The Ohio Democrat, August 10, 1889,from the McArthur Enquirer: An Old Canteen Mr. Frank Craig, in moving about the property of the late John Seal found an old canteen, made of wood, and like some we saw among the Confederates during the Civil War. It bears on one side this inscription cut into the head of one side apparently with a knife in the hands of a good whittler: " Fort Brook, Tampa Bay, I. Barger, Seal, East Florida, October 28, 1836, Co, A. U. S. M." On the other head are the words: " United States Marines," with an all-seeing eye cut under the first two words. Underneath are the initial letters of John Seal with a star places thus: " J. * S. It is probable the canteen was carried by Barger and afterwards by Seal, who held onto it at his discharge from the service. ~~~~~~~ Hocking County Genealogy ~~~~~~ http://www.geocities.com/lonadawn1/hocking_genealogy.htm
