    3. ************************************************************************************************************** SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper REpublican Tribune July 25, 1928 OBITUARY John Albert son of Ephraim and Jane Strausbaugh was born near Wilkesville, Ohio July 27 1863. He was married to Viola Elizabeth Weyand on November 4, 1893. To this union four children were born. Mabel Ann Wood, Martha Marie Steffen, Henry Ray Strausbaugh and Gladys May Strausbaugh all living in Wilkesville. He leaves seven grandchildren, one sister Martha McLauglin and one half brother Clarence Strausbaugh. Besides these he leaves a host of relatives, and friends. He was a lifelong member of the Wilkesville Presbyterian church having united with that church at the age of ten, March 21, 1874 by Pastor Warren Taylor. He was a charter member of the K of P Lodge of Wilkesville. He was a loving husband and indulgent father and a kind neighbor. Quiet and assuming he slipped away from those who love him on July 14, 1928. "No no! Not dead, just laid away from sight, To slumber undisturbed through one long night. Instead of many brief ones such as fall. In swift recurrence o'er us one and If thou art glad to lay thy weary head. Upon the pillow of thy nightly bed, And lose thyself in slumber, wherefore weep, When loved ones rest in nature's dreamless sleep, Since now we wake when night has passed away, In the likeness of the former day May we not hope to see them face to face ' Who in the church yard have their resting place? Believe in Master; o'er and o'er he said- "Why weepest thou? Only asleep- not dead-not dead." SOURCE: Vinton County, Ohio Newspaper Vinton Courier Republican June 6, 1910 "DEATH OF WILLIAM SHRY" William Shry, aged 70 years, died at the home of Mr and Mrs Samuel Nixon, with whom he had been making his for some time past, in Swan Township, Saturday evening June 4 ( 1910) of heart failure. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday forenoon, burial in the old cemetery here. He was born in McArthur, September 1840, and at the time of his death was the oldest citizen of this place of those born here. He was the son of Amos Shry, one of the old pioneers of this section, and had lived here or near here all of his life. His only surviving near relative is a sister Mrs Lydia Kirkendall, living in Long Beach, Calif. His wish that he be buried next to his uncle Joseph Bobo was complied with."

She was the sister of William Shry of this place. Before her death she requested that the following people o f McArthur friends of hers be invited to attend her funeral and that all their expenses be paid out of her estate: Mrs Sarah King, Mrs Delia Rankin, Mrs J.J. Shockey, Mrs Bothwell , Mr and Mrs W.H. Carson and Mr and Mrs H.H. Shively. The above parties went to Hamden on the morning train Wednesday, to attend the funeral. NOTE She was the daugher of Amos Shry and Mary Bobo

    3. SOURCE: McArthur Democratic Enquirer June 24, 1886 "Death of Amos Shry" " Amos Shry, aged about 86 years, died at his residence in this place Sunday last. He has been prominently identified with the interests of this community nearly all of his life. Honest, industrious, frugal and peaceable, he modestly flosted down the stream of time with scarcely a ripple to break its placid surface and departed from our midst in characteristic peace and quiet. His remains were buried by the side of those of his wife in the Hoffhines (Hixon) graveyard, two miles south of town, on Sunday and the funeral was largely attended by friends and relatives. Amos Shry was born in London County, Virginia, September 11,1800. His father emigrated to Ohio in the year of 1800 (?1806) and entered the land now owned by John Dowd Esq., near Vinton Station. In 1824 Amos married to Mary Bobo and by her had eleven children, seven of whom are still living. About the time of his marriage he acquired from the government now owned by Mr. E. D. Wolf, on which he lived for 36 years and raised his large family. He died at a good old age honored and respected by all who knew him."

Leaving to mourn their loss seven children Mrs Hortensia Mahaffey, Mrs Lewis Green, Mrs E.W. Davis, Mrs J.W. Bain, Vance Webb, Mrs W.F. Powell and Mrs Phil Devol." NOTE: Lucinda's maiden name was Shirkey. I do not have her parents names. She was married to James Lewis Webb. The daughter's house where she died was Lucretia Webb Green's home.

SOURCE: Newspaper OBITUARY McArthur Democratic Enquirer February 19, 1919 "William Salts, son of Thomas Salts and wife, was born September 3, 1828 and departed this life January 17, 1919, aged 90 years, 4 months and 14 days. He was married to Susan Arbaugh in the year of 1853 and to this union was eleven children were born. His wife and five children having proceded him to the Spirit Land. Those left to mourn the loss of father are: Mrs Lizzie Dixon, John Salts of Chillicothe, Mrs T.L. Miller of Clarimont, Virigina, Mrs G. W. Miller of Chillicothe, and Marion Salts of Oklahoma and Mrs. E. D. Font of Gilliespieville; twenty nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. He united with the Bible Christian Church at Pine Grove about thirty years ago and lived a humble consistent Christian life until God called him higher. During his last sickness he never murmured or complained, but bore all his suffering with great patience, and told his loved ones that he was ready to go. He was a kind husband and loving father and respected by all who knew him. For he made friends with all whom he chanced to meet. "Then be content dear heart God plans like lillies pure and white unfold; And if through patient toil we reach that land Where tired feet with sandals loosed may rest, Where we shall clearly see and understand. SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper Vinton County Republican July 13, 1905 IN MEMORIAM Thomas Salts Thomas Salts a respected citizen of Richland Township, died at his home in Richland Furnace, last Saturday, July 8, from paralysis and heart disease, aged 57 years. The deceased was a brother of former Probate Judge Andrew W. Salts who now resides in Columbus and Cahrles Salts, who lives near town. He was a member of the Christian Church, a kindhearted, honorable man, highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He leaves a wife who has the sympathy of all in her bereavement. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Hamden at 1 o'clock pm conducted by Rev J. T. Bridwell. Burial in Hamden Cemetery, undertaker L.W. Thorp having charge of the funeral arrangements. ******************************* Thomas Salts was born in Dundas, Vinton County, Ohio on April 4th, 1849. He died at his home in Richland Township, July 8th, 1905 at the age of 57 years 3 months and 4 days. Mr Salts was united in marriage to Henretta W. McKibben March 4th, 1869. He obeyed the gospel under the preaching of Noah J Wright in April 1888, and united with the Christian church at Union. He was made a deacon of this congregation shortly after he became a member and served it faithfully until he was called to his reward. On the Lord's Day two weeks before his death he was in his accustomed place and performed the duties of his office as had been his practice for more than seventeen years. He lived an upright life and the universal testimony of his neigbors was that he followed the teachings of the Divine Master. His disposition was always cheerful and kind and he was always ready to help those about him to the full limit of his power. His intimate associates remember with great satisfaction his pleasant and happy manner and tell many incidents showing his ability to make those about him happy as h e was himself. While he was well and favored known as a citizen he was modest and unassuming, never pushing himself forward nor seeking distinction in any way. His many friends were drawn to him by those noble qualities of mind and heart that marked him as a true man. His devotion to his wife was one of the beautiful features of his well spent life. It was his delight to do everything within his power to make her happy. To his adopted daughter he was an affectionate parent. He was a good neighbor, a faithful Christian and one of the best citizens in the country. He leaves to mourn his departure his faithful wife, their foster daugher, Mrs Frank L Jarvis and family, and two brothers George Salts of McArthu and ex Judge A. W. Salts of Columbus, Ohio. The funeral was held at Hamden Monday, July 10,th at 12 pm the funeral discourse being delivered by John T Bridwell, of McArthur, before and immense concourse from all parts of the county. Those who attended the funeral of Thomas Salts at Hamden from Monday, from a distance Judge and Mrs A. W. Salts and daugher and H. M. Traphagen of Columbus, J.B. McKibben, Mrs James Cosgrove, brother and sister of Mrs. Salts and Honorable M.S. Cox of Pittsburgh, Pa. and R.F. Trapahagen of London, Ohio." He was born May 5, 1805, and was 90 years, 1 month, and 21 days old at his death. He came with his parents to this country at the age of eleven years and has lived in the same vicinity ever since. He was twice married, and both wives preceeded him in death. He leaves eight children to mourn his death - three by the first marriage and five by the last. His remains were buried at the Hixon graveyard, near Dundas, on Thursday. He was an honest, good citizen and lived to a ripe old age, having and retaining the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Stephen Salts aged 64 years 3 months and 6 days. The deceased was born in Ross County, Ohio and removed to Vinton County (then Athens County) about the year 1816 where he resided until his death. He had lived the life of a Christian having been a member of the Christian Church for many years, and in his dying hours he was sustained and cheered by an unfaltering faith. His peaceful death was a fitting sequel to such a life. He was one of our most respected and useful citizens and highly respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife, three daughters, one son and many relatives and friends to mourn his death. He was buried on Saturday in the Hoffhine graveyard, two miles south of McArthur."

SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper McArthur Democrat Enquirer March 11, 1905 "Oren Salts Dead" "Oren Salts, aged about forty years, died very suddenly at the home of his mother Mrs Ivy Salts, at Dundas last Sunday night. Mr Salts had his leg amputated on February 17th and was thought to be improving nicely, when he took suddenly worse and died in a short time. His death was no doubt caused by a blood clot on the brain. His funeral will be held this (Wednsday) afternoon and the remains interred in the Hixon cemetery. Funeral director Pete Gaskill will have charge of the remains."

She leaves a husband, one son and two little girls, the younger being but two months old. Dr Taylor, who married her to Mr McNutt, conducted funeral services at the house on Saturday, and she was buried in the dress which she wore at her wedding. SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper McArthur Democratic Enquirer June 28, 1906 "Mrs Edward Robinson, after a long illness died at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs George Salts, south of twon last Sunday morning at 5 o'clock. The deceased was about 30 years old and highly respected by all who knew her. She was an excellent woman and her untimely taking away was very sad. Impressive funeral services were held by Rev H. E. Wright at the M.E. Church, Monday at 2 o'clock. Funeral director L.W. Thorp had charge of the remains. OBITUARY "Mrs Bessie Robinson was the third daughter of George and Mary J, Salts. She was born near McArthur in Vinton County on June 16,1876 and died at her father's home where she was visiting. June 24, 1906 aged 30 years and 8 days. Her girlhood and early womanhood were spent with her parents on the farm, and was therefore uneventful. When she was but a child of three years, her mother died, leaving the cares of a family on the husband and older children until he was a second time married to the woman who is his present wife. When Bessie was 18 years of age she united with the Bible Christian Church at Dundas, during the pastorate of Rev J. W Dennen. She was clearly and beautifully converted consecrating her life wholly to the Lord and his work. During her last sickness she manifested a beautiful trust in Jesus. She made the matter of her recovery an occassion for daily prayer and she was fully resigned to whatever Providence should come to her life. When she felt the apporach of death she expresed great joy in the prospect, bidding the family a long farewell as one settled out on a long journey. In the early spring of 1905 she was happily united in marriage to Mr. J. Edward Robison. For a little more than a year, they walked together bearing the load of life's burdens and sharing its joys in common, till called by her Lord and master, went away forever to be with the Lord. She was kind and gentle to the weak and delighted to help the poor and unfortunate. She leaves to mourn her untimely demise, a husband, father, second mother, three sisters, two brothers and besides a host of relatives and friends."

He was called from life to death at the Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on February 15th, 1915 at the age of 43 years 2 months and 27 days. He was married December 25th, 1890 to Miss Maggie Ward, to whom were born four children viz: Hazel, Oma, Clyde and Cecil, all of whom are living, also his wife Mrs Maggie Salts at their home in Dundas. Mr. Salts was an honest industrious and kind hearted citizen, growing up to manhood in this, his hometown. During the majority of his later years he was in the employ of the B& O SW and Hocking Valley Railroad. standing high as an efficient clerk. His life as a fraternal feature was mostly with the Clinton Lodge of K of P at Hamden, Ohio and later with the order of Heptasophs at the Dundas Hall with each order he has been a prompt, faithful and earnest worker and a cheerful brother with the brotherhoods. Mr Salts now leaves to mourn his earthly departure, a loving mother Mrs Ivy Salts, two sisters, Miss Belle Salts and Mrs Cora Winters, with two brothers Charley of Hamden and John W Salts of Nelsonville, his wife Mrs Maggie Salts and four children , Hazel, Oma, Clyde and Cecil, besides many near relatives and friends. Elder D. B. Dye conducted the funeral services at the residence, Thursday at 1:30, the orders, officiating at the Hixon Cemetery. FUNERAL OF HOMER SALTS. The funeral of Homer Salts at Dundas, Thursdy, was one of the largest ever held in that vicinity, members of the K of P order from McArthur and Hamden and the home order of the Heptasophs attending Funeral services were held at the home at Dundas, conducted by Elder D. Mr Salts was a life long resident of this community residing on his famr south west of here for many years. He was a Christian man and good citizen, charitable and kind and devoted to his family of six young children who were left to his care by the death ofhis wife and mother. Surviving are two sons Edward of Lewis Center, Ohio and Charles of McArthur and two daughters Mrs Ella Beckley and Mrs Ida Lantz who cared for him during his long illness, two daughters Mrs Bessie Robinson and Mrs Cora Jarvis preceding him in death several years ago. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church Friday at 2 pm conducted by Rev. Bates. Interment in Elk Cemetery. P. Spent his entire life in Vinton county. Died March 8th 1922, aged 76 years, 4 months and 8 days. He was married to Mary McKibben at Pittsburg, PA. about 56 years ago. To this union were born six children, two sons and four daughers, four of whom survive. The two youngest daughters and wife died several years ago. He was left with the entire care of six children all under 10 years of age. No father ever made more effort to care for his children than he did. He always exerted himself to make them comfortable and happy. His Christian life was an inspiration to them. He always had family worship with them morning and evening. He was a faithful member of the Bible Christian Church nearly all his life. He leaves as a legacy to his children a life well spent. He was the last of a family of seven. He took great delight in lending a helping hand to the poor and suffering. Hewas a good substantial citizen , and will be greatly missed, not only by his immediate family but by the community in general." Benner of Dundas, Ohio, died very suddenly Sunday afternoon at the home of her son with whom she made her home for several years. She was born near where she has lived all her life with the exception of ten years spent at Baninbridge, Ohio. She was the daughter of Stephen and Nancy Salts. She leaves one son Stephen J. Benner, one sister Margaret Brine, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Grandma as she was known by alll leaves one sister, Margaret Jane Brine, the son Stephen, three grandchildren R.C. Benner, Edgewood Md, Mrs W.T. Craig of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs Charley J. Birt of Madison, Wisconcin and three great grandchildren Stephen Jimmie and Nancy Benner of Edgewood Md. She was a member of the Church at Bethel near her home for 65 years, "And kept the Faith". The funeral was held at the home Dundas, Ohio Wednesday afternoon December 14, 1927 . Burial in Hixon Cemetery. Pall bearers were Stephen Du Pue, Stephen Brine, Charley Horaer, W.T. Craig, Howard Wortman, James Wortman. Rev Butterfield of Shawnee conducted the funeral. W.W. Tinker Funeral Home Director. SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper Vinton County Republican Newspaper dated October 13, 1904 "IN MEMORIAM" "Jeremiah Robinette" "Jeremiah Robinette was born February 10, 1824 and died at his home in McArthur October 6, 1904 aged 80 years, 7 months and 27 days. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Mace, September 15, 1848. To this union were born nine children, six of whom have preceded their father to the better world. There yet remains to mourn their loss his faithful wife, one brother Henry Robinett, one sister Mrs Elizabeth Sowder, and three children Mrs Sarah E. Pinney, Amos Robinett and William Henry Robinett. These together with his grandchildren to whom he was both father and grandfather, deeply feel their loss. To his county he rendered service during the Civil War, being a member of the 77th Regiment O.V.I. Years ago he united with the Christian Church and remained faithful until death. He was a great sufferer and prayed for relief in death, expressing his willingness to depart and be with Christ. His only thought of earth was his anxiety for the care of his wife, who was his constant companion for fifty three years. Mr. Robinett was a faithful husband, father a good citizen and neighbor. His life was quiet and unassuming, yet filled with deeds of love and kindness to all."
