    1. [OHVINTON-L] Obit Thomas Wren Brine
    2. Randy Sue McKeever
    3. SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper McArthur Democrat Enquirer January 28, 1892 "DIED" "BOBO- At his residence, near McArthur, January 22nd, 1892 Thomas Wren Bobo aged about 54 years. The deceased had been in bad health for several years and his last illness from lung fever, found a weakened system to resist it. He leaves a wife, and five children, and numerous relatives to deplore his death. The funeral took place on Sunday from the Christian Church, Rev. Angel officiating." "OBITUARY" Thomas Wren Bobo was born July 30, 1838 at McArthur, Vinton county, O. Departed this life January 22d, 1892 aged 53 years, 5 months and 23 days after an illnes of about three weeks of lung fever. He bore his affliction with a Christian spirit and was never heard to murmur or complain. He was united with the Church of Christ at Bethel Church under the Elder Harkins, and was baptised by the same in October 1889. He was married to Mary E. Jacobs, April 15, 1804 in Lima, Ohio. To this union was born two sons and three daughters, all of whom with the mother, remain to mourn their loss. As stated the deceased was born at McArthur where he has always lived except for a few years in Indiana. He served in the Union army during the rebellion, but unfortunately never obtained a pension although he had a claim pending for several years, and thus another comrade is gone, without being recognized by his government. He and the writer, were born on adjoining farms and within a few months of the same time and were much together during boyhood, and as I now look back over the past, I fail to recall one unkind word that ever passed between us. He was liked best by those that were the most intimately acquainted with him. He was a kind husband, and father, and we trust has gone to his just reward. His bereaved family has the undivided sympathy of the entire community. A Friend." _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [OHVINTON-L] query forms not working on the USGenWeb pages
    2. Charles R. Weese
    3. I am sending this message to the Gallia, Jackson, and Vinton County mailing lists to let everyone know that there is a problem somewhere that is preventing the forms on those USGenWeb county pages from working. I became aware of it earlier this week, but it has apparently been happening since about July 14 or thereabouts. I am working with Rootsweb and my ISP to see if they can find the problem. The forms worked for several years, then they all quit at the same time. The forms appear to work correctly, but I never receive the e-mail from them. At any rate, any query, surnames or address changes that were sent using those forms have apparently been lost since around July 14. Anyone who wants to send me information should send it directly to me by regular e-mail instead of using the forms. Whenever we get the problem resolved, I will let you know. ======================================== Charles R. 2. Raynita G. Fenter
    3. Thanks to all that replied to my questions about the Children's Home in McArthur. I have been doing some research on the home & the people who ran it at different times. I know that a couple by the name of Hays ran it very early. I also knew that Icy Steele had run it for a time. (My cousin Dave Wilbur was the Deputy with Sheriff Harold Steele when he was shot & killed.) I am trying to find the name of a couple who ran it later--like maybe in the 60's & 70's. I know their name was either McLaughlin or McGloughlin. That might not be the correct name but it is very close. Has anyone heard of the name? I have looked everywhere and can not find the correct name. Thanks for all the suggestions--I'll try and see if that helps. Again, thanks for your help!! 2. In the book, "A brief History of Vinton County', there is mention of the Children's home. There is no mention when it was built but it replaced an older building called the County Home built around 1873. The Infirmary was nearby on land later used as the McArthur lumber and post along route 93 at the corner of Infirmary road south of the children's home. The Infirmary was a type of rest home for the poor. In those days, Infirmary road was the main way to Zaleski before route 50 was built in it's current condition.

    1. Re: [OHVINTON-L] Childrens Home In McArthur
    2. The Children's home is now a rest home and was recently expanded. From roughly 1951 to 1959, My grandparents Icy Steele Mitchell and Fred Mitchell were Patron and Matron of the home. Upon the death of Fred in 1959, Icy was ousted in the belief that the home should be run by two people. Their daughters, ---my mother Berdena and her twin sister Beatrice, lived there during that time with them until graduaton in 1955. On occasion they have contact with some of those that lived there. It's unknown to me what happened to the records, perhaps they are in custody of the court system. Try contacting my cousin, Lisa Gilliand, Vinton County clerk of courts

    2. I believe it was called the Vinton County Children's Home. The building is still there and if I remember right it is a senior citzens home now. It is located north of McArthur on state route 93. Maybe someone else knows more about it than I.

    3. I hope someone can help me with this. There used to be a "Children's Home" outside of McArthur. What I am looking for is the name of the home, who ran the home, when it opened & when it closed (maybe in the 1970's?) Does anyone know where the records of this home might be? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

    3. McArthur Democratic Enquirer October 4, 1894 Vinton County Newspaper "Jonathon Brine was born in McArthur, November 30, 1893, died on September 29, 1894, aged 50 years, 9 months and 29 days. His first marriage was to Mary D. Haynes, March 3, 1868 to whom was born one child- now Mrs Hattie Dowd of McArthur. His Second Marriage was to Margaret J. Salts, October 15, 1876 who still survives. There are three children by this marriage; Stephen, John Garfield and Nancy E. Brine. The deceased was the son of Rev. Jonathon Brine an old citizen of McArthur and for many years the Recorder of the County. Mr Brine was a consistent member of the Christian church, an honest, good citizen, loved and respected by his friends and neighbors in life and mourned by all in death. He has made the record of a well spent life, whilst his friends mourn his departure, their sorrow is one whom they well know is now enjoying the pleasures of immortality with the beloved Master. The deceased was a faithful member of the I.O.O. F. Lodge and also of the K of P Lodge of McArthur, both of which joined in the burial rites from the Christian church, in McArthur, last Monday. Funeral sermon was by Rev Roush of Nelsonville. The attendence was the largest we ever saw in McArthur on a like occassion. Mourners weep not. It is well with Jonathan Brine." SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper October 4, 1894 Vinton Recorder "LAID TO REST" Our citizens were shocked and surprised on Saturday last, to hear of the death of Jonathon Brine an old citizen. He died about 6 o'clock after a short illness. Jonathon Brine was born in McArthur, November 30, 1843. He passed the most of his life in McArthur. He worked in the mill owned by Gilman and Gold and became an expert miller. He also worked a short time at Zaleski and in Londonderry, Ross County for a time. He was a prudent, frugal and temperate man and early acquired by his industry and saving money. He married Mary D Haines, a young woman of Londonderry,March 3, 1868, and there was born one daughter Hattie, now, Mrs Thomas Dowd. His wife died ----, 187--. He built four houses in town on Jackson and South streets. He was married again to Margaret J. Salts on October 15, 1876. She is a daughter of Stephen Salts and with three children of this marriage survives him; being two boys and one girl. Mr Brine at this time removed to near McArthur Junction, where his bride lived and owned land, livestock and other property. He accumulated more money and property and lived in peace and contentment up to the time of his death. He loved to enjoy life and always took in the prevailing amusements and was on nearly every railroad excursion. In the latter part of his life his hearing was somewhat affected. He was a large, fleshy man, weighing over two hundred pounds, and generally enjoyed good health until a short time before his death, when he complained of being indisposed. Years ago he united with the Christian church at this place. About a week before his death he received a small wound on his hand while he was roofing of his houses, in this town. Erysipelas ( cellulitis- a skin infection caused by streptococcus bacteria that enters the skin tissue through a small cut or sore) sat in and he was prostrated on his bed. He was attended by Dr. Sylvester and Swepston, but medical aid proved of no avail and he died Saturday, September 29th, at fifteen minutes before 6 o'clock. He was a member of the I.O.O. F. and K.P. , under whose auspices the funeral was conducted on Monday from the Christian Church, Rev Roush of Nelsonville preaching the sermon. His father was for twenty years Recorder of Vinton and an honored man." _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
