McArthur Democrat Enquirer February 28, 1940 No. 10 Resident Burned to Death When Oil Ignites Mrs. Catherine McCarty, age 82, is victim of flames. Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine McCarty 82 year old invalid Vinton County Woman who was burned to death Wednesday were held Saturday afternoon at one o'clock at Radcliff. The funeral was in charge of Vale and Martin. Mrs. McCarty met her death at the home of her son, Herman McCarty of near number ten when a can of oil which McCarty had placed on the stove to melt was ignited. Her sons and daughter in-law Mrs. Jacob McCarty and two small children managed to escape but when they attempted to take the aged woman from her bed they found her too badly burned to save and the heat was so intense that it was impossible to move the body. The three room home occupied by the McCarty's was destroyed. The house had only been built for a short time. Mrs. McCarty was born January 6, 1858 at Vinton Township in Vinton County. She married Riley McCarty in 1885 at Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Mr. McCarty died some time ago. She has spent the greater part of her life in Vinton County. She is survived by the following sons: Pete of Oreton Luther of McArthur Herman of Wellston George of Detroit John of Virginia Jacob of Dayton Elmer McCarty, grandson of the victim is now in Chillicothe Hospital suffering from injuries he received in an automobile accident near McArthur on the morning of Sunday February 11 Dan Lightfoot of Oreton was killed in the accident.
