[This article was transcribed without making changes to spelling or grammar.] Athens Messenger September 1, 1887 VINTON The Vinton Record has finally succeeded in settling the Mormon question. McKeever & Weisenberger, proprietors of the beer garden just outside of the corporate limits of McArthur, will run a free bus from their place to the town for the accommodation of their patrons. On Wednesday of last week, Edward Halfhill, of Vinton township, Vinton county, was arrested by Constable Hunter, of McArthur charged with rape on the person of Miss Dorcas Dawson, and taken to McArthur and lodged in jail. Fifteen or twenty persons, styling themselves, "The Vinton County Prohibition Convention, met at McArthur last Saturday and nominated a caunty (sic) ticket headed with the name of John S. Witherspoon, of Swan township, for Representative. Charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct have been preferred against fourteen members of the McArthur Military company while returning home from the annual encampment and a court of inquiry has been called by Capt.
