>From the McArthur Democrat-Enquirer, January 3, 1919 (Title omitted) Mrs. Eugene STUCK and son Clarence returned last week from a visit with her sister, Mrs. John HESS at Kalamazoo, Michigan. They also visited her brother, Frank COZAD and other relatives at Springfield, Ohio. C. O. HARDEN of O'Neil, Nebraska, writes us that they have been having real winter there, for the past two weeks. It has been about 4 degrees below zero with a skim of snow. A few miles west of them the snow is ten inches deep. Among the flu victims near Vinton Chapel during the past week, are members of the following families: Elmer SIMS, Albert PEARSE and Dan DIXON. William TOWNSEND, who has been working at Albert PEARSE's has also had it but all are recovering. Mr. and Mrs. O. F. PILCHER entertained the following at a dinner party last Thursday evening: Mr. and Mrs. S. J. BENNER and daughters Lucile and Dorothy; Mr. and Mrs. T. G. KELLY and daughter Genevieve. Of the home folks Misses Lois and Jeanette and James and George PILCHER were present. Mr. F. M. BRAKE of McArthur street, Chillicothe, writes us in renewing his subscription, that he formerly lived in Zaleski, and that he still loves to hear from old Vinton County friends. The friendship is mutual we are sure. We are not likely to forget that brother BRAKE was once one of ourselves, and we still love to claim him as our own. There was a very enjoyable eat at Orland on New Years day: The PAYNEs, Lucius, Casius, and Miss Hattie PAYNE, and Mrs. Etta MURPHY entertained the following at dinner: Mrs. Nelle CHERRY and son Bayard, Mr. and Mrs. George CHERRY and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Lucius LEE; Mr. and Mrs. Ervin FREESE and child; and Mrs. Edgar ERVIN. F. BECKLEY. Mr. Al. F. MOORE, manager of the Mohio Coal Company was made glad by the arrival of his family from Mexico, Missouri, December 29th. The family consists of Mrs. MOORE, daughter Miss Mildred, Son Mac, about 15 years old; also Earl MOORE, their married son with his wife and one child. They are occupying the Perry GORSUCH home as a residence. Mr. and Mrs. MOORE and family prove to be very welcome additions to our community. (part of a letter) Week ago yesterday four of us boys were sent to Luxemburg City, to handle a big telephone exchange; only stayed there one day. I have been in a part of England, France, Belgium and Luxemburg and now in the Army of Occupation. This sure is a pretty country and we sure have been paid for our trip. Three of us were over in Luxemburg City yesterday afternoon on a little detail. We are located about twelve miles north-east of Luxemburg City and about twenty miles from the German border. Luxemburg City, is a fine city and they sure have some classy girls. We four boys were the first Americans in the city and they went wild over us. One of the bunch could speak German and we found several who could speak English. In five minutes time after we stopped the automobile one could not get within twenty five feet of the car. They would touch our clothes, shake hands with us and some of the girls asked us to home with them; only sorry that I didn't have more time. Mom, there are all kinds of rumors floating around here and they all sound good to us. We hear that we are to parade in Washington the 24th of December and I only hope it is true. Had two of my teeth filled the other day, the first time for a dentist to work on me. Look if you don't hear regular from me. Remember I am marching and no time to write, hope to beat this letter home or follow it close. Love from Pv. F. M. DUFFY Co. B, 308 F. S. Bn., American E. F., A.P.O. 754 via New York
