    1. [OHVINTON-L] Re: OHVINTON-D Digest V02 #191
    2. I am curious to know if the community of Clarion was located outside Wilkesville. My grandfather and grandmother Daniel Jack Sorrell and Elsie Edith (Cardwell) Sorrell were residents of Vinton Co. and lived on Clarion Rd. as it is now called. The road starts at St.Rt. 124 and ends on County Rd. 9 (Buttermilk Rd.) Was this the Clarion that is mentioned occasionally in the old articles? Willa D. Glass

    3. When I was married in 1956 the neighbors gathered and there was a belling. The groom was expected to supply the bellers with candy bars and cigars. It was a fun thing. I also remember at my sisters bridal shower some naughty person wrapped a small baby potty and it had a junk of limburger cheese in it, what a smell. Of course everyone got a big laugh out of it. Here're a couple of links which describe the belling or (shivaree): http://www.calliopepress.com/maude/excerpt.html http://www.countryrag.org/cr71219.html I can confirm that bellings were still practiced in Vinton County in the 1960s... I can remember participating in the belling that followed Dale Thomson's wedding as a small boy in the early 1960s.
