1. Re: Land Patents
2. To Listers: I have followed with some interest, buyt have not checked the GLO files for Land Patents in Warren County recently, but isn't it possible that the reason that they are not found is that none (or few) were made following 1820? The BLM-GLO records have 1820 as the initial cutoff date. Remembering some history and looking at maps and charts reminds me that Symmes received as a purchase from the federal goverment, with George Washington signing, a sizeable number of acres between the Little Miami and the Great Miami Rivers north from the Ohio River to a line just north of Lebanon, OH. This was done well before the formation of Warren County in March 1803, at a time when Warren County lands were part of Hamilton County in the NW Territory. When Warren County was formed in 1803 it also included lands east of the little Miami which were part of the Virginia Military Reserve District, and these parcels had been granted to Revolutionary War participants from Virginia, I believe about 1798. Clinton County was at least partly carved out of Warren County in 1810. Perhaps other counties or parts of other counties also received lands from Warren County. While I don't know this history well, I do believe that a study of this history may contribute to an explanation of missing BLM-GLO Land patents from Warren County. Most, if not all land in Warren County had been purchased from Symmes (the original recipient) or from recipients of Virginia Military Reserve Lands before the BLM-GLO records begin, See Below: "...issued from 1820-1908." The following was copied 8/15/2000 from the BLM-GLO website. John Cowan The Official Federal Land Patent Records Site Welcome to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation web site. We provide live database access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States. Image access is provided to more than two million Federal land title records for Eastern Public Land States, issued between 1820 and 1908. Images of Serial patents, issued between 1908 and the mid-1960's are currently being added to this web site. Due to organization of documents in the GLO collection, this web site does not currently contain every Federal title record issued for the listed states.

3. Rich, I ran into the same problem with my Winner's. I know they got land patents, but the only thing that kept coming up for me was Preble County. I'm not certain, of course, but I don't believe they ever owned land there. Doesn't make sense to me because Warren became a county in 1803, but these transactions happened in the 1820's. Life is a mystery! Don Thomas dlthomas@terragon.com

3. I have used the GLO Records link you have mentioned below with success elsewhere. But I cannot pull up any results from Warren Co. OH for any surname. I don't think I am doing anything wrong. Have you or others been able to get Warren Co. Land Patents? Ohio surnames: Johnson / Johnston Crain Sawyer McCord Gregg Aughe Brown Ward Todd Gillespie Sturgeon Would enjoy hearing from those with connections to these lines. Johnson, Crain, Sawyer and McCord being my major lines. Many of the above families came to Warren Co. from Dauphin Co. PA around 1800. 2. Rich, I could not find my township map for Warren County, however, once you have learned which township 2 N is then I can tell you where your sections are. The Ohio Land Records are on line at this link: BLM - ES, GLO Records - Search Land Patents . Just follow the instructions and if you have problems with the spelling of the surname use a wild card and the first letter and it will give you everyone with i.e. surname beginning with L. You will be able to make a copy of the original sale of the land by the government. I thought the patents were in the Columbus, Ohio Historical Library. Darlene

3. Also there is the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library in downtown Cincinnati. It is one of the best genealogy libraries in the world and has a great deal on the surrounding areas, but also a complete set of the Federal census for all years, including the soundexes and indexes. It has a wealth of ships passenger lists, in addition to tons of other stuff. I have been to Ft. Wayne and it is wonderful also, but if you are going to be in the Warren County area, you will want to check out the Cincinnati (Hamilton County) holdings. It is only a few blocks from either the 71 or 75 interstates. You can access the catalog online. 3. Any place with info on local history is a good site and the couple of hours I spent at the Historical Museum was time well spent. I was able to copy anything I needed there, yes. But there genealogical holdings are limited. During my previous visit to the area, I was able to spend time at the Warren Co. Genealogical Society library in Lebanon. They have excellent resources and helpful staff there. During that same visit I also had great success visiting the archives section of the county courthouse records having to do with probate, marriage records etc. My next trip will be geared towards land records which I did not have time to pursue previously. Hours for the Genie Society and the Springboro Museum are spotty so be sure to plan your visit around them. The Museum is open certain hours on Wed., Sat. and Sun. only for example. You might also want to consider time at the Allen Co. Library in Ft. Wayne, IN, which is not too far up the road. It was there that I discovered the existence of probate records and cemetery listings showing both sets of my ggg-grandparents that then led me to Warren Co. What a wonderful resource the Allen Co. Library is for researchers! Good luck! Rich Lynne Streich wrote: > > Good afternoon, Mr. Lowe: > > I am planning a trip to the Warren County area in the very near future > (next week), too. Would you, or some of our other knowledgeable listers, be able to give me some hints as to what is available at Springboro Historical Museum? It sounds like you are not able to make copies of their holdings. Am I correct in this regard? Is it a good place to 'get hints' of what might be available elsewhere, like in the case of the patents you're looking for? Any recommendations or advice you can offer will be sincerely appreciated. 1. Township and Section Help
2. Rich Lowe
3. While visiting the Springboro Historical Museum on Saturday I found a collection of papers called U.S. Patents, Town 2E Range 5N that included listings for three of may family names. All three, Samuel Gregg SW 1/4, James Johnson NW 1/4 and John Aughe SE 1/4 were shown as receiving patents in Section 8, Twp 2E, Range 5N. James Johnson also had NE 1/4 in Sec. 14. I have looked for a township map on the Warren Co. GenConnect site and have not found one. Could someone help me pinpoint the location of this Sec. 8? I have a current Warren Co. map but the borders of Sec. 8 and 14, moreso, aren't clear to me. Also, are the actual land patent records available at the county courthouse? These were for 1809 to 1812.
