If anyone out there has an 1850 census CD of Warren Co. or access to microfilm, I would be grateful for a lookup. On page 882 are listing the following families according to the index. Alexander J. Gregg Alexander Johnson W. H. Johnson Joseph A. McCord There appear to be neighbors and I think all are likely of my line. In the meantime, if anyone has need of a lookup in Van Buren Co. Iowa, I'll return the favor. Rich

I have an original School Group Photo that I'm fairly sure was taken pre 1910 (but, maybe it's a little later). The family that had the picture said, "It belonged to mom & it has to be Middletown, Ohio". ... It can be viewed at http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4292805427. Click on the opening photo to see the enlarged view. Please add any comments below it, to help identify people or date if you can. The photo will forever be there & you can also print it (choose 8 x 10) from the "Home Printing" area (rotate it first from the site). ... I want to donate the original to a historical area. Does anyone have contact information for me to to this? ... Donna

Mert Marley wrote: Hi, I'm unfamiliar with Ft Ancient, exactly where might I find it in Warren County? Ft Ancient is located on the Little Miami River on highway State Route 350, off of Interstate 71. Not far from Lebanon, Morrow and South Lebanon in Warren county. It is now a popular spot for canoe trips on the river. It is one of the Ohio sites of the prehistoric Indian Mounds and the Native America Museum located here is worth checking out. There are hiking trails too. "Life is what happens while your making other plans"

Caveat Submitters & Searchers: As we are ALL learning.....there are many places out on the net that take our research and post it as their own. This includes Commercial and Personal sites. If you look at any of the Commercial sites, they all have a place to "send your Gedcom files". As of this date, I cannot find one of them that does not have a great deal to gain by getting their hands on a Gedcom submission. Even our old stand-by, Rootsweb (compiled by volunteers, Genealogical Societies, etc. over the past few years) is now owned by Ancestry.com. Does that mean that all the data once posted to Rootsweb sites is now their property? It seems that we are all at risk, from all of the Commercial groups. Data to an individual is also at risk. I had one large batch of data end up on a Personal site, with nothing to indicate MY name as submitter, or MY sources (which were all cited in the body of the data). So, lesson learned, I now have a personal policy: I hate to "hide my work in a box"...but until I am very sure of the future USE of my data, anything I post to any place is screened, with only the bare-bones given. Nothing gets posted to a Public site, other than QUERIES or a notice that I HAVE DATA to share. People I correspond with understand that WE will work on a line, and make sure it is right (& documented) before releasing data - to a site that we agree meets the ethical standards of Genealogy. We share - but not blindly trust the rest of the world. If someone cannot contact me personally, (my email addy is always at the bottom of the post) I prefer to pass on the opportunity to work with them. This also applies to any person putting together a "Family History of XXXX" in any format. If they accept submissions, but require no documentation, do not list the submitter-contact and cannot/will not publish changes once in print, they can publish without my input. A lot of these Home pages are being put together as ego-sites, and the people are too inexperienced (or lack ethics) when it comes to citing sources, showing submitters, etc.. They present themselves as the official place for a certain surname, and that the work is their own research. This is (my own term) "Junk Genealogy". It hits the net and becomes permanent, harder to work through than any of the old books of 100 years ago. If anyone thinks the LDS' Ancestry File site contains error-filled data, and is next to impossible to get corrected, they can add the CD's and Home Pages to the list of problem areas. Anyone who sends their GEDCOM to a Commercial site is literally, GIVING it away. Once you hit the 'send' button, it becomes THEIR property to use as they want. The Commercial sites have become the Halbards of the electronic age. They compile and sell. That is how they make money. Period. Just be careful, and consider WHAT you are doing for ( and to) the future Genealogists. Ask yourself: "Is this site/person research-driven?" If not, the potential for abuse of YOUR data is there. Anyone wanting to discuss this with me, please contact me directly. Permission to send to other sites is granted. Susan Bidwell Williams slw02@sprynet.com
Bill, et al, We are faced with an awkward situation here. Please contribute to finding a favorable reaction rather than criticize those who are uncomfortable with it. We are probably not "big" enough to battle those who would "steal" our information, package it and sell it to others. I have posted one GEDCOM online and that was on RootsWeb's WorldConnect project. I have no idea if any of my work has been "stolen". I have been contacted by several persons who have "discovered" my posting and have then contacted me directly to continue with information exchange. I selected the option that RootsWeb offered to deny anyone the option of downloading my entire GEDCOM, with the hopes that interested researchers would instead contact me directly. So far, I have been pleased with the results of my effort and how RootsWeb has treated my information. I am not aware that GenForum has violated the confidentiality of a researcher's information posted on any of their media. It is, rather that groups like Genealgy.com/FTM and now even LDS has accumulated compilations and has packaged and offered them for sale. My reaction can only be voiced as a displeasure that they would commercialize what I have so long sought, and neither pay me for my work, or share their collections with me without charge in exchange. It is definitely a Win-Lose situation. They win, you and I lose. Oh, I can agree that their produced accumulations of the work of others might actually have some value to John Q. Public, but it can exist as only CLUES to what I am searching for if the data does not contain detailed source identification (at best) or at least the identification of the compiler so that he/she can be contacted for follow up. I want the names of my families posted wherever a kinsman can find them. There is not enough time for me to find all of them by myself! I consider it an inexpensive advertisement to post basic information, and anxiously await for someone to contact me once they have found it, so that we can commence some serious information swappin'. I do know persons who employ the "box theory", and believe me, they ARE remembered, but definitely not respected. A dedicated researcher can determine when and where the information became "lost" and he will definitely grumble a bit about the person who caused it to be "lost" to future generations! Donna: In early Hamilton County, OH newspapers, Joseph Parks is mentioned as living on Dicks Creek. Someone from Warren Co. may answer your question differently and you should trust them! But I believe this was a community of settlers, not an organized town. I am not a descendant of Joseph Parks but because his activities in (then) Hamilton Co., OH, occurred during the same period of time as those in my Park family, sometimes found as Parks, I did a bit of research on him. I have no knowledge of the Joseph Parks you are researching prior to his appearance in Ohio. What information do you have or what are you looking for specifically? Maybe I can help. Hi Sue: You will find the word Bethel for towns, Cemeterys and churches in many counties and most states. It is a religious name. No the Old Bethel Cemetery has no connection with the town Bethel in Clermont. They also have an Old Bethel Church and cemetery near Bantam on Elklick . It also has no connection to the town. It was named before the town Bethel in Clermont got its name in the early 1800's to destinguish it from the town, Old was added to the name Bethel Church and Cemetery. This Old Bethel Church & Cemetery is in the East Fork State Park has been declared a historic place. Do you know if there is a cemetery book for the burials in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Warren Co., or do you know where such information can be found? I believe you are missing the point. First of all, I merely submitted what someone else had said--as they asked. I certainly don't object to sharing and have done so with MANY other researchers. However, these companies should not be allowed to just pkg. and sell what other people have sent in. They may not even give credit to the researchers. In some cases people are submitting to so-called secure web sites where a password is given to other family members and friends. Otherwise supposedly no one can access it--and some of these have also ended up on CD's for sale. I've also had experiences, as many others perhaps have--where my shared work then ends up on another individual's web site, and yet no credit is given to the person who did all the work. In one case, it simply states "work researched and compiled by so-and-so" (the owner of the site). Sources should be included. Present day Bethel OH, Clermont county Oh, on highway 125 is quite a ways south (over 50 miles) of the Ft Ancient area. I dont know if there was a connection to the old cemetery, but there are many Warren county names in the Bethel area. This would need to be researched or answered by someone with more knowledge than myself.
I was wondering is it the "Old Bethel Cemetery" any connection to Bethel, OH? I have an old picture that I found among my grandparents things of a farm house, on the back it says" My Home in Bethel, OH. I don't recognize it and have always been curious as to whom it belonged. Diana
There is a cemetery high above the river on the other side of the old Ft Ancient. It is called Old Bethel, and has many early burials. Perhaps this is the one you folks are needing to check records in.
