    3. There is a biographical sketch about Joshua Cox appearing on page 973 of Beers 1882 History of Warren County Ohio. It indicates that Joshua was born in New Jersey in 1800 to William and Margaret Cox. He came to Deerfield Twp with his mother and siblings in 1810 and was still living here at the time the biography was written in 1882. He had 4 children by his first wife, Jane Ayres with one living [Lydia] in 1882 He had 1 son [Lee R.] by his second wife, Sarah Demick. Harrison County is probaly close to 200 miles away from Warren County. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: JMAXWELL <MAXWELLJL@appstate.edu> To: <OHWARREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 23, 2001 11:43 AM Subject: Cox surname > Hi > > I'm trying to track down William Cox m. 3. On page 1049 of "The History of Warren County" by W. H. Beers & Company, Chicago, IL, 1882 has the following: WILLIAM VANDOREN, farmer; P. O. Clarksville; was born in Somerset Co., N. J., Feb 12, 1800; his parents, John and Mary (Todd) Vandoren, were also New Jersey people; his father held an official rank in the late war with Great Britain. Mr. Vandoren came with his parents to Cincinnati, in 1814, and to this township in 1817, where they were early pioneers. At an early age, our subject learned the carpenter and joiner's trade, with his father, and followed that business for about thirty-five years. He was married Oct. 16, 1824, to Miss Athalina Ludington, a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Ludington, born in Connecticut, Sept. 8, 1804; thirteen children were the fruits of this union; of these, eleven are living, viz., Sarah A., wife of Dr. F. M. Sanderson; Alfred, Barkley, Elizabeth, wife of George Shoemaker; Susanna, wife of Alexander M. Penquite; Martha, wife of Ephraim Castello; Esther, George, Farinda, wife of William Hadley; Nathan and Amos D.; John and Lucinda are deceased. Mrs. Vandoren departed this life Aug. 11, 1881. Mr. V. is a member of the M. E. Church. Politically, he is Republican. He served as Treasurer of Washington Township for twenty years, and, finally, by the bankruptcy of two banks, he lost $5,000; he owns 72 acres of land on the Lebanon and Wilmington pike. 1. Friedmann Lautersung Electric
    2. M.A. Dyas
    3. Does this name sound familiar to anyone? I have my gg grandfather's razor. On the blade itself, is a manufacturer's name Friedmann Lautersung....Electric. The razor has a leather case, with the wording "Blue Steel Warrented...Price $3.00" printed by the manufacturer. My gg grandfather was Maximo E. Emley, possibly born around 1860, but not sure. He married (1) Prudence Lee, (2) Mary C. He lived in Franklin Twp., Warren Co. OH. His son Wilbur John Emley was born in 1877; Maximo got divorced in 1879; Maximo's will is probated 1918. I do not know when he died or where he is buried, nor what the "E" in his middle name stands for. Family lore says he was once the Mayor of Sharonville, Ohio (time frame unknown.) I am wondering why a non-electric razor would have the word "Electric" printed on it. Could it possibly be an advertising item for an actual electric company? I'm hoping the origin/age/history of the razor may give me a clue about Maximo. I don't know what he did for a living, but maybe he worked for an electric company if there was such a company named Friedmann Lautersung. Maximo carved his name on the leather case for the razor. I guess any clue is worth pursuing! My second question: Maximo's 2nd wife was listed as "Mary C." in his will (mentioned above.) How would I go about finding out who she is? Are there legal records from the execution of a will/estate? Thanks, Peggy Dyas Virginia Beach Allein@webtv.net

    2. Steve Peterson
    3. Hi listmembers, I am looking for information on William Coats & Sarah Jane (LEMON) SMITH. They were born in NJ abt 1803 and were in Warren Co, Ohio by 1838. Could I get a lookup for information on William & Sarah on the 1840 & 1850 census if there is one? They had at least 3 children born in Ohio. Charles S. SMITH b 1838, William Francis SMITH b 1840, and Emily SMITH b 1842. Their Son John B was b in NJ in 1833. I was wondering if they were living near other Smiths or maybe Coats families that may lead to information about their marriage or parents. Up until now all searches in NJ and PA have yielded nothing. William Francis SMITH was born in New Caledonia, Warren CO, OH which I understand no longer exists. Was there a newspaper in that part of the country in 1840? Any thing you could help me with would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Steve Peterson ptrsn@home.com

    1. MARTS/SNOOK & others
    2. I research the John (3) SNOOK, Jr., family of Warren Co., who descended from William (1) SNOOK of Hunterdon Co., NJ. I recently received information on the RW Pension Application of William MARTS who became a part of this Snook family when his widowed mother Elizabeth (-) MARTS married John (2) SNOOK, Sr., by NJ license, 14 Dec 1779. The record contains a number of names that may be of interest to those whose Warren and/or Butler Co., OH ancestors originated in NJ, especially Hunterdon Co. RW Pension Application (S-2724) Warren Co., OH, 3 Oct 1832 William MARTS of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., OH, aged 68 years, 10 months, entered the service in (Amwall) (sic) Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ in May 1780, being about 16 years old, under Capt. Philip SNOOK; he served 18 days. He re-entered the service about 20 Jun 1780, under Ensign Peter ROCKAFELLOW. Abner HICKSON, Peter SNOOK, William HERDER, John RUDMAN, John BORDINE/BODINE, Samuel CORWIN, Amos SUTTON, Samuel DANBURY and William BELL/BULL, a foreigner, were all engaged at the same time. In Jan., 1781, he enlisted in Capt. David SMALLEY's company. In Sep., 1780, he was under Capt. RANDOLPH of the VA Line. Abner HICKSON hired a substitute named George REED. He was discharged 1 Jan 1781. On 15 Jul 1781, he was attached to Capt. Ralph GUILD's company, and was discharged at the end of Oct., 1781; he lost his discharge on 4 Nov 1791 at St. CLAIR's defeat where he lost everything in the world. Butler Co., OH, 15 Aug 1832 George REED is acquainted with William MARTS, served with William MARTS in the NJ militia in the Rev War; he remembers that William MARTS was under age when he was in the service; they served together under Capt. Philip REED on several occasions. He also served as a substitute for Abner HIXON in Capt. David SMALLEY's company, together with William MARTS. Warren Co., OH, 11 Sep 1832 Daniel STOUT is acquainted with William MARTS, served with him in the Rev War for 3 months in 1781 under Capt. Ralph GUILD; they were discharged together in Oct., 1781. (Revolutionary War Pension Application Abstracts, "The Cross Road of our Nation, Records & Pioneer Families" Ohio Gen. Soc., XLI: 191, #4) Briefly, more about William MARTS: His father was John Marts of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ, who wrote his will 15 Jan 1777, naming wife Elizabeth, son William (underage), daughters Lydia and Hannah, and daughter Abigail (underage). Execs: wife Elizabeth, and my friend Peter ENT. Wits: Jacob SNYDER, John CORWINE, William HILSEE. Pro. 25 Feb 1777. Inv. by Jacob SNYDER and Judiah HIXSON, 20 Feb 1777. William was born abt.1764. He apparently married Elizabeth (3) SNOOK, daughter of George (2) Snook who was the brother of John Snook, Sr. In his 1803 will, George Snook mentioned daughter Elizabeth Marts. In 1807, William witnessed a deed between John and Peter (3) SNOOK, co-heirs of their deceased father John (2) Snook (Sr.) late of Amwell. In 1811, William was administrator of the Hunterdon Co., NJ, property of John (3) SNOOK, Jr., who married Hannah COOLBACK and had migrated to Warren Co., OH, by/bef 1803, where he died intestate in 1808. William sold the NJ land to Benjamin JOHNSON in 1812, and on the same day, Johnson and his wife Elizabeth sold it back to William Marts. A year later, he sold it to Peter (3) SNOOK, brother of John Snook, Jr. Also in 1811, William was Surveyor in the division of the dec'd James STOUT's land in Hopewell Twp. William Marts was mentioned in the 1813 Hunterdon Co. will of Elizabeth (3) SNOOK, the daughter of William (2) Snook, Jr., who was the brother of George and John Snook, Sr. In 1814, William and Christopher Marts owned land adj. to Lewis CHAMBERLAIN in Amwell Twp. (Relationship of William and Christopher unknown.) By the 1830 census, William was living in Warren Co., OH. He was enumerated in the Hamilton Twp. census as William MARTZ and in his household were one male 60-70 yrs.; one female 30-40 yrs.; and one female 60-70 yrs. The will of William Marts, of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., OH, signed 10 Sep 1842, & pro. 4 Nov 1844, named executor Peter W. SNOOK. The widow was Elizabeth Marts and the heir was son-in-law James HIXSON. A notation to the will abstract states Wm. was a Col. late of Montgomery Co., IN. James HIXSON and Abigail MARTS married in Hunterdon Co., NJ, 9 Sep 1807. Peter W. SNOOK was the son of William (4) SNOOK and the grandson of John (3) SNOOK, Jr. and Hannah COOLBACK. I would be interested in learning if William MARTS had descendants who lived in Warren Co., or in any other information on the family. Thanks to Frank Mounts and Betty Snook Welliver, it is possible for descendants of Wm (1) Snook to keep these families straight...most of the time. Judy Tooman

    1. MOLLESON family
    2. Susan L. Williams
    3. MOLLESON's of Franklin Twp, Warren Co OH from abt. 1820 through 1860's. Believed migrated from NJ (Piscataway a possibility). All of this surname are related, although spelling may be Mollison/Mallison/with e's sometimes added. Ancestry file at LDS has extensive data, but there are obvious inaccuracies & redundant entries. It also includes maternal lines of the MOLLESONs, but again, MUST be checked throughly before accepting any of it. Their ancestry is fairly certain to go back to a Celtic name, but appear in Aberdeen Scotland until they came to America before 1800. I have transcribed copies of Aberdeen records where they were mentioned in records in 1124, and it continued thru 1600's. The family had a strong tradition of naming one son, "Gilbert", which continued down to a Gilbert MOLLESON appearing in Warren Co records ca 1820. Have some Census records 1850/60 but need earlier information and cssp with related familiy descendants. This line totally disappears from County with the death/probate of John D. (Daniel ?) MOLLESON in Apr 1865. John D. married Lucy CHAMBERLAIN (when & where ?) and she d. in Warren Co. (bef 1850 Census, prob 1845-1850). Earliest child, Daniel was b. abt 1828 in OH. John is single in 1850 Census, with children at home, youngest is Lucy Eliza b. abt 1845. He m2) Eliza Jane (also shown as Eliza C.) DUBOIS Oct 1850. It is unknown if Eliza was previously married, but there was no issue from m2. She survived him. Sarah & siblings married into: BAIRD, Mary Jane; TENERICK, --; LIPPINCOTT, Jacob; CHAMBERLAIN, Joseph H, and possibly MacFARLAND, Hattie. On 27 Feb 1854, John D. Molleson, father of Mary MOLLERSON, gave consent for her marriage to Thomas STOUT. If this is the Mary, age 13 in 1850 Census, it makes her abt 16/17 at time of consent given. However, it is proven that this Mary MOLLESON married Joseph H. Chamberlain in 1863 and moved to Johnson Co. KS. I descend from Sarah S. MOLLESON, daughter of John D & Lucy (Chamberlain). She m. John Burdges LIPPINCOTT on 6 Sept 1848, Warren Co. OH. So..after 25 yrs + of searching, I have fragments to link together. Any help appreciated. Susan Bidwell Williams slw02@sprynet.com
