[This article was transcribed without making changes to spelling or grammar.] Athens Messenger November 24, 1887 VINTON A brakeman on the C. W. & B. road named Gideon Spears, of Chillicothe, fell from a car at Hamden, last Saturday evening, and was killed. Mr. Harrison Priest, a respected citizen of Swan township, died on Tuesday and was buried at the Bethel cemetery in that township. Vinton Purdy, aged 55, a former resident of Wilksville township, but for some time past a resident of Ewington, Ohio, was killed by being run over by the cars, at Wellston. The grand Republican victory scored by Vinton county continues a topic of gratified remark among Republicans of this section of the State. The candl? date for Representative who is a sound temperance man and a zealous local optionist, was, however, defeated by 34 plurality, a combination of the whisky men and the Prohibitionists effecting such result in favor of his Democratic opponent who is in favor of free and untrammeled whisky.
