It wasn't that it wasn't allowed, you just had to have several hundred thousand dollars in escrow generating enough interest to cover the charges of maintainence of the plot. Townships are responsible for mowing all cemeteries, Vinton has trouble getting any money to do the extras needed. I found a cemetery restoration project underway in Pickaway county last month where they are resetting old toppled stones onto deep concrete bases. I'ts the first time I've seen this done. There was a cemetery in Hocking county where someone bulldozed the stones away and put up a trailer park. R. Morgan

    3. Thank you for sending me the information regarding Pleasant Valley Cemetery and my Abraham Bryson family. Where is Pleasant Valley Cemetery located? I do not know how to ask this question... so I will just ask... do people still bury their loved ones in this cemetery? Is it kept up? Does anyone know when the law was passed that loved ones could not be buried on their home property? Nancy F. McKee Bryson, wife of Abraham, is reported to have died in 1875. Note from Mrs. William Martha "Mattie" Day Bryson, circa 1935 (copied exactly as written): Winfield Scott Bryson (my note - youngest son of Nancy & Abraham) left Zalaska, Ohio March 30, 1883 stopped at Cherryvale, Kansas resided there 2 days, Left there for Ottawa, Kansas, Located buying house and resided there 12 years, leaving in the year 1895 Locating in Kansas City, Kansas. Where he resided until his death July 25, 1911. I had found no documents belonging to my family to tell me what happened to Winfield's family of origin. I do have letters regarding Amanda Brewer Bryson's family. Thank you again for finding this information for me. I am glad I know where they are buried. 3. Dear Vinton County Researchers, My g-g-great grandfather is reported to be buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Zaleski OH. Does any of this group have a listing for that cemetery? I would also like to know if his wife Nancy McKee Bryson, children Abraham, John, Harrison, and Louisa are buried there. Abraham Bryson had land (82 acres) in Vinton County. The 1880 US Census showed that he at the age of 80, his son Abraham, John, Harrison, and daughter Louisa were still with him on the farm. Senior Abraham died 20 May 1884. 1. Re: [OHVINTON-L] Crashed Computer
    2. I too just received a worm virus, my Norton antivirus killed it. The second of such attempts from users of genealogy sites this year. There are security flaws built into certain E-mail programs that cause these problems. Outlook express is known for that problem . Often your computer mails the virus without your knowledge using these flaws. That in combination with those who do not understand the problems caused by hackers often lead to crashed computers. McAfee anti virus is popular but that company has recently given back door access to the government who can access your files. If they can access it, so can any savvy hacker. Cable modem users are in the most danger, I had a program before I got the hub that registered 30-40 hack attempts over night. Hackers use automated programs to find receptive computers, your computer may be part of their secret network used for mischief. Whenever sending E-mail to several people, always hide the addresses in BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) so that spammers can't get more address to mail to. There are address stealing web-bots that hunt for E-Mail addresses on web sites, one attack was from the Vinton site posting. Also if you are going to forward e-mail, remove all of the extra addresses as well. Frequently newbies to E-mail will receive chain letters, jokes and hoaxes and start forwarding them to friends, don't do it..it's very annoying. A good anti virus program plus a nice inexpensive firewall is a good defense against attacks. I use a Linksys network hub to protect my computers from attack. Check these sites to see if you are protected: http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/ http://grc.com/su-firewalls.htm

    3. Robin, Sorry to hear about your computer woes. There is another choice... I've been very happy with Linux, an alternative to Windows. I've been known to go for weeks without rebooting my computer, and then I only reboot because I want to, not because something has crashed on me. Some Linux users have gone for over a year without rebooting. Also, because of it was designed with security in mind, it's virtually virus proof. Gramps is the program I'm currently using to manage my genealogy data. It does most of the normal stuff, like importing and exporting gedcom files, etc. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, Linux and Gramps are FREE SOFTWARE!!! 3. To the lists: I finally have my computer up and running. Luckely, I didn't loose my family files, I had them backed up. To those who expressed concern about an anit-virus package, I have Norton Anti Virus. The problen was not a virus. It was my new software program Windows XP Home. If you don't have XP don't get it until it has programs that are compatible. If you have it, don't download anything off the internet. It seems it doesn't like anyone elses software. I had the computer made for me in February 2002. When they asked what program I wanted I had the options of Windows 98, (Which I knew had glitches), NT, 2000, and XP Home or Professional. I opted for the newest and most up to date. In June I was going on vacation so I tried to install a COSMI maps program after getting in touch with COSMI to see if it could be installed and compatible with XP. They assured me it was compatible and sent me instructions on what to do. After installation it wouldn't work so I removed it or at least thought I did. August 19, (one day before my warrenty ran out) I crashed. My computer gurus, my daughter and son-in-law, took my computer and had to completely redo the XP installation wiping out any files and starting over. That's what I'm doing now. As it was explained to me in layman's terms, XP didn't like COSMI and spit it out causing everything to go with it. In any case I am back (for now). Robin [email protected] Robin Fife

    1. [OHVINTON-L] How to find a will?
    2. junomyth
    3. Hi, I would like to find a will, or what happened to the farm that Abraham Bryson had... Some history: Abraham Bryson is documented on several US Census as being born in Maryland, in 1800. He married Nancy McKee who was born in Pennsylvania. There is documentation that his first four children were born in Virginia. He is documented moving to Guernsey County, Ohio and then to Vinton County. Abraham Bryson had land (82 acres) in Vinton County. The 1880 US Census showed that he at the age of 80, his son Abraham, John, Harrison, and daughter Louisa were still with him on the farm. Senior Abraham died 20 May 1884. Please guide me to where I need to research for a will and the possible sale of this farm. Thanks Diana Bryson-Brooks

    3. Yep, Norton's is a great tool, indeed. But in Robin's situation, not downloading anything from anyone that she does not know might be difficult for her. I think she does look-ups and research for genealogy enthusiasts, and I am probably correct when I say folks send her files to assist in her research. I have folks writing to me all the time with files for review. That is why it is so important to have some sort of protection. A heads up also to Norton users. It is only as good as what definitions you have installed on your computer. Even though Norton's software is current at the time of manufacture, you need to subscribe to LiveUpdate and periodically download new definitions to be protected from new viruses that are started every day. 1. Re: [OHVINTON-L] Robert/ Thomas Chilcote in Ohio
    2. Hello Gary, Thank you so much for responding to my query. Is the Mary you are talking of the daughter of Lord John Chilcoat b., from the Bridgewater, Somersetshire, England area? My line runs back through them through, John II, John R., Robinson L., Joshua, John, Joshua Hiram, and Dollie Dean Chilcote Shaw. I have just started trying to find all of the Chilcote's. I did find several on line from other researchers who have went clear back to Henry b.abt 1525. But have little on the immediate Chilcote line. I found a few buried in Vinton and Hocking Counties of Ohio and in census records that I was trying to see if they were related to my line. I did not know who Mary's husband was so thank you for the Radcliffe connection. Are you related to the Radcliff's of Vinton and Hocking Counties of Ohio? There are several Ratcliff's buried in Union Cemetery in Vinton Co., that I found and also in Bell Cemetery in Vinton County. Any information on the Chilcote lines I mentioned would be greatly appreciated.
