Can someone explain "old- fashioned belling"? Does anyone know who Nettie Bobblet's parents were? Thanks.
Here're a couple of links which describe the belling or (shivaree): http://www.calliopepress.com/maude/excerpt.html http://www.countryrag.org/cr71219.html I can confirm that bellings were still practiced in Vinton County in the 1960s... I can remember participating in the belling that followed Dale Thomson's wedding as a small boy in the early 1960s. There were firecrackers, people banging on pots and pans, along with refreshments...
