For those who may not receive this newsletter, I had to share the following unbelievable article. Imagine trying to track the Scott family! The tidbit of humor is great, too. Karen -----Original Message----- From: RootsWeb Review [SMTP:RootsWeb-Review-request@rootsweb.com] Sent: February 21, 2001 6:40 PM To: RootsWeb-Review-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Missing Links, Vol. 6, No. 8 ------------------------ HUMOR. MARRIED 10 YEARS WITH 19 CHILDREN by Chandra Martin lunar@ipa.net >From the ILLINOIS-IOWA-MISSOURI SEARCHER, Vol. 16 #1 Issue 53, page 25 (originally from THE NEWS-REPUBLICAN, Farmington, Iowa, April 6, 1911, but the dateline is Muskogee, Oklahoma). Married 10 Years, Have 19 Children Muskogee, OK -- Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott of Highland, Kansas, are seeking a home in this state with plenty of land. They will need it, for although they have been married not quite ten years, they are the parents of nineteen children, all boys, and thirteen of them living. They hold the record for triplets, having five sets to their credit, and two sets of twins. All of her thirteen boys are under five years. Recently the Scotts, deciding that they must find more land, went to Alberta, Canada. They were not satisfied there and returned. On the return trip Mrs. Scott and her thirteen children all rode on one first-class ticket. At Omaha the conductor made a vigorous protest. "Madam, you cannot carry a whole Sunday School along with you on that one ticket," he said, "and you need not tell me those are all yours. You will have to pay for some of them." "The rules of this railroad provide that a child under five years may ride free, when accompanied by its parent with a first-class ticket, don't they?" retorted Mrs. Scott. "They do, but you will have to show me." Mrs. Scott dug down into her valise and brought out the Family Bible in which was recorded the names and ages of each of the children. The conductor had to give in. The mother and children occupied five double seats in the homeseekers' car and paid for only one. The names and ages of the children are: Ashbell, Archer and Austin, triplets 4 1/2 years old; Arthur and Arnold, twins, 3 1/2; Allan, Almon and Albin, triplets, 2 1/2; Albert, Albion and Adolph, triplets, 18 months; Abel and Abner, twins, 6 months. Mrs. Scott is 30 years old and her husband is only a year her senior. The mother and children are now in Highland [Doniphan County] Kansas, while the father is in Oklahoma seeking a location. * * * * * PERMISSION TO REPRINT articles from MISSING LINKS is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, PROVIDED: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Written by [author's name, e-mail address, and URL, if given]. From "Reminiscences Early Shelby and Decatur Counties" by J.R. French, Published in Shelby Republican (Shelbyville, Indiana) beginning Jan. 4, 1907, reprinted in The Bulletin, publication of Decatur Co. Indiana Historical Society, 1964. copied from file in Shelby Co. Library. This was written by Joseph Roberson French b: 27 August, 1825. His parents were Daniel French and Amy Tingle. My father, Daniel FRENCH, was born in New Jersey, on August 9, 1791 and when two years old his parents moved to Pennsylvania, When [] age he came to Lebanon, Ohio. He there became acquainted with my mother, who was born there in 1798, and she and my father were married and settled there. In 1820 father and my grandfather TINGLE came to Shelby Co., Indiana, and father bought 160 acres east of Middletown.[] Grandfather TINGLE bought a half section where Waldron now stands and gave it to his son JOHN TINGLE. He bought three eighties south of Middletown and gave it to his oldest daughter, Mrs SOLOMAN BEEDLE. He bought a half section []Conn's Creek and gave the north half to his daughter, Acenath (?)od and the south half to his youngest daughter Catharine BOYD. After father was here in 1820 Job Creek bought eighty acres adjoining father on the south. When father came out in 1821 he brought William HAYMOND with him and they lived with Creek until they could build a cabin. In the fall of 1822 he went back and brought his wife and two year old daughter back by Ox cart. Article mention that is 1826-27 the neighbors were John Hendricks, Henry Moore, Fountains, Beedles, Wicoffs, Thomas Haymond, Elijah Haymond, Owen Haymond, Samuel Monroe, James Finley, Henry Ormsby, John Haymond, Aaron Van Pelt, Enoch Tindall, Samuel Snider, Sorry this is so long, I thought someone might be interested in it. While searching the TINGLE lines, has anyone run across a LIPPINCOTT or a MOLLISON marriage in the 1850-1890 era? Susan Bidwell Williams slw02@sprynet.com
Elizabeth Reeder's father, David Reeder, was a brother of my husband's ancestor Joseph Reeder IV, from whom Wilbur and Orville Wright also are descended. David and Joseph IV's parents were Joseph III and Susan GANO Reeder. Susan's brother, Rev. John Gano, was the chaplain who baptized George Washington. I assume you know the Tingle family's connection to the Harmon family. We have fairly extensive information about the Reeder family on paper, but not yet entered into our genealogy computer file. Will be happy to share. --Mary Ann Mulford davidshaw@webtv.net wrote: > I am descended from Jedediah Tingle and his wife Elizabeth Reeder, > through their son Samuel Parker Tingle. I stumbled upon the following from the Western Star, October 10, 1901, page 5 [Ohio Historical Society microfilm #19265] ---------------------------------------------- Clayton Ludlum of Marhal, Ill., John Simonton, of Dayton, Charles Ludlum, of Morrow, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Trovillo were entertained at the home of J. H. Ludlum and family Monday. ---------------------------------------------- There was Charles A Ludlum [1855-1924] who was the son of Maria Simonton and Richard Ludlum that lived and died in Morrow. They are all buried in the Ludlum family plot in the Morrow cemetery along with a sister, Alice Ludlum. Anybody know how the others may be related??? I have quite a bit of info on a John Simonton of Dayton, Ohio whose's family plot is very close to the Ludlum plot but I don't know who the parents of John Simonton are. I've appended that info to the end of this message. Any information would be appreciated. The City of Warren, Ohio, should be inTrumbull County.
I am descended from Thomas and Eve Smith who were both born in NY. They came to Warren County ca 1819, with five of their children and the other four children were born in OH. Children are: Maria Ann (William Lundy); Henry (Hannah Crosson, 2. Susan M. Daily; 3rd. Sarah Foryce); William (Hannah Scoonover); Margaret (John Hampton); John (1st Nancy Hogan, 2nd Lydia Elmar Gillis) and all these children were born in New York; Rachel (John M. Whitacre); Deborah (Henry Kliperd); Thomas (Elizabeth Stout ???) and Ruth who was born 13 Jun 1832 and died 24 Dec 1834. These last four were born in Ohio. Thomas and Eve Smith are buried in Edwardsville Cemetery as are some of their children. John Smith and several of his family are also buried there as is Henry's first wife Hannah Crosson Smith (my 3rd great-grandparents); Maria and Margaret and members of their families are also buried in Edwardsville. Deborah is buried in Pleasant Cemetery. Henry and his second wife moved to Jay County, IN and it is not known if Rachel and her family moved to Indiana. I don't know where William and Thomas moved to after the 1860 census. Henry left Ohio ca 1864 and moved to Jay County, IN. The Smith Family were members of the Quaker faith and can be found in the Quaker Records. They later split and became Hicksites (?). Henry and his second wife are buried in the Hillside Cemetery (Old Quaker Cemetery) in Pennville, Jay County, IN. If anyone has Smiths who came from New York I would be interested in knowing what county they came from. I have not done any New York research todate, but will in the future. Darlene
Thank you to all who responded about dates for records. I had a few pages xeroxed from the Handy Book-must have looked at wrong state-in a hurry. Now, does anyone know if there is a book of marriage records, transcribed, including index for both brides and grooms? I have been trying to work with their microfilm of the original book but it is awful. Some people in index don't seem to be included in actual record, or maybe they didn't film it all. No brides index, etc. The index portion doesn't give marriage date, so is no help unless you can locate the couple further back. Thanks. The records from that point on are usually more complete, giving you much more information. Genealogy Society), "the Probate Court Archives has marriage records [1803 to present], records of wills and estates [1800 to present], and birth and death records [1867 thru 1908]." The Health Dept. @ 416 S. East St. has birth and death records from 1909. Last time I was down in Warren county, these public entities related to genealogy were kind of scattered around, as probate court archives is evidently going to move into the new courthouse on Justice Dr., whenever construction is completed. (I don't know when that is; shouldn't be too long, though.) And last time I was down (the year before last), Probate Court archives was temporarily housed in the basement of one of the public administration buildings on Justice Drive. There is also a city or town of Warren, up in northeastern Ohio. It's a fairly good-sized city in the Youngstown or Akron area (I'm not too familiar with that part of the state). Sorry, I don't know which county it might be in and don't have a map on hand at the moment. If the obit simply lists "Place of Birth, Warren OH", I would take it to mean the town. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cyndi Brown" <blucynmcq@yahoo.com> To: <OHWARREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 09, 2001 12:12 AM Subject: if this posts twice... > please bear with me ~ it hadn't appeared yet on the > list so I thought perhaps I had to subscribe first in > order for my mail to post. > So, for the 2nd time, here's the stupid question of > the day ~ > If someone's obit says they were born in Warren, OH > in 1852, would that be Warren county?? > If it did post twice then that's your second stupid > question for the day, huh? :) thanks!!
