    3. If you are interested further in the childre of James G. Cox and his wife Nancy Graves..I have most of their obits but since they fall after 1930..please email me privately Sincerely Randy Sue SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper McArthur Democrat Enquirer August 1, 1889 Obituary "COX- James G. Cox was born July 21. 1822 and died July 18, 1889, aged 67 years, 22 months and 22 days. The subject of this brief memoir was the fifth child of Thomas Cox and Sarah Bruce. He was born near Frankfort, Ross County, Ohio. His parents moved to Vinton County Ohio ( then Jackson County) when the deceased was four years old, locating near Allensville. He was married to Nancy Graves in 1852. By this happy union seven children were born, viz: Thomas S., Lewis S., Alfred S., Benson S., Oscar S., Milton S., and Mattie M., all of who survive their father except Benson S., he having died in the year 1862. (NOTE: The children's names are slightly different from the ones listed by Losiene Hoy- but since all the names have S as a middle initial that may be how the names are varied) Mr. Cox has been exclusively engaged in farming, which pursuit he has followed with a marked degree of success. By his upright dealings, his frank disposition and friendly manner he won the esteem of all his neighbors and became noted for his honesty and correct business principles. He possessed one of the grandest traits of his character - that of living peacefully with his neigbors and family. He joined the Disciple Church in 1862 and lived a faithful member and devote Christian until his demise. His life had been that of a devoted Christian whose religion was not a cloak to wear to church but formed a part of the texture of his daily life. It was largely through his efforts that the Union Church was built which is a monument to his memory. He was also noted for his regular attendence at church, never missing a meeting until his last illness. Great interest was manifested by his friends and neigbors during his protracted sickness, all hoping for his speedy recovery and all ------- iting him, and inquiring concerning his condition. His answers to their inquiries were such as to convince al that death had no terror for him, and that he was ready and willing to go. On one occassion when the writer asked him if he had any fears of death, his answer was " Oh no, I have been getting ready too long." He possessed all of the nobler traits of character. If he conceived a line of conduct to be right, there was no possible combination of circumstances that could cause him to deviate from it. His tastes were purely domestic- a kind father and husband, a good neigbor and a respectable and useful citizen. His funeral took place on Saturday July 13th, from the little church ih which he worshipped so often. Elder H. Sherman officiating. The funeral discourse showed a marked degree of deference for the deceased, the closing of which was a grand eulogy upon his life and character. After the services, the large concouse of people moved slowly to the Wycoff Cemetery, where the remains were laid to await the heavenly resurrection. The wife and children of the deceased were much attached to him and he to them, and during the long period of his sickness they did all that could be done to alleviate his suffering and restore him to health, but all to no avail. Death claimed his victim. Father is gone. The family circle is broken. His chair is vacant. Dear father is gone to be remembered with that part of the church gathered home, andto wait the crossing over the river those who are yet on this side. Rest be to thy soul and peace to thy sacred dust. Goodbye, father, but not forever. We will meet again up in the peaceful home of heaven." _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

Cox and M.S. Cox he had made his home for a number of years. He was born in Richland Township in 1859 and at an early age was a victim of the dread disease Scarlet Fever which left him speechless and destroyed his hearing. Sanford was a familiar figure in McArthur for a number of years and visted our office quite frequently, where he was always welcome. He was a kindly man of a cheerful disposition, and his quiet courteous manner and the pure christian life he lead, endeared him to all the people of the community. Surviving are four brothers L.S., T.S., Dr. O.S. and M.S., Cox, his father and mother preceeded him in death many years ago. Funeral services were held in the Christian Church Saturday at 10 am Rev R.E. Stevens officiating. Burial in Elk cemetery. P Gaskill in charge. Pall bearers were John Cole, IIber Fri, Levi Trainer, Miles Dawson, Sidney Landman and Andrew J Martindill." "IN MEMORIAM ALFRED SANFORD COX" Alfred Sanford Cox, third son of James G Cox and Nancy Graves Cox, was born in Richland Township, October 22, 1859, and died at McArthur January 15,th aged 60 years, 2 months and 23 days. His entire life has been spent in Vinton County, Ohio and since the death of his parents he has lived and made his home with his brother Dr O. S. Cox. In his infancy, he was the victim of that dread disease- scarlet fever which thus left him speechless. Though unable to speak the mother tongue coaclly he seldom made an error in the use of the English Language. He was educated in Columbus at the Institution for the education of the deaf and he always felt proud of his Alma Mater that made it possible for him to converse with his more fortunate friends and neighbors. Sanford was a pure, noble man and bore his afflictions with heroic fortitude and at all times possessed a cheery, jovial disposition. In his young manhood he united with the Christian Church at Union, near his old home in Richland township, and his daily life since then has been a living example of a splendid christian character. His recent illness was of short duration and he met the hope of the future " Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams". He leaves to mourn his death four brothers; T.S. Cox, teacher at Richland, L.L. Cox a teacher at Hawk, Dr. O.S. Cox of McArthur and M.S. Cox Superintendent of McArthur Schools. And while he lived these four brothers vied with each othre to make his life as pleasant and happy as possible. His father, mother, one brother and his only siser preceeded him to the spirit land. Without exception, he was admired and respected by his host of friends and neigbors because of his beautiful christian character. 3. Dear Vinton County Researchers As you may have noticed the series of obituary postings from me...I have asked Mr. Weeese ( our list and web master) for Vinton county if I might post obituaries for Vinton county. I had previously only posted ones from the 1800s as I did not want to infringe on copyright stuff etc...Here is his reply! "I don't care if you post some obituaries and I doubt if any newspapers would care if you post 40 year old or more obits. After all, how could you possibly be hurting the paper (many of which are out of business now)? At any rate, all possible copyrights have expired for anything before about 1930, so there is no problem before that. " So with that in mind..I have started going through my FTM file index and looking at the death date..and if I have an obit I have been posting it to the Vinton county list...I have done some A's beforehand but all pre 1900 so I will do that...Is there anyone who would be intersted in doing the same? We could help each other more..even though these death notices and obits are considered secondary sources..it gives some things a starting point. Perhaps Mr. Weese ( if he would be willing) could perhaps create a section in the Vinton county Genweb site for obituaries to be saved from the mail list for future reference..I believe our emails to the Vinton county list are archived at Rootsweb (Thank you folks!) but this would be much easier to look up.. Any thoughts? Sincerely Randy Sue Page McKeever Researching Page, McKeever, Salts, Hoffhine, Gates, Graham, Cassills, Warners and many more.. 1. [OHVINTON-L] Timothy CASSILL
    2. Randy Sue McKeever
    3. SOURCE: McArthur Democratic Enquirer Newspaper Dated October 2, 1929 "Sunday, September 15, 1929 records the passing of Timothy Cassill whose life span of three score and fifteen years were spent in the Sheldon community which was earlier known as the Union and Shiloh church communities. He was born MArch 25, 1854 on the old Old Cassill Homestead five miles northwest of Hamden and was translated to fields of light above on Sunday evening September 15, 1929 aged 75 years, 6 months and 2 days. He was one of a family of eight children, six of whom were born to Anthony Cassill and Mary Ratcliff Cassill, and two by a later marriage to Anthony Cassill and Mary Martindill Cassill, only of one which, Nettie A Cassill, survives him, Abraham an older brother having recently died in Chicago and more recently the tragic death of a younger sister Eliza Cassill Traphagan who lost her life in a railroad crossing accident at Cardington Ohio along with her daughter Minnire ahd her husband H. M. Traphagan, His passing removes from the neigborhood the last son of the rugged pioneers who settled in Richland Township many years before Vinton County was made the 87th county of our state government. Through the three quarters of a century which he lived in this community his life and character have been so clean and unsullied that his Christian influence and splendid citizenship will stand as a monument in the minds and hearts of those who knew him best and especially his children and the young folks of the community who loved, admired, and emulated his many noble and manly traits of character and his devotion to the home, the school and the church of his choice. On August 1st 1878, he united with the Disciples of Christ worshiping at Union under the ministry of Alfred Ellmore and so long as his health permitted he was not only a faithful member of the congregation but accepted the responsibility as one of the Elders of the church and was looked upon as one of the pillars of this rural congregation. One of his greatest joys of his untiring Christian service was the love for music which coupled with his native ability and the desire to promote the musical talent of the community made him the logical leader of good music in the church and Sunday school which accomplishment extended his acquaitaincees throughout the county and won for him many deserved compliments from all lovers of music. The song service of today is composed of three musical gems which appealed to his mortal ears but greater will be his joy in Heaven when the chorus of angel voices will welcome himto the throne of his Master where hosannas will be sung in honor of him who gave his life that we might live. In the biography of such a man his home life should not be overlooked. On January 13, 1876 he was married to Hannah Catherine Saedler who assumed the honor of his helpmeet for life and though weary and worn by the continuous toll and the added care of her noble husband she has borne her burden with a love and devotion that she deserves the highest commendation for her loyalty to him to whom she pledged herself to honor and obey over fifty years ago. To this sacred union were born four childrn all of whom survive their father; Thurman S. Cassill and Ewing F. Cassill all of Columbus, Mrs Anna Mae Heinlein of New Plymouth and Bryan Cassill fo Wellston, Ohio. He also leaves a sister Miss Nettie A Cassill at home on the old Cassill homestead in Richland township. In addition to these closest relatives he leaves a host of other relatives and a multitude of friends who join the family in sincere and hearfelt sympathy. His place in the community can never be filled; with an unwavering faith in his religion his place in the church must remain vacant; with his love of home and family his chair at the fireside will never be filled; with his love for music in his home, the church and Sunday School his leadership is forever gone; the latch string of his home was always out to the minister and evangelist; his life was ideal,, in that his life was devoted to his home and the service of others; his rugged faith and his devotion to duty prompted him to the performance of good deeds and to endure many hardships for the cause of his Master and the language of the apostle Paul to Timothy Cassill who could well have said the same things; " I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." Brother Cassill was also a poetry love as well as music and tucked away in his Bible , which was his daily companion was found this beautiful poem by Edgar A. Guest: Behind the Plan I reckon when the world we leave And cease to smile and cease to grieve, When each of us shall quit the strife, And drop the working tools of life, Somewhere, somehow, we'll come to find, Just what our Maker had in mind. Perhaps through clearer eyes than these, We'll read life's hidden mysteries, And learn the reason for our tears, _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [OHVINTON-L] Anthony CASSIL
    2. Randy Sue McKeever
    3. SOURCE: Obituary From McArthur Democrat Enquirer August 2, 1888 Mr Anthony Cassill has been an invalid and a greater part of the time was confined to his room. At times he seemed to rally and then grow worse. But last month was very low and it was apparent that death was not very far away and at 11 o'clock on last Friday July 20th 1888, surrounded by sorrowing family and friends, his spirit took its everlasting flight. The deceased was born July 9th 1820 and at the time of his demise was 62 years and 11 days old. Mr Cassill was married May 25th 1840 to Miss Mary Ann Radclif. To them were born six children, four of whom survive their father, two having died in infancy. Mrs Cassill died April 22, 1860. His second marriage occured December 27, 1860 to Miss Mary L Martindill , to them were born two children, one of whom survives her father. The subject of this sketch was baptized into the Disciple Church many years ago and lived a consisted member until death. He lived to see six of his children grow to maturity, and the five who survive him, with their mother are all honored members of the same church. The writer of this brief sketch often visited him during his illness and had the pleasure of conversing with him on many subjects. He was aware that the end was near and expressed himself as being ready to go. His great suffering was borne with heroic fortitude , without murmur or complaint. The wife and children did all that could be done to alleviate his suffering, both by careful attention and the employment of the best medical skill the country affords. , but all to no avail. Some weeks before his death he made all the arrangements for his funeral. The services wer held at the Union church near his home on Saturday, Elder A.J. Watt officiating. After the services at the church, the long cortege moved off to the family cemetery, known as the Cassill cemetery, where the remains were interred in the prison house of the dead. Of strong will power, he was alike firm in his friendships and dislikes but corteous to all alike, He was an exemplary husband and father, a kind neigbor and a good citizen. The popularity and esteem in which he was held throughout the community was evidenced by the hundreds of inquireis daily concerning his condition during his illness, the numerous expressions of sorrow and sympathy when his death was known, and immense concourse that followed his remains to the grave. The sorrowing ones left behind - wife and children have the sympathy of the whole community in this their sad bereavement for Mr Cassill will not only be missed by them but by his neighbors the church and the whole community. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

SOURCE: Vinton County Newspaper December 21, 1927 Republican Tribune. OBITUARY "It becomes the duty of a neighbor of more than 50 years to write this brief but incomplete tribute to the life and character of Abraham Cassill whose friendship and good will were as strong as human ties could make them. An unbroken friendship of more than half a century turns into a jewel of priceless value, a treasure money cannot buy; a cherished memory that time cannot erase; a memory that makes the hope of Heaven most dear. His birth dates back of the days of Ohio and his ancestors were among the hearty emigrants who braved the dangers of the frontier to carve out of the wilderness our beloved Ohio. He was the eldest of a family of six children born ot Anthony and Mary Ann Radcliff Cassill of Richland township, Vinton County, Ohio the date of his birth being April 6th 1850 which was only two weeks after Vinton county had been assembled and admitted as the 87th county of our state. Of his brothers and sisters he is survived by Timothy Cassill and Miss Nettie Cassill of Route 2 McArthur, Ohio and by Mrs Henry Traphagen of Columbus, Ohio. Of his immediate family he is survived by his widow Mrs Phoebe (Martindill) Cassill, three sons Dr.O.E. Cassill, Dr. M.A. Cassill and George B. Cassill of Chicago; Mrs Cressie Blake of McArthur, Ohio and Mrs Cordie Myhre of Rio Grande. Texas, Grover C. Cassill another son lost his life on October 18th, 1918 in the World War I while serving his country in the American Expeditionary Force sent to France to protect American rights and principles. Mr Cassill grew to manhood in what is more recently known as the Sheldon neighborhood about 4 miles north of Hamden and with the exception of short periods of time spent with his family in Chicago and Texas, he has lived the full period of 77years, 8 months and 4 days in this community. When but a young man he confessed his faith in Christ and became a member of the Union Christian church in which his faith never faltered in his Maker through near 50 years of his industrious life as a farmer and carpenter. On November 6, 1878 he was united to Phoebe C. Martindill in marriage and to this union were born four boys and two girls all of whom survived except for Grover C. Cassill whose life was sacrificed on the altar of his country and whose remains are buried on a beautiful hill south of town. We cannot hope to recount all the virtues of the deceased but to those of us who knew him best, we can truthfully attest to his loyalty to his friends, his home and his family; to his uniform kindness and his fair dealing with his neighbors; to his untiring industry and his absolute honesty as intergral parts of his many Christian principals. His cheerful disposition coupled with his many sterling qualities won for him a host of friends who will in years to come live to appreciate his noble life and splendid character, which as an open book had a smile, a laugh and cheerful thought on every page. With his passing the book is closed, useful life is ended and the following tribute of one brother to another tells the story of the ideal life and character of our beloved friend and neighbor. He added the sum of human joy and were everyone to whom he did some loving sercie to bring a blossom to his grave, he would slee tonight beneath a wildereness of flowers." " His suffering ended with the day Yet he lived he at its close And breathed the long, long night away In statue like repose. But when the sun, in all his state Illumed the eastern skies He passed through glory's morning gates And walked in Paradise." _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
