    3. Cousins--- I agree that the state government, or at least the Ohio Dept. of Health, has gone insane. Of course, I live in Cincinnati, where local businesses and football teams routinely blackmail the city into providing perks for them at the taxpayer's expense, under the threat of moving to greener pastures. The latest was a new parking garage for Kroger's exec building downtown. This made me wonder how much I should demand of the city of Cincinnati for my continued residency. A new house, perhaps. Or free city maintenance on the one I live in. I'll take any profit if I sell the house, of course. And I'd like a new lawn, too! The city gave both stadiums dandy new turf; when is mine going to be delivered? Come to think of it, I'd better write to the Ohio Department of Health and demand that they pay me for the use of MY information. I provided it, free of charge, whenever anyone was born, married, divorced, or died. And if they want to KEEP my information, I expect them to pay me a yearly rental fee, and to have it promptly available if I want it in the meantime, AND returned if it's not being cared for properly. Try those arguments on your state reps and senators. Can't hurt. 3. While I agree with you regarding the REVENUE and our PURSE, it also has to do with PUBLIC SAFETY, HOMELAND SECURITY, INTERNATIONAL SECURITY and any other words that not only convey SAFETY, but actually PROTECT. Revenue/Taxes are a necessary evil because without it how would it be funded? Sure we could fine those who send the e-mails, but it would be just like so many other systems: (i.e. bankruptcy. Sure there are many people deserving of the break and WE all "fund" and support it one way or another, there's always the "bad guy/evil doer" who will find the "loophole" and abuse it. While here in the U.S., Congress is busy trying to figure out what to do...one Senator offered up a bill which would tax emails...otherwise putting a postage on each email. The tax, he said, would thwart massive spamming emails. I wrote to both Senators from Illinois in protest. Taxing is not the answer....go to whomever is paying to have the emails sent and fine them. It seems simple enough. Unfortunately, the word on the bottom line is spelled R-E-V-E-N-U-E which has nothing to do with safety, security, or our protection. It has only to do with our P-U-R-S-E. 3. I love the spirit of your E-mail Elaine and want to encourage everyone that believes that IDENTITY INFORMATION THEFT and IDENTITY THEFT w/o personal monetary loss are the concerns and not GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION on deceased relatives will have a greater impact on HOMELAND SECURITY than GENEALOGICAL RECORDS. "the further up the government food chain you go." (state food chain and national food chain) As a professional who has works in CONSUMER EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY I encourage YOU TO VOICE YOUR CONCERN (ELECTRONICALLY) TO: 1. YOUR STATES ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE. 2. THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION Yes, being a squeaky wheel to contact senators, legislators to get the bug going in them is important as well. The organization that tracks and makes the legal changes is the FTC. The do this by logging complaints and following national trends. I provide the e-mail links to assist: NY Residents can contact: Attorney General at: http://www.oag.state.ny.us (other states can't be searched by simply putting PA, OH, etc. into this site and I do not see a link between each states site so each state must be searched independently.) FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION: Can be contacted by going to: http://www.ftc.gov/ Unfortunately, after looking at the site briefly I do not see where the types of complaints/issues our list is suggesting. I would be willing to gather our collective complaints and contacting the FTC so please send me a copy of your complaint (or post the contents of your complaint if the ohwashing-l@rootsweb.com listserve permits.) I wrote to several senators before the law passed and when one of them cited 9/11/2001 to me, I wrote back and told him he was insulting my intelligence. The info on 100 year old birth/death records would be no good to terrorists. If they use modern ones, the $16.00 pricetag will not deter them from getting all they want. They are very resourceful and determined. It's easier for them to steal credit card info which is what scares me. I receive credit card offers in the mail every day. Many of them have my personal id on them and come with a stack of checks which can be used on my account. If the government wants to protect my identity (and I haven't even asked them to), they should look into this issue, not 100 year old birth/death certificates. And what makes it ok for the health department to walk into the library and confiscate anything? Don't they need a court order? Why haven't they raided the LDS, the Historical Society, the Genealogical Societies, even our homes? It is a crock. I vow to make public any info I have concerning the genealogy of my family without paranoia or fear that an airplane is going to zero in on my homeland. If the people in Washington would stop arguing and band together we could continue to live in the land of the free, instead of crushing our patriotism. The way things are going, we are on a fast train to government control of our private lives. It is a sad day. Thanks for letting me vent as well. From three cents for an uncertified copy to $16.00 for certified copy is quite a jump in price. Mainly what we used the copies for was to verify our information was correct. We would get siblings etc. to help prove relationship, but no more!!! No more uncertified copies. Also our Ohio Historical Society Archives had to cut hours back. Now they are only open 3 days a week. This was because of cuts in funding. It gets harder all the time to get records. I find this very sad. I have had a lot of fellow researchers e-mailing me telling me their feelings about this too. If the Huron County genealogy society had permission to put the film in the library there should have at least been a hearing to discuss it before taking it out of the library plus the fact it BELONGS to the Society. Thanks for letting me vent my feelings. 3. >From the Jan 15, 1919 Republican Journal in Caldwell OH JACKSON TOWNSHIP Editor Journal: Since our "squib" in last week's new letter relative to road improvement, as predicted then the problem has become contagious and Jackson, Sharon and Olive townships have "caught the spirit" and are in the front line trenches with bright prospects of going over the top. Their most enthusiastic meetings were held in Jackson last week, and several held between Big Run and Lowell in Washington county. A committee of almost a core of men are at work securing pledges for labor and without doubt from three to five hundred signatures will be secured and perhaps from five to seven hundred days labor pledged to open up a throughfare from Caldwell via Three Forks, Big Run and Lowell to Marietta in order to secure one of the postal routes offered by the government. Without doubt this route is the shortest and will be the easiest constructed of any yet proposed, besides it is located from five to ten miles west of the Duck Creek rail road and five miles from an interurban line or any navigable steam, hence justice demands that we be granted our most urgent request. ***** George WILLSON, of Hibbs Ridge, is sick of pneumonia following the flu. ***** H.E. BELL was a Beverly business caller last week. ***** We learn that Harry SMITH will soon move to Marietta, where he has secured employment. ***** James HENDERSON, of McConnelsville, visited his great grandmother, Mrs. Mariah WILLIAMSON, last week. ***** Loren CARREL had business at Lowell last Friday. ***** Jackson township is planning for a high school. Don't know but push. ***** W.J. CARREL, of Waterford, passed this way one day last week enroute to Caldwell and Belle Valley. ***** Mrs. Joseph GRANDSTAFF has been quite sick for several days. ***** The Lower Big Run school is closed on account of flu. ***** A good roads meeting will be held at Jackson townhouse Saturday evening, January 18. Everyone interested should attend. If you would like a photocopy of an article, please contact me. This and other Ohio newspaper transcriptions can be found on my website. 3. Debbie I am new to the email list. I have recently been going thru your links that you post to each email. I just found out I'm kin to Princess Diana -wow. I am of the the Constant Mitchell and John Fobes line out of New England. Princess Diana is my 10th cousin.geez. Washington Co.,Ohio --- My lineage is from Joseph Cook (1751-1824) who married Elizabeth Barker (1755-1816). Elizabeth Cook (1782-1839)their daughter married Timothy Darling(1779-1830) in Wood Co.,WV. They married 1803. Elizabeth Cook and Timothy Darling went to Jackson Co.,Ohio where they died. All of their children were born Wood co.,WV. Joseph Cook died 1824 in Parkersburg, WV/Belpre, Ohio. He's buried in Parkersburg. I am kin to John James, Pardon Cook. I am kin to Samuel P. Hildreth who wrote all those books. He is the nephew-in-law of Joseph Cook, son-in-law of Pardon Cook. I'm having a time locating his books. I think there are 2 in the Dallas Public Library which is 30 miles away in heavy traffic. And I can get microfilm of others on LDS. Right now I don't have the time to hunt them down. Thought maybe they would reprint them - maybe I could purchase one of the books. Right now I haven't found any to purchase. Wonder if anyone knows where to get a book. I am trying to find more data on Timothy Darling who seems to have come by himself from Vermont. He is in the 1810 census Wood Co.,WV. In 1820 census Wood co.,WV, there is a Robert and a Thomas Darling. I'm wondering who these other Darlings are. If you get the time, is there anything written on Darlings? Cindy
