This site had photos that need to find a home. Some have "markings" that give clues to who they are, others don't. You may find your ancestor here. The search is divided by state, surname, groups, children, wedding, etc. So you can narrow down your search if you need to. Happy hunting. You should look for records before 1850 in Athens County. A few records may have been transferred to Vinton County but normally they stayed with the parent county. ======================================== Charles R. Hi everyone, It has been too many years since I took my Ohio History classes in school (and college); I refuse to tell you how many. Here is my question: Was Elk Township part of Athens County prior to 1850? And where would I find the records for this township prior to 1850? Thank you in advance, Sheila Beyer Thomas ________________________________________________________________ CPAs . . . Making Sense of a Changing and Complex World.

I'm sorry if this is off topic, but I'd like to confirm a story that I heard as a boy. My step-father told me that the land for the courthouse was donated to Vinton county with the stipulation that nobody could be sentenced to death there. Has anyone else heard this story, or have a reference to confirm or refute this claim? If this is true, it could have some bearing on the current murder trial in McArthur. In case you haven't heard, Judge Simons decided to not pursue the death penalty for economic reasons. His decision is being appealed. I think it would be interesting to learn if there is a history lesson here. Sincerely Rick Holbert
Hello- Could someone tell me the address for writing the State of Ohio to obtain a Death Certificate. In Michigan, they're available after 1867, and are $15 each, i'm hoping Ohio has a similar situation. Thanks, Chris Andrews
Chris, You can read through this page at the Ohio Historical Society regarding how and where to obtain historical death certificates - http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/refemail.html . Deaths from November 1908 to present are indexed statewide. Deaths from 1867 to Oct 1908 are recorded in the county and usually they are indexed by volume. Some other indexes to Ohio deaths are online at subscription sites (like Ancestry.com). I do a good bit of Ohio research and so for convenience have listed some of these indexes here http://www.progenealogists.com/vitalrecordsohio.htm, just to give you an idea of what is out there. By far the least expensive thing to do to get a photocopy of an original death certificate is to write to an archive or government agency, but sometimes they take a long time :) Best wishes, Natalie Cottrill ProGenealogists, Inc. Webmaster Weese: My entry as of 05/02-2000 is on your website in Archive 7. I learned how to make a copy of it without copying all of the records for other queries. I have yet to have a response to my query, but am always optimistic. Keep up the good work. They have determined the mail from the www.rootsweb.com server that sends mail from forms on web pages is being blocked somewhere. It does not affect everyone who has a page with forms, just the people downstream from the internet provider that is blocking them. ======================================== Charles R. Mr. Weese, The problem may be at RootsWeb. All of a sudden last week all mail from their various lists, just stopped coming. I unsubscribed from all of the lists and am in the process of resubcribing to see if that corrects the problem. -----Original Message----- From: Charles R. It is not as easy for me to use, but at least I can get your information. I am convinced that my ISP is the problem but they swear they are not blocking any mail from Rootsweb. Of course they said that a few months ago when they blocked all of Rootsweb mail due to problems in my ISPs mail system. Over the last month some of your queries, surname submissions or address changes have been lost due to the problem. Take a look at the appropriate pages on the web site and see if any of your submissions are there. If not, you can resend them to me. Hello- I'm looking for the parents of Samuel Huston, info on his wife Mary Ann Gorby, and the parents of Amanda "Mandy" Rosela Lee. I've listed all of the names/dates I currently have below. I would be interested in comparing notes with anyone researching the Huston or Gorby surnames from these areas. Thanks, Chris Andrews Samuel Huston b. May 23, 1817 in Columbiana County, Ohio d. June 18, 1888 m. November 10, 1844 in Meigs County, Ohio +Mary Ann Gorby b. November 28, 1820 in Columbiana County, Ohio d. Aft. 1880 *living in Salem Township, Meigs County per the 1850 Census *living in Vinton Township, Vinton County per the 1870 Census *living in Vinton Township, Vinton County per the 1880 Census ......their 2 sons (I know of no other siblings at this time): John M. Abt. 1857 in Ohio d. abt 1891 in Ohio (Marcus & Amanda married on July 01, 1875 in Vinton Co., Ohio) The children of Marcus and Amanda: Samuel Huston b. Abt. 1876 in Ohio Annie C. Huston b. Abt. 1878 in Ohio (later died while giving birth) Ida Belle Huston b. June 15, 1880 in Vinton Co., OH John, who later lived in Grand Rapids, MI and died of Typhoid. Val Huston b. ? married a Mr. Chowning, and she had one daughter who married a Pomroy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OK, that's what I know about my Samuel Huston & family. Now here are some additional facts which i've found over the years: The wife of my Samuel Huston; Mary Ann Gorby, had an older brother named Jacob Gorby. Jacob married an Ann Huston (b. 1811) in Columbiana Co in 1830. The parents of Mary Ann Gorby and Jacob Gorby lived in St. Clair Twp & then Middleton Twp., Columbiana Co, OH so I suspect that the parents of my Samuel did also live in one of those two townships. I suspect that the Ann Huston above, was an older sister to my Samuel Huston. This suspicion is based not only on the fact that sibling marriages were fairly common back then, but also that my Samuel Huston and wife Mary Ann had moved to Meigs Co., OH and were living just down the road from Jacob Gorby and wife Ann [Huston] in the 1840 Meigs Co., OH Census.
