I research the John (3) SNOOK, Jr., family of Warren Co., who descended from William (1) SNOOK of Hunterdon Co., NJ. I recently received information on the RW Pension Application of William MARTS who became a part of this Snook family when his widowed mother Elizabeth (-) MARTS married John (2) SNOOK, Sr., by NJ license, 14 Dec 1779. The record contains a number of names that may be of interest to those whose Warren and/or Butler Co., OH ancestors originated in NJ, especially Hunterdon Co. RW Pension Application (S-2724) Warren Co., OH, 3 Oct 1832 William MARTS of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., OH, aged 68 years, 10 months, entered the service in (Amwall) (sic) Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ in May 1780, being about 16 years old, under Capt. In Jan., 1781, he enlisted in Capt. David SMALLEY's company. In Sep., 1780, he was under Capt. RANDOLPH of the VA Line. Abner HICKSON hired a substitute named George REED. Execs: wife Elizabeth, and my friend Peter ENT. Wits: Jacob SNYDER, John CORWINE, William HILSEE. Pro. 25 Feb 1777. Inv. by Jacob SNYDER and Judiah HIXSON, 20 Feb 1777. William was born abt.1764. He apparently married Elizabeth (3) SNOOK, daughter of George (2) Snook who was the brother of John Snook, Sr. In his 1803 will, George Snook mentioned daughter Elizabeth Marts. In 1807, William witnessed a deed between John and Peter (3) SNOOK, co-heirs of their deceased father John (2) Snook (Sr.) late of Amwell. In 1811, William was administrator of the Hunterdon Co., NJ, property of John (3) SNOOK, Jr., who married Hannah COOLBACK and had migrated to Warren Co., OH, by/bef 1803, where he died intestate in 1808. William sold the NJ land to Benjamin JOHNSON in 1812, and on the same day, Johnson and his wife Elizabeth sold it back to William Marts. A year later, he sold it to Peter (3) SNOOK, brother of John Snook, Jr. Also in 1811, William was Surveyor in the division of the dec'd James STOUT's land in Hopewell Twp. William Marts was mentioned in the 1813 Hunterdon Co. will of Elizabeth (3) SNOOK, the daughter of William (2) Snook, Jr., who was the brother of George and John Snook, Sr. In 1814, William and Christopher Marts owned land adj. to Lewis CHAMBERLAIN in Amwell Twp. (Relationship of William and Christopher unknown.) By the 1830 census, William was living in Warren Co., OH. He was enumerated in the Hamilton Twp. census as William MARTZ and in his household were one male 60-70 yrs.; one female 30-40 yrs.; and one female 60-70 yrs. The will of William Marts, of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., OH, signed 10 Sep 1842, & pro. 4 Nov 1844, named executor Peter W. SNOOK. The widow was Elizabeth Marts and the heir was son-in-law James HIXSON. A notation to the will abstract states Wm. was a Col. late of Montgomery Co., IN. James HIXSON and Abigail MARTS married in Hunterdon Co., NJ, 9 Sep 1807. Peter W. SNOOK was the son of William (4) SNOOK and the grandson of John (3) SNOOK, Jr. and Hannah COOLBACK. I would be interested in learning if William MARTS had descendants who lived in Warren Co., or in any other information on the family. Thanks to Frank Mounts and Betty Snook Welliver, it is possible for descendants of Wm (1) Snook to keep these families straight...most of the time. Judy Tooman
