I can not recall the exact title - but the group who settled the Ohio Company Purchase before or about 1800 are documented - there is detail account of building the rafts on the PA rivers and floating down the Ohio to Marietta. Try searching the archives of the Washington County list for Ohio Company Purchase - if you don't find it come back to me and I will take the time to locate that reference - it is a good one... Also of course there was an important movement up the rivers of Kentucky but they were not from Fayette County. I have never seen the stats but I would wager a nickel that there more came to Southeastern Ohio say before 1820 by river than by land. Kathy, I don't know why Wesley wasn't mentioned in the article. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more said about Waterford twp. Other townships of "early Washington Co." that became part of other counties were not mentioned either. If the article were to be written today, I'm sure the author would consider ALL townships. Remember this was written in 1938. If you notice some of the punctuation's are not correct. For example: the author didn't put a ' when making the surname plural. Duh!!! Articles written today would be more correct. lol But, this newspaper of the 150th anniversary is "loaded" with lots of historical and genealogy info. I have just begun to extract some of the articles. Hopefully I'll find something that pretains to Wesley twp. Most of the smaller articles, I will be putting in my monthy newsletter. The larger ones like this one, I have to put my family history page, because it is more that the newsletter article space allows. The articles that I have extracted from the paper so far, that will be in April's newsletter are: 1. BROTHER OF DANIEL BOONE KILLED OPPOSITE MARIETTA 2. NEWPORT ONE OF EARLIEST SETTLEMENTS 3. INDIANS IN AREA CAUSED INSECURITY 4. BOY ESCAPED MASSACRE AT BIG BOTTOM 5. In the 1850 Census at Ancestry they list the 1850 census index and the 1851 tax record. The only image available to look at is the census. When they list 12 people with last name of Jones, there are 6 census images and 6 listed on the tax list. Hope this helps. I am sorry but I have not been able to find the answers to questions below. I have a Brooks family that are definately in the Lake Hope State Park in 1850, possibly 1840 too. All I know about the family before 1840 census is that there was an Archibald Brooks born in Ohio 1802 and probably his son Archibald Brooks Jr. born 1828, Athens/Vinton Ohio. I find them in both Madison & Brown Twps. Vinton County. I have searched and searched and not found an Archibald Brooks born 1802 in Ohio. Can anyone tell me where I might find the birth record for Archibald JR? The marriage info for his parents? In 1850 census Archibald JR is married. In ancestry.com there is a list of head of household for Vinton County. Although there are 2 of each person listed sometimes you cannot access the census info. Same with 1840 etc. I need to know why these names are listed twice in Ancestry.com? Just because there are 2 of ech name does not mean that every person there is actually 2 different people. There can't be every person in the census is a Sr and a Jr. Another question is that I have no idea where the family is before this. BUT if they were in this area since 1800, then where would these records be? Vinton County was created in 1850 and there are few records for this county before that. So if Vinton County was actually Washington County in 1800 where are these records? Then Athens County was formed in 1805. I need to know what county/Twp was Lake Hope State Park in 1805? 1810? 1820? 1830? 1840? I need to try to find out if there is a census for Archibald Brooks born 1802. I need to know if there was a Brooks family living in that place before the census info takes over. I am to the point of thinking that we have Archibald Jr and SR. And maybe Archibald Jr went by Archibald Jr as this is maybe a middle name and his father went by the first name. This is possibility but not for sure. There are John & John Jr in the Area, Sam and Thomas too I think have a Jr. It is possible that this is my problem in finding the info. Without knowing where to find the records I need I am at a loss for finding this family. Cindy _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? Just a comment from someone who has already used this... the response time is *much* faster than when ordering copies through the mail. I recently ordered three complete Civil War pension files and received them in less than two weeks. It used to take over three months! It might not be as fast for everyone but something has obviously changed. Hello!! I live about 2,000 miles from Washington County. I am looking for information on my ancestors Solomon Goss, but more specifically on Olive Scott and their daughter, Lydia Mary Goss. I need to verify information on Olive Scott and Lydia Goss for a DAR and Mayflower Society application. Olive Scott was born in CT. However, she was married to Solomon Goss and died in Washington County. I am hoping somone on this list might have access to birth and death records for both mother and daughter. Here's the info I have: Name: Scott, Olive Father: Scott , Obadiah Mother: Howe , Hannah Birth Date: 23 September 1757 City: Waterbury County: New Haven State: CT Country: USA I am also trying to obtain birth and death records for their daughter, Lydia Mary Goss. I have verification of her marriage to John Spracklen and photos of their gravesites in Green Valley, OH, but not her birth records or death certificate or probate info, etc. Family lore also has it that Lydia was the first white child born in Dayton, OH. If anyone has ANY information, and especially copies of actual records or publications in which they are mentioned, I would appreciate it! Below is info on Lydia Goss Name: Lydia Mary Mary Spouse: John Spracklen Birth Place: Wash, Marietta, OH Birth Date: 8 January 1796 Parents: Solomon Goss , Olive Scott I would GREATLY appreciate any assistance! THANK YOU! JH Seeley
