Athens Messenger April 19, 1888 VINTON The Village Council, of McArthur, met on Monday evening of last week and finished up business for the year, after which the new Mayor, Councilmen, Clerk, Marshal, Treasurer and Solicitor were duly installed. The late grand jury, of Vinton county, indicted Riffe and Langam for horse stealing, and placing an obstruction on the C. H. V. & T. R'y (sic) near Swaims Station in Vinton county; Marion Cline was charged with perjury and young Shoemaker with forgery. The McArthur town Council last week repealed the local option ordinance, in reference to which action the McArthur Enquirer says: All the ordinance had amounted to, really, was to deprive McArthur of the revenue which it should have received from the saloon men to defray corporate expenses. Under it liquor was readily obtained outside of town at any time, in any quantity, by any person, and McArthur has suffered all the ?? effects of whisky selling without the compensation of whisky ?????.
