Hi, I recently received an interment list from Lutheran Cemetery, Middle VIllage, Queens Co., New York for the grave owned by my 2great grandfather, Henry Dorr. One of the "occupants" was a Charles Dorr (born ca August 1842 New York) who died in January 1928 in Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio, and who was buried in Lutheran Cemetery in New York on 30 January 1928. Could SKS point me in the direction of an appropriate newspaper(s) in Marietta for 1928 so I can check it/them for an obit/death notice for Charles. I think it's a great idea, but I need to know who you are researching. If you don't want to submit an article, send me your SURNAMES along with your permission to add your email address to the LINKS page. As soon as I get at least 10 I will upload it to the page. Karen; I do not have the list for the Independance Cemetery. You might want to email Ernie Thode at the Washington Co., Ohio Historical and Genealogy Library, and ask him to do a look-up for you. There are several books on cemetery inscriptions transcribed by "McKitrick" (forget his 1st name). I bet you will find her info in one of those books. Ernie's email address is: ernie@wcplib.lib.oh.us Sorry I couldn't come up with anything, but I hope this tidbit of info will help you. :o) Debbie Noland Nitsche Diamonddeb@comcast.net Washinton Co., Ohio (A History and Genealogy Website) http://home.comcast.net/~diamonddeb/Index.html ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mdmcounty@aol.com> To: <OHWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 21, 2003 10:56 PM Subject: [OHWASH] Fwd: New Matamoras cemeteries > In a message dated 10/20/2003 9:13:38 PM Central Standard Time, > dalesmith@sssnet.com writes: > > > I note in an Aug 99 message on Rootsweb that you have information on the > > cemeteries in New Matamoras. Probate Record Vol. 5, pages 253, 496 SON: Joseph French EXR: son, Joseph French History of Washington County, Ohio 1788-1881 By H. Z. Williams page 691 By the year 1808 the settlers had become numerous enough to give the settlement a definite form. It lined the bank of the river, beginning with Oliver Aplin's home, over two miles in Grand View, extending down the river embracing the fields of Dickinson, Nathan Parr, David Smothers, Joseph Holdren, Benjamin Ridgeway, and Joseph Burris---all n what is to-day Grand View territory. Those of the settlement in what is at present Independence township have been mentioned. Above the next settlement below was that of Newport. It will this be seen that the history of the Ohio settlement of Independence merges into that of Grand View and Newport. The next addition to this settlement was the widow of Samuel FRENCH and her children. She came from Tyler county, West Virginia, in which Sate her husband had died. She was poor and compelled to obtain a living as best she could, nowhere certain of a long stay, and working in different places. She died about 1845. The children of Mr. French and herself were three---two boys and a girl. Only one of these is now living, namely Charles, who was born in Tyler county in 1803. Since his arrival he has always lined in the township. He was in those early days a youth who worked at off jobs helping Mr. Walder to construct Ridgeway's brick house for one thing, spending his leisure, which was probably ample, about the tavern with playmates, or learning to hunt with his stepfather, Thomas Simms. As Mr. French grew older he engaged in the nursery business---something of a farmer and has never been married. He now lives with his nephew, Martin O. Hanlon.
