Is anyone researching the OLIVER, SNODGRASS, PRIOR, CASSADY or MATHENY families? Charles SNODGRASS can be found in the following locations: Frederick Co., VA in 1770; Berkeley Co., WV in early 1770s; Monongalia Co., WV in mid 1770s, Fayette Co., PA in early 1780s; and Monongalia Co., WV in late 1780s. The second wife of Charles Snodgrass, Sr. was Barbara FOULK and it is believed that they married in the mid 1790s. The Foulk family owned the first pottery in Morgantown, WV. Barbara and Charles Snodgrass, Sr. lived on Pharoah's Run (now outside of Rivesville, WV and near Fairmont). After Charles died in 1808, Barbara brought their five children - Hiram, Beniah, Eli, Margaret, and Joseph - to Washington Co., OH in 1812. In 1824 Barbara Foulk Snodgrass married Nathan Matheny who had previously lived in Monongalia Co., WV and Athens Co., OH. When did Barbara Foulk Snodgrass Matheny die and where is she buried? When did Nathan Matheny die and where is he buried? Hiram Snodgrass (s/o of Barbara and Charles Snodgrass, Sr.) married Druzilla OLIVER in Washington Co., OH on April 21, 1819. Hiram died in 1879 and Druzilla moved to Comb, WV to live with her son David Snodgrass. Druzilla died on June 17, 1885 at the age of 93 years and is buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery (Ritchie Co., WV). Who were the parents of Druzilla Oliver? David Snodgrass (s/o Druzilla and Hiram Snodgrass) married Sarah Prior (or Pryor) on May 9, 1850 in Washington Co., OH. They went to Iowa and Kansas in a covered wagon but returned to Washington Co., OH in 1860-61. When did Sarah Prior Snodgrass die and where is she buried? Following her death, David married Sarah Jane Cassady sometime between 1861-1865. They lived in Washington Co., OH, Ritchie Co., WV, and St. Marys, WV (after 1910). Sarah Jane (1844-1917) and David Snodgrass (1828-1915) are buried in St. Marys. When and where did David Snodgrass marry Sarah Jane Cassady? Millie
GET NEW LIGHT ON JOHNNY APPLESEED Ohio Horticulturist Unearth Paper Written by Washington County Farmer New light on the life and character of Johnny APPLESEED, the pioneer zealot who went west with the old frontier, planting apple trees in the wilderness, is furnished by a recently discovered manuscript, written by a Washington county farmer who intimately knew Johnny. The paper is published for the first time in the 1922 annual of the Ohio State Horticultural Society. N. W. GLINES, extension specializing in horticulture at the Ohio State university, found the manuscript among the effects of his grandfather, W. M. GLINES, who was born at Marietta in 1806 and died there in 1887. A neighbor of Johnny APPLESEED'S whose real name was John CHAPMAN, Mr. GLINES recounts how the CHAPMAN family came to Marietta in 1798, and how Johnny, gathering seed from the cider mills, there planted his first nurseries in the wilderness. There, too, his father died, and Johnny and his brothers made a rough coffin and buried him. Then, Mr. GLINES writes, Johnny went to Delaware; thence to Sandusky; and thence to Mansfield. At all of these points in Ohio, he planted nurseries and tended them. He was in Mansfield as late at 1819, when he was 51 years old. After that he passed west into Indiana, making his last visit to his Marietta home in October, 1842. Mr. GLINES describes this visit completely and gives a vivid picture of the quaint, lovable old fellow, with his motley clothes, his in-kettle hat, his gentleness, and his love of all living creatures. Debbie, Myself and other family members came down with that horrid virus over the Christmas Holidays, some of us getting pneumonia out of it. My direct line of Spragues moved out of the Washington Co. area, probably mid 1830's. There were still relatives there of my direct line after this time period. There are some lost years for some of them, that I don't know where they were, until I have found them in another area of the country. They settled in other counties of Ohio, then to Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The Spragues you mention could very well have been descendents of Major Joshua, but I have also found other lines of Spragues that Settled in Washington Co. at later dates than mine. The surname JETT is not one I know anything about. Happy New Year to you and yours! Hugs, Carolyn I have been working on death reports and obituaries of people from Wash. Co. (1900 and up). In one article I found the name of a Mac SPRAGUE, a Marietta corner, who was working on the case of Investigation of the death of Hamilton JETT, 17-year-old Marietta boy who died at the State Industrial school at Lancaster. I found a few articles about this in a 1929 newspaper on ancestry.com I was wondering if Mac Sprague is connected to your line of Sprague's. I found this to be interesting because the Sprague name is predominate in the Lowell area. Hamilton's uncle, Fred AUGENSTINE, testified. The name of Augenstine also is predominate in the Lowell area. Do you know of anyone that researches the JETT surname??
Pat; I couldn't find anything on Joseph Chapman. Have you tried to email Ernie Thode at the Washington Co., Ohio Historical and Genealogy Library? Someone there may be able to look on the newspaper micro film for the week of September 12, 1906 and come up with a death notice and/or an obit.
