[This article was transcribed without making changes to spelling or grammar.] Athens Messenger December 8, 1887 VINTON An effort is being made to raise money to rebuild the Presbyterian church in McArthur. A little son of Mrs. Dora Holland, of McArthur, recently shot himself with a revolver in the knee. A prisoner named Bowen who lately escaped from the jail at McArthur was recaptured at Wheeling, Virginia, and brought back. A silver-gray fox was recently killed near Radcliff, Vinton county, that measured over five feet in length and was larger than a hound. The sheep barn of J. M. Foreman north of McArthur, burned on a recent night. The fire had origin from a lighted lantern which was hanging in the barn. Austin H. Huff who a year or so ago was sent from Vinton county to the Penitentiary under a four years sentence for perjury was pardoned by the Governor last Monday. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson
