film in the library there should have at least been a hearing to discuss it before taking it out of the library plus the fact it BELONGS to the Society. Thanks for letting me vent my feelings. 3. Thanks CJ for letting us know about this crazy tactic of the Health Dept. They STOLE the microfilm from the library! The genealogy society BOUGHT the microfilm ;not the Health Dept.!! I would suggest the County Sheriff go & retrieve the microfilm from the Health Dept.at the very least & give them back to the genealogy society. Another thing,I can't believe the Library Director let the Health Dept. take the microfilm in the first place! Here in Indiana we haven't had that problem. In fact, in our county public library, we have lots of vital statistics about early residents with the full cooperation of our Health Dept. The library also has Catholic Church records(marriage, birth, baptism, death) from the Archdiocese there too. Thanks again for letting us know about this crazy plan of this Health Dept.I'm glad I don't have "roots" in Huron Co.if that's the way they treat public property! Many other people who subscribe to the LIST has done so much for me in assisting with my research on my family history, and send me things in the mail, that I find not only valuable to me, but others as well. Take for example, Shirley (Unitymarietta@aol.com) snail mailed me the SCHOOL RECORD BOOKS OF WILLIAM BIEDEL. I thought WOW! This would be helpful to others, so I typed it out and put it online. 3. I received a couple of large packets from Marjorie Davis Shelton concerning the Dudley Davis family about 3 yrs ago. In this packet she states Dudley Davis descends from the immigrant James Davis of Marlboro, Wiltshire, ENG and his wife Cicely Thayer of Thornbury, Gloucestershire, ENG. 1. James Davis and wife Cicely Thayer 2. James Davis Jr. and wife Elizabeth Eaton 3. Elisha Davis and wife Grace Shaw 4. James Davis and wife Sarah Bayley 5. James Davis and wife Rachel Marble 6. Dudley Davis and wife Mercy (Mary) Wood. Mercy (Mary) Wood line of descent: 1. Ebenezer Wood and wife Rachel Nichols 2. Jonathan Wood and wife Margaret ........ 3. Simeon Wood and wife Sarah Hildreth 4. Mercy (Mary) Wood and husband Dudley Davis My understanding was that Marjorie was going to donate this info to somewhere in Marietta, she may have also written an article concerning Dudley Davis. I haven't looked at this info probably for 2 and 1/2 yrs, so can't recall. Joyce
